TO THE GLORY OF GOD

Study No 10
DANCING IN THE NEW MOVE OF GOD
2 Samuel 6:14-16
"And David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, and
David was wearing a linen ephod. So David and all the house of
Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouting and the
sound of the trumpet. Then it happened as the ark of the Lord
came into the city of David that Michal, the daughter of Saul,
looked of the window and swa King David leaping and dancing
before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart."
David, a man after God's own heart, laid aside all his kingly
robes, and clothed in a linen ephod, which was worn by every priest in
that day, he danced before the Lord at the return of the ark. God is
returning His glory to the church today and men have laid aside every
vestige of earthly dignity and prestige, and in complete abandonment
and joy are dancing before the presence of His glory. Michal, the
daughter of Saul (flesh) and wife of David, despised David for this
open display of worship and her attitude produced barrenness (2 Sam.
6:23). This should be a solemn warning to God's people today -
despising the anointing brings barrenness.
The dance has been taken be Satan and corrupted. He has used the
power of this expression to speak a body language that is earthly,
sensual and devilish.
All nations on earth have some form of dancing. Heathen dancing
causes the body to make various gyrations. These gyrations stimulate
sensual drives. The tribal dances are accompanied with jungle music
and associated with the worship of false gods. Together the music and
dancing opens the way for the evil spirit to enter and take control.
These dances generally end up with the most vile orgies. These
heathen voodoo rites, these vulgar, sensuous body movements, find
their modern counterpart in "Rock Festivals" of recent years.
It is because music and dancing have become associated with
sensuality and immorality that the Church, as a whole, shrinks from
the very mention of the word. Especially if this is associated with
worship unto the Lord.
TRUE joy and rejoicing belongs to the redeemed people of the Lord.
When these things can be done to the glory and praise of God, they are
expressions of worship. If the motivations is self display, or
associated with sensuous movements of the body, then it is carnal and
glorifies Satan.
"Dancing in the Spirit" is not used in Scripture but "DANCING
BEFORE THE LORD" is a Scriptual expression.
God Commands Us To Dance
"But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create; For behold, I
create Jerusalem for rejoicing, And her people for gladness.
(19) I will also rejoice in Jerusalem, and be glad in My people;
And there will no longer be heard in her the voice of weeping and
the sound of crying."
Here, when the word rejoice is used, the Hebrew means to violently
dance. So we see that the Lord commands us to dance and also wants to
dance through us.
Zephaniah 3:17 - "...He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy."
This word also is to violently dance.
Four Important Types Of Dancing
1. Prophetic Dancing
1 Samuel 18:6-7; 21:11; 29:5
The women of Israel sang and danced with tabrets of joy and
instruments of music after David had killed the giant Philistine,
Goliath of Gath. The Lord had given David a great victory.
The women answered one another in refrain. This wasn't done
yet, David had only killed a giant, not ten thousand, they were
speaking of something to come.
The prophetic dance gives a picture to what God is saying to
His people. The dancer doing this must have a prophetic mantle.
This entails having established and moved consistently in the gift
of prophecy.
2. Possessing Dancing
Joshua 10:24-25
"And it came about when they brought these kings out to
Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Israel, and
said to the chiefs of the men of war wh had gone with him,
'Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings.' So
they came near and put their feet on their necks.
(25) Joshua then said to them, 'Do not fear or be dismayed!
Be strong and courageous, for thus the Lord will do to all
your enemies with whom you fight.'"
This is an ancient Oriental way of treating captured kings. It
wasn't an act of cruelty, but rather it represented complete
subjugation. It was intended to denote superiority and triumph.
Joshua 14:9
Just as the priests here claimed the land for their children,
so can the dancer claim that for the people. Bondages are broken
and healings can take place. Dancers are not only called to be
liberated but to liberate.
3. Praise Dancing
A dancer acts as a priest before the Lord, ministering to and
blessing the Lord and in turn blessing the people.
2 Chronicles 20:21
"And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed
those who sang to the Lord and those who praised Him in holy
attire..."
King James Oxford Bible says, "praisers that should praise."
This word praise in the Hebrew is HALAL - to make a show, to
boast, to be clamorously foolish, to rave, to celebrate, and
commend.
"The beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army,
and to say praise"
This word praise is YADAH. It means to hold out the hand,
revere or worship with extended hands, bemoan by wringing the
hands, graceful hand gestures, to profess, confess, to show or
point out, to give thanks, to praise, celebrate.
"THE LORD FOR HIS MERCY ENDURETH FOREVER."
Dancers can be used to lead the people in worship through
hand motions.
"And he appointed certain of the Levites to minister before
the ark of the Lord, and to record, and to thank and praise
the Lord, God of Israel."
Both these words thank and praise are the Hebrew word YADAH.
4. To Bring The Presence Of God
2 Samuel 6:14-15
"And David danced before the Lord with all his might and
David was girded with a linen ephod. So David and all the
house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with
shouting, and the sound of the trumpet."
We know that the ark speaks of the Presence of the Lord, and
David was bringing it in with dancing.
Words Translated "Dancing" In The Bible
A. OLD TESTAMENT
1. CHUL-CHIL, Hebrew
To twist or whirl in circular or spiral manner, to dance, to turn
around in a circle. Also to writhe in pain, travail, to bring
forth children.
Isaiah 66:7,8
2. MACHOL, Hebrew
A round dance. This is the noun form of CHUL - to twist or form,
whirl in a circle.
Exodus 15:20-21
What is happening here is that a group of dancers has gone out
with timbrels. In the midst of this Miriam answers them. Answers
here means to eye or to heed, to pay attention to, respond,
specifically to sing, shout, testify and announce.
Miriam and the women of Israel danced and sang before the Lord
with timbrels after the victory of the Red Sea. It was unto the
Lord, not to man or mere display. This is the first recorded
dancing in the Bible. After being in bondage for several hundred
years, God delivered them. They danced out of great joy before
the Lord for such deliverance. The believer has been delivered
from bondage also by the blood of the true Passover Lamb, Jesus
Christ. Therefore we can dance before the Lord.
3. KARAR, Hebrew
To dance, whirl, to go or move in a circle, to exult, leap, to
run. Note: Dromedaries or camels is derived from this root due to
their bounding up and down motion.

