  5. Introduction
  6. ------------
  7. This is the first release of NordTracker and may contain a lot of bugs. Anyway,
  8. if you have any comments, ideas on how to improve the tracker or bugreports,
  9. then send them to:

  14. Quick start
  15. -----------
  16. For quickly hearing some music, just type: DEMO256. If have 512 or more DRAM on
  17. Ultrasnd, then you can type: DEMO512. Demo512 is 3 additional NTC music files,
  18. which requires 512K of DRAM on the GUS.
  19. To start the tracker itself, type: TRACKER. To load an NTS music file, go into
  20. the file menu and select Load NTSong (or press F3). Press OK and tracker starts
  21. to load the song. When it's done, press any key to get back to the Song Editor.
  22. Go into the play menu and select Play Song (or press F11). The tracker should
  23. start to playing the song.
  24. From the Window menu, choose the Fancy Window. Nice Volume'O'Meters, eh!?

  26. How to use NordTracker
  27. ----------------------
  28. This topic demonstrates how do create a simple song without effects.
  29. From the Window menu, choose the Instrument Library. Double click on the GUS
  30. library instruments and dblclick on the Accustic Piano. A beep from the
  31. PC-beeper should apear. It indicates that is sample has been loaded.
  32. Now press F6 to enter the Instrument Editor. Place a couple of notes. Try
  33. pressing on one of the Sustain arrows. The gridnet should change, and smaller
  34. notes can be layed (or bigger!). Try, while placing a note, to drag the note to
  35. the right. The note should extend.
  36. To play the pattern, press F4 or choose Play Special from the Edit menu. The
  37. repeat playing the pattern until you press F12 (Stop song in Play menu).
  38. Now give the pattern a name by selecting Change Name in the Edit menu.
  39. Press F5 (Song Editor in Window Menu). Your patterns name should be listed in
  40. the left red box. Press the left mouse button on Pattern 0 (The big box in the
  41. pattern box). Your pattern name should apear.
  42. Now go into the instrument pattern, select the first empty pattern avaible.
  43. Fill this one with some notes and give it a name.
  44. Go back to Song Editor and select your new pattern in the left red box. Set the
  45. pattern in Pattern 1 (as you did with pattern 0). Press F12 (Play song in the
  46. Play menu). The first pattern should be played and the second afterwards. To
  47. stop the song, press F12 (Stop song in Play menu).
  48. Enter the Drum Library (from the Window menu) and select the Ultrasound drums.
  49. Dblclick on a couple of drums (Accustic Bass Drum, Accustic Snare drum and the
  50. closed hihat).
  51. Press F7 (Drum Editor in Window Menu). The Drum Editor works almost as the
  52. Instrument Editor. Make a little beat, and give it a name.
  53. Press F5 (Song Editor in Window Menu). Press the left mouse button on Pattern 0
  54. (The little box in the pattern box). Your Drum Pattern name should apear. Press
  55. F11 to start the song again. The drums will play in both patterns (0 & 1). The
  56. drum pattern will repeat itself until a new one is placed. To totaly stop the
  57. drums, place a empty drum pattern.
  58. The song can be saved by choosing Save as in the File menu.

  60. Trouble shooting
  61. ----------------
  62. The ULTRASND and ULTRADIR environment variables must be set. The syntax of the
  63. ULTRASND variable is as follows: ULTRASND baseport,dmaplay,dmarec,gf1irq,midiirq
  64. To set the ULTRASND variable, type: set ULTRASND=220,1,1,11,7
  65. The ULTRADIR syntax: ULTRADIR=c:\ultradir
  66. To set the ULTRADIR variable, type: set ULTRASND=c:\ultrasnd

  68. When you starts the tracker, you should be able to see a yellow logo at the top
  69. of the screen. However, you have an incompatible VGA-card, it might look like
  70. a bounch of strange characters. To avoid this problem, use the commandline
  71. parameter: /cpfix
  72.  
  73. If the tracker looks very strange, try use one of the following parameters:
  74.   /fixmode
  75.   /fixmode2
  76.   /grafmode
  77. The first fixmode changes to normal 80x50 textmode, the logo will not look too
  78. good, but the program can be used.
  79. The second fixmode (/fixmode2) changes to 90x50 textmode. All should work fine,
  80. but this mode may cause problems with the mousedriver.
  81. Grafmode changes to 640x480 grafixmode and simulates textmode! This parameter
  82. never fails.
