Hello! You have found the latest (public) version 3.3.1 of XFree86/OS2.
**************************************************************************
This version is a FULL RELEASE of XFree86/OS2. In contrast to BETA
version, this version has NO TIMEOUT, so you may safely use it in
production environments. Full source code is available
from ftp://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/3.3.1
XFree86-3.3.1 is mainly a bug fix release for 3.3, which fixes about 140
bugs and problems that have been found with 3.3. XFree86/OS2-3.3 is now
withdrawn. For a list of new features, consult the RELNOTES file.
**************************************************************************
This file is a condensed version of the file README.OS2 to be found
somewhere else.
The purpose of this file is to give you a SHOPPING LIST of things you
should obtain. The whole distribution in this directory is about 50 MB
archived, but you by far won't need everything. The following list describes
what the files contain and what you must have (marked REQUIRED) and what you
might get as well (marked OPTIONAL). Save net bandwidth and your money and do
not overload the FTP servers with things you hardly ever need - don't do an
uncritical MGET.
Roadmap to further help
-----------------------
All the files below are in the archive X331base.zip which you should
unpack in the toplevel directory of a reasonably large disk drive.
- Read the /XFree86/LATEST.OS2 file for the really latest additions and
corrections. While the other docs might be a few days old; this file
is really the last file packed into the distribution.
- Read the /XFree86/README.UPDATE file which tells you important things
if you want to upgrade from an earlier version.
- Read the /XFree86/README.OS2 file for an installation guide.
- Read the /XFree86/README file for a list of changes and
improvements in this version and a list of supported hardware.
- Read the /XFree86/SuperProbe.doc file for the manual page of
Superprobe (formatted).
- Read the /XFree86/X11OS2FAQ.HTML file which contains the list of
"Frequently Asked Questions" (FAQ). Note this is the resource to
consult first after README.OS2 for any troubleshooting.
- You might be interested in the RELNOTES file, which is the more generalized
text of README.OS2, however, the installation procedure and some filename
or program names may not apply to XFree86/OS2.
- You might be interested in the X11R6.3.RELNOTES file, which describes the
recent changes and additions of X11R6.3 which was already the base
version of X11 in XFree86-3.2A.
Note for users of a previous version:
-------------------------------------
XFree86-3.3.1 is in some aspects, similarly to XFree86-3.2A and 3.3,
incompatible to the last public version 3.2, which is basically caused
by X11R6.3.
If you had 3.3 before, and are not interested in the recent library or
application fixes, you may just get a new X server for your card.
I don't recommend that you copy 3.3.1 files over a 3.2 installation. Please
save your relevant files from the old tree, remove it, and install 3.3.1
from scratch, otherwise you are going to enter a swampy area, and I won't
give any guarantees. If you have XFree86-3.2A, the incompatible changes
have already been done, so it is possible to unpack 3.3.1 over a 3.2A
installation (be careful that this might still overwrite certain config
files). In this case, though, please remove the XConfig file and
re-run the xf86config program for your hardware. Some items may have been
changed.
How to install:
---------------
Before ANYTHING ELSE, get the following files:
X331base.zip (REQUIRED)
EMXRT.ZIP (REQUIRED, this contains emx09c patch level 1 or later,
not needed if you already have it installed)
The X331base file contains a test program for your video card. If this
fails or reports a non-supported video card *which is VGA compatible*, it is
usually only possible to run the VGA16 X server with a lousy 640x480x16
resolution, which might not be what you really want. In some cases, the
SuperProbe program might erroneously detect a wrong video card. *In this
case*, please read the accompanying file \XFree86\lib\X11\doc\README if
your hardware is supported despite of the possible misdetection. If this
file does not mention it (or specifically says it is unsupported), game is
over for you.
If the test was okay *or you really know what you are doing* (most people
don't), select among the following archives:
X331DOC.ZIP (REQUIRED)
READMEs and XFree86 specific man pages.
X331BIN.ZIP (REQUIRED)
all of the executable X client applications and shared libs
X331FNTS.ZIP (REQUIRED)
the misc and 75dpi fonts
You must choose at least ONE of the following to match your hardware:
Note every server comes in two flavors: the full-featured server containing
PEX, XI, XIE support, and a smaller server without these special support.
You probably want to have a small server.
The full-featured servers are called 'X331*.ZIP', the small servers are
'S331*.ZIP'.
X3318514.ZIP, S3318514.ZIP (*)
the X server for IBM 8514/A and compatible boards
