  15. The newest version of Phoenix-CD proves that it is still a heavyweight
  16. contender in the world of Shareware CD-ROMS.  Loaded with nearly 700MB
  17. of shareware, Phoenix combines a powerful and easy to navigate user
  18. interface with one of the best shareware collections available.

  51. All programs are thoroughly virus scanned for safety.  New to this
  52. version are 12 GIF file areas with over 900 images and a built-in viewer
  53. which works with VGA or better displays. To view images larger than 640
  54. X 480, an SVGA display is needed since panning is not available in the
  55. interface.  Up to 10 GIFs can be selected for viewing in slideshow
  56. format.

  73. Using the disc is very easy.  All you have to do is load it into your
  74. drive and type RUN.  As it runs directly from the CD-ROM, no files have
  75. to be written to your hard disk.  Context-sensitive help menus are
  76. available for every function.  Automatic copy and unzip functions are
  77. included which makes it easy to review software.  All files and
  78. subdirectories can also be erased automatically after evaluating
  79. programs.  No topic file on this disk is dated earlier than 1/1/90.
  80. Speech synthesis and voice recognition software is also on the disc and
  81. installable.

  83. I only have a few qualms about this product.  First of all, I wish there
  84. was a Windows interface in addition to the DOS one.  Since I spend much
  85. of my time in Windows, using DOS applications to access CD-ROMs slows
  86. things down.  Secondly, some of the files have been placed in the wrong
  87. areas.  As in Version 2, for example, Clipper files appear in the
  88. Desktop Publishing area instead of in the database area.  I also wish
  89. that the file structure of the disc was less cryptic for those who don't
  90. opt to use the included navagation software. It is virtually impossible
  91. to know what is subdirectory 28A without checking it.  Panning in the
  92. GIF viewer would also be an asset for those with non-SVGA graphics
  93. cards.

  95. These concerns aside, Phoenix-CD 3.0 is one of the best values around in
  96. Shareware CD-ROM software.