4. DALAG, Hebrew
A prim. root; to spring - leap.
2 Samuel 22:30
5. GUL-GIL, Hebrew
To spin around (influenced by violent emotion), rejoicing, glad,
joyful, rejoice.
Psalm 51:8

6. RAQAD, Hebrew
To stamp ie. to spring about wildly or for joy, dance, jump, leap,
skip, to skip for fear (figuratively).

7. CHAGAG, Hebrew
To move in a circle, to observe festival, implying to be giddy,
celebrate, dance, reel to and fro, leaping and dancing in sacred
dances.
Throughout the Bible God not only commands us to dance, but
also shows us the way to go about it. One of these is festival
dancing, where a group of God's people gather together to join in
group dancing. There is a real unity in this.
Leviticus 23:41
"You shall thus celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for
seven days in the year. It shall be a perpetual statute
throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the
seventh month."
The word "celebrate" here is CHAGAG, in the Hebrew it means: to
move in a circle, sacred procession, to observe a festival, be
giddy, celebrate, dance, reel to and fro.
Exodus 12:14, 17
"Now this day will be a memorial to you, and you shall
celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your
generations you are to celebrate it as a permanent
ordinance."
The word used here is also CHAGAG. This type of dancing can be
done in the sanctuary during a service at a special time or it
could be done outside at a different set place.

8. HALIYKAH, Hebrew
A walking; by implication a procession or march, a caravan: -
company, going, walk, way.
Psalm 68:24, 25
9. SHUWR, Hebrew
To sing, strolling ministrely, to turn, to travel about. This is
singing while moving in these scriptures.

10. YADAH, Hebrew
To use the hand (hold out) to revere or worship with extended
hands, wringing the hands, confess, graceful gestures. To throw,
to cast, to profess, to confess, to show or point out (with hand
extended) to give thanks, to praise, celebrate.
HANDS: Instruments Of War!
Throughout the Word of God there is great emphasis on the
hands. Time and time again we see the Lord stretching forth His
hand to help His people. In other instances we see Him
instructing His prophets to use their hands to bring deliverance.
Moses was commanded to stretch forth his hand over the Red Sea,
and it was parted.
In Exodus 17:11-12 the battle against Amalek was won for the
Israelites because of Moses' uplifted hands unto the Lord. The
singers, dancers and players on instruments go before the arme of
God. Just as Moses led the way by the extending of his hand, so
also the singers will lead the way for the people by extending
their hands unto the Lord in expressive worship.
Romans 6:13
"Neither yield ye your member as instruments of
unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as
those that are alive from the dead, and your members as
instruments of righteousness unto God."
The word instruments here means arms or weapons. When we lift
our hands unto the Lord, we need to realize that they are weapons
that will bring deliverance to God's people and drive back the
enemy.
Psalm 144:1
"BLESSED BE THE LORD, MY STRENGTH, WHICH TEACHETH MY HANDS
TO WAR, AND MY FINGERS TO FIGHT."
"BLESSED BE THE LORD, MY ROCK, WHO TRAINS MY HANDS FOR WAR,
AND MY FINGERS FOR BATTLE:" (NASB)
1 Chronicles 16:4.
Part of the ministry of the Levites, appointed by David, was
to praise the Lord, (Praise - Hebrew YADAH). They were to use
their hands in forms of worship! It was also involving spiritual
warfare before the Lord's presence.
Ezra 3:10, 11.
Ezra followed David's example.
Psalm 50:23.
B. NEW TESTAMENT
