1. The Preincarnate Word. John 1:1-13
The Gospel of John
The Gospel of John begins with Jesus in the past eternity, differing from
Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Christ is presented as the Word of God. A word conveys thought. Christ as
the Word conveys the thought or mind or God to man. Col. 2:3, Rev. l:8,11,
Rev. 22:13.
v. 1 (a) The Eternal Word. The Word who Was in the beginning.
(b) The Personality of the Word. His association with the Father and
with the Spirit.
(c) The Deity of the Word. His oneness with the Father and the Spirit.
v. 2 A repetition of truths in verse 1.
v. 3 The Word, the Creator. Gen. 1:1. The Creative Word, one of the
"Elohim". Col. 1:15-19, Heb. 1:1-3, 10-12;11:3, Ps.33:6.
v. 4a The Word, the Life. Life in the Word. Note John 14:6
v. 4b-9 The word , the Light. Note John 8:12
Note the similarity of John 1 to Genesis 1: "Beginning", "God", "Create",
"Light", "Darkness", "God said"-"Word", "All things"; Gen. 1:1-31.
"The Word" in the Old Testament. Ezek. 1:3, Jer. 1:2. Hos. 1:1 Joel. 1:1,
Jonah 1:1, 3:1, Micah 1:1. Zeph. 1:1, Haggai 1:1,3; 2:1,10, Zech. 1:1,
Mal. 1:1, Ps. 107:20. He sent His Word and healed them.
v. 10-13. Receiving the Word.
2. The Incarnation of the word. John 1.14. Note Matt. 1:18-25, 1 Tim. 3:16
The only begotten of the Father--the Word is the Son of God.
3. John the Baptist's Testimony of the Word. John 1:15-34.
a. Jesus greater than John. v. 15 (The Pre-existent One)
b. Jesus (grace and truth) greater than Moses (law). v. 16-17
c. Jesus the only begotten Son who is in the bosom of the Father. v.18.
d. John, the Forerunner and herald of Jesus. v. 19-28.

What the Rock was to Jacob, Jesus is to Nathanael.
Christ is the way--the ladder led to heaven.
