The Gospel of John Lesson 12
Chapter 11. Lazarus' Resurrection.
This discourse and miracle proves That Jesus is the Son of God, one
with the Father, as He stated in John 10:29-30, 36.
Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. A great, outstanding miracle!
1. The Circumstances of the Miracle. v. 1-37.
Lazarus of Bethany, the brother of Mary and Martha, was very
sick. (Note Luke 10:38-42). His sisters sent word to Jesus.
a. Jesus absent. v. 1-16.
Jesus declared again that He is the Son of God and that
this occasion shall manifest His glory and glorify God.
v. 4
He tarried two days and then went to Judea.
Jesus knew that Lazarus had died and that he must raise
him from the dead. v. 11.
The disciples did not understand (v. 12-13). Then Jesus
stated plainly that Lazarus was dead. (v. 14-15).
Thomas was willing to die with Jesus. v. 16. The
thought of death, not of resurrection, filled his mind.
b. Jesus present. v. 17-37.
When Jesus arrived Martha went out to meet Him. Mary sat
in the house.
The discourse or conversation of Martha with Jesus. v.
21-27. Jesus' great declaration, "I am the Resurrection
and the Life." v. 25 Martha's great confession, "Thou
art the Christ, the Son of God." v. 27. Mary came to Jesus
and fell at His feet. v. 28-32.
Note that her words were the same as Martha's in v. 21.
"Jesus wept." v.35. Cf. Luke 19:41 This shows the
tenderness and compassion of the heart of Christ.
Note how Jesus groaned. v. 33 and 38, Cf. Rom. 8:26.
2. The Miracle--Lazarus raised from the dead! v. 38-44.
The command to take away the stone. v. 38-38. Human hands
could roll away the stone, the Divine Voice alone could raise
the dead - but the Master wanted the human to cooperate with the
Divine. And so it is today.
The Power of Faith. v. 40.
Jesus' prayer of thanksgiving at the grave. v. 41-42.
Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus come forth! v.43.
By the power of God Lazarus came forth, raised from the
dead. Jesus commanded them to loose him and let him go. Again
the Divine desire for the human to co-operate in this mighty
miracle. v.44. Cf. Jn.5:24-25
3, The Results of the Miracle. v. 45-57.
a. Many Jews believed on Jesus. v. 45.
b. The Pharisees acknowledged the miracle but increased
their hatred of Christ. Notice the power of jealousy.
v. 47-48.
c. Caiaphas prophesied that Jesus should die for the
nation.v. 49-52
d. They plot to kill Jesus, the Resurrection and the
Life. v.53,57.
e. Jesus withdrew to a country near the wilderness. v.54.
