  3. A help file to get you started with EMULA
  4.  
  5. Unfortunately, no one has translated the documentation for EMULA,
  6. so here's a short description of how to install and use EMULA. 
  7. This info was obtained by my experimentation with EMULA, and my
  8. very limited (i.e., bad) knowledge of German, so this is NOT a
  9. complete and accurate description.  It should be enough to get you
  10. started, however.
  11.  
  12. Basically, EMULA5_1.PRG should be placed into the AUTO folder of a
  13. boot disk.  EMULA5_1.PRG must be the first program to run when the
  14. system is booted, so make sure it is the first program in the AUTO
  15. folder!  To ensure that it is the first program, create a new AUTO
  16. folder, copy EMULA5_1.PRG into it FIRST, then copy any other AUTO-
  17. programs you want into the folder.
  18.  
  19. WARNING:  DO NOT INSTALL EMULA ON YOUR AUTO-BOOT HARD DISK!  EMULA
  20. does some nifty tricks with GEM, so it may not like other AUTO
  21. programs, or even desk accessories.  Don't risk being locked out
  22. of your hard drive.  Experiment with your AUTO-programs and
  23. accessories on a floppy drive BEFORE you try installing EMULA on a
  24. hard drive!
  25.  
  26. When you boot your ST with EMULA in the AUTO folder, a menu will
  27. appear.  At this point, you can choose F for color or M for
  28. monochrome.  If you have a color system, and you choose F, EMULA
  29. simply boots you into color mode.  But, if you choose M, EMULA
  30. displays a fuzzy-looking but usable monochrome desktop!  Because
  31. of the programming overhead, the monitor refresh rate is slower,
  32. so your desktop is jerky and slow.
  33.  
  34. If you have a monochrome system and you choose M, you will see
  35. your normal desktop.  If you choose F, you will see an EMULA
  36. imitation of the low-res desktop.  It will cover only the left
  37. half of the screen, since there's only 320 X-pixels in low-res
  38. (there is a way to force low-res to appear on the whole screen,
  39. more about that later.)  As mentioned above, the emulated screen
  40. is slow.
  41.  
  42. If you copy EMULA_U5.ACC to your boot disk, you will have access
  43. to an accessory called EMULA Anpassung.  This ACC lets you modify
  44. the way that the emulated screen is displayed.  For instance, if
  45. you choose 1 from the first dialog while in emulated low-res, the
  46. desktop stretches out to fill the whole screen.  Similarly, if you
  47. choose 1 while in monochrome emulation, your fuzzy desktop becomes
  48. a clear, scrolling screen.  You'll have to experiment with the
  49. rest of the items.  (One of the items is obviously a mouse
  50. accelerator, but I'm not sure what the others are.)

  52. If START comes across an English translation of the documentation,
  53. we will certainly place it onto the START disk.  If you take it
  54. upon yourself to tackle the translation, please send it to START,
  55. so we can put it on the disk.
