  4. F.   MINISTRIES IN THE LOCAL CHURCH.
  5.  
  6.      While the five ministries are chosen by God to the whole Body
  7.      of Christ, God has planned that there be other ministries
  8.      involved solely in the local church.  Elders are to have
  9.      leadership responsibility of the local church, and deacons,
  10.      under the authority of the elders, are to be responsible for
  11.      the everyday material business of the life of the local
  12.      church.  There are other vitally important ministries which
  13.      operate in the local Church to bring it to perfection.  These
  14.      are mentioned specifically in Romans 12 and 1 Corinthians 12.

  16. ELDERS

  18.      The local church is self-governing and this government rests
  19.      in the hands of the elders.  Each local church described in
  20.      the New Testament has a number of elders, not just one.  When
  21.      one of the five ministries lives in a city and attends the
  22.      local church there, as he is recognised he becomes a co-elder
  23.      in that local church: he has equal authority in spiritual
  24.      matters with the elders who are already there.  The calling of
  25.      and elder is very important, so there are high standards of
  26.      qualifications.  In the early Church elders were appointed by
  27.      the apostles and not elected by popular vote.  His ministry
  28.      was for life.  An elder was established in the church after
  29.      prayer and fasting and the laying on of hands.  The terms
  30.      "bishops" and "overseer" in the New Testament also refer to
  31.      the ministry of an elder.

  33.      His Qualifications:  1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9.

  35.      1.   Twelve moral qualifications:
  36.           - blameless - no just cause for him to be blamed; 
  37.           - self-controlled; 
  38.           - sensible; 
  39.           - of good behaviour; 
  40.           - gentle; 
  41.           - fair-minded; 
  42.           - not overfond of wine; 
  43.           - not violent; 
  44.           - not greedy for money; 
  45.           - not quarrelsome; 
  46.           - not self-willed; 
  47.           - not quick tempered.

  49.      2.   Four qualifications in the home.
  50.           - husband of one wife; 
  51.           - hospitable - willing to receive strangers into his
  52.           home; 
  53.           - rules his own house well - bringing up obedient
  54.           children in right family relationship; 
  55.           - keeps good company.
  56.  
  57.      3.   Six spiritual qualification.
  58.           - not a young convert - mature; 
  59.           - holy; 
  60.           - takes a firm stand on the doctrine he has been taught;
  61.           - well able to teach others; 
  62.           - able to encourage the believers and convince those
  63.           opposing sound doctrine; 
  64.           - of good reputation in the outside world.

  66.      His Ministry:
  67.  
  68.      The elders ministry is similar to that of the pastor,
  69.      mentioned above.  He is like a shepherd caring for the sheep
  70.      entrusted to him by God.

  72.      1.   Has the compassion of a shepherd's heart.  Matt.9:36;
  73.           John 10:11.
  74.  
  75.      2.   Feeds the sheep.  Act.20:28; 1 Peter 5:2; Isaiah 40:11.

  77.      3.   Rules the local church with love. 1 Tim. 5:17; 1 Thess
  78.           5:12,13; Romans 12:8.
  79.  
  80.      4.   Is an example - a pattern for Christian living. 1 Peter
  81.           5:3; Hebrews 13:7.

  83.      5.   Leads his people.  John 10:4; Psalms 23:2,3.

  85.      6.   Cares for the church in a personal way. 1 Tim 3:5;
  86.           Hebrews 13:17; John 10:3,4.
  87.  
  88.      7.   Corrects wrong-doing. 1 Thess. 5:12; Acts 20:31;
  89.           Colossians 1:28.

  91.      8.   Prays for the sick.  Jams 5:14,15.

  93. DEACONS.

  95.      Like elders, the qualifications for this ministry are  very 
  96.      high and they first have to be proved in their ministry.  The
  97.      deacons task is the oversight of the material things of church
  98.      life.  His function is to serve willingly, releasing others to
  99.      minister.  He is elected to office by the people with the
  100.      confirmation and laying on of hands of the ministry.

  102.      His Qualifications 1 Timothy 3:8-,13; Acts 6:1-7. 
  103.           - of good reputation; 
  104.           - full of the Holy Spirit; 
  105.           - full of wisdom - sound judgment; 
  106.           - acceptable to the people; 
  107.           - serious; 
  108.           - not double-tongued; 
  109.           - not over-fond of wine; 
  110.           - not greedy for money; 
  111.           - blameless; 
  112.           - husband of one wife; 
  113.           - his wife to be serious and faithful in all things;
  114.           - ruling his family well.
  115.  
  116.      We read of the first deacons being appointed in Acts 6:1-6. 
  117.      Certain of these men were later numbered amongst the five
  118.      ministries, having prove themselves well in serving the
  119.      Church.

  121.      His Ministry
  122.  
  123.      He handles finances, daily details of Church life, giving to
  124.      the poor and widows.  Deacons are not just business men, but
  125.      men full of the Holy Ghost, and wisdom.  Acts 6:3; God likens
  126.      the rulers and leaders of the world to deacons or ministers in
  127.      Roman 13:1-6.

  129. MINISTRY OF HELPS.
  130.  
  131.      This ministry involves any helping service for the Lord's
  132.      work, spiritual or practical.  Unnecessary burdens can be
  133.      lifted from those in leadership with great responsibility.  It
  134.      is a definite ministry that God "set in the Church" (1
  135.      Corinthians 12:28), not a ministry of ruling, but one of
  136.      seeing and meting needs in order to support those who so rule. 
  137.      God is looking for faithfulness in small things first, then He
  138.      will give us greater responsibilities; we should not be
  139.      ashamed if we only have one talent.  Zechariah 4:10; Matt
  140.      10:42; Luke 16:10.

  142. MINISTRY OF EXHORTATION.
  143.  
  144.      All Christians are called to "exhort one another daily"
  145.      (Hebrews 10:25), especially in the days just before Christ's
  146.      return.  But to some there is given a special ministry of
  147.      exhortation. (Romans 12:8).  Through the enabling of the Holy
  148.      Spirit they comfort, encourage, impart faith and bring"a word
  149.      in season" (Isaiah 50:4) to believers in the church who need
  150.      it.  At different times each one of us needs encouragement, so
  151.      this is a ministry with many opportunities for expression;
  152.      both privately and in public.  It needs a sensitivity to the
  153.      leading of the Holy Spirit to know who to encourage and how to
  154.      do so without bringing condemnation (2 Timothy 4:2).  Note
  155.      Paul's balanced instruction to Titus: that with confidence and
  156.      authority he should bring teaching, exhortation and rebuke to
  157.      those God has placed under his covering.

  159. MINISTRY OF GIVING.
  160.  
  161.      "He that giveth let him do it with simplicity" Romans 12:8: 2
  162.      Corinthians 9:7.  This is a special ministry of liberal giving
  163.      to the Lord's work.  It is dependent not on wealth, but on
  164.      faithfulness to the Lord and a continuing trust that God can
  165.      make us a channel of finance to His work under His direction.
  166.      Often the gift of faith operates to believe for large amounts
  167.      of money to be supernaturally supplied.  God is always the
  168.      source of our supply and faith is the key that release it.  
  169.  
  170.      In this ministry giving goes above and beyond the
  171.      responsibility of all believers who are required to tithe and
  172.      give offerings.  Leviticus 27:30; Matt 23;23.  God's blessing
  173.      is promised.  Luke 6:38; read Acts 20:35; Proverbs 11:24,25. 
  174.      The Church of Macedonia were outstanding in their giving; for
  175.      even in the face of trails they gave with great joy beyond
  176.      what they could really afford. 2 Corinthians 8:1-5.

  178. MINISTRY OF SHOWING MERCY.
  179.  
  180.      "He that showeth mercy, (do it) with cheerfulness." Romans
  181.      12:8 This a ministry of helping people in need by giving
  182.      encouragement, showing kindness, bringing comfort as well as
  183.      by practical help. Hebrews 13:16.  It especially involves
  184.      visitation of the sick and the needy, and in the early Church,
  185.      included care of orphans and widows.  Isaiah 1:17; Zechariah
  186.      7:9,10; James 1:27.  Read Micah 6:8; Matthew 5:7; 25:34-40.

  188.      In this ministry we need to be sensitive to the needs that are
  189.      constantly around us.  Philippines 2:4; 1 John 3:17.  Though
  190.      we minister with a heart of love and self-sacrifice, God
  191.      brings reward and blessing to us in His own way.  Luke 19:17;
  192.      Isaiah 58:10,11-1 "Are you called to help other? Do it with
  193.      all the strength and energy that God will be glorified through
  194.      Jesus Christ ... " 1 Peter 4:11.  LB).

  196.      Priscilla and Aquila re good examples of this ministry and are
  197.      called "helpers in Christ Jesus".
  198.  
  199.      Romans 16:3.  They risked their lives for the apostle Paul to
  200.      help him fulfil his ministry. in Acts 18:26 we see how they
  201.      take Apollos aside to explain to him the way of God more
  202.      perfectly.  Other examples are Acts 13:5; 1 Corinthians
  203.      16:15,16.

  205. MINISTRY OF INTERCESSION.
  206.  
  207.      An intercessor is one who enters into deep prayer before God
  208.      on behalf of people and situations.  There is a great need in
  209.      the Body of Christ for this ministry.  Ezekiel 22:30; Isaiah
  210.      59-16.  In this ministry the Holy Spirit prays through the
  211.      intercessor according to God's desires.  Romans 8:26,27.  The
  212.      Greatest intercessor is Jesus.  Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25;
  213.      5:7; John 17:9.

  215.      There are different kinds of intercession.
  216.  
  217.      1.   bearing the burdens of the Lord: for nations or
  218.           individuals; or the burdens of other people who are in
  219.           desperate physical or spiritual need and may not
  220.           understand or be able to pray deeply for their need. 1
  221.           Timothy 2:1; Romans 12:15.  Jesus wept for Jerusalem. 
  222.           Luke 19:41.
  223.  
  224.      2.   travail; just as childbirth involves travail and pain,
  225.           this aspect of intercession brings something to the birth
  226.           in the Spirit (eg. ministries in the Church) and involves
  227.           travail, often accompanied by weeping and groaning. 
  228.           Isaiah 66:7; Micah 4:10; 5:3; Romans 8:26.
  229.  
  230.      3.   warfare: fighting in prayer against the Satanic powers of
  231.           darkness.  There needs to be a deep understanding that
  232.           "we wrestle not against flesh and blood  but against
  233.           principalities, against powers..." Ephesians 6:12, and
  234.           that Christ, in rising from the dead, won total victory
  235.           over Satan.  Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:20-22; Colossians
  236.           2:10.
