  2.                                 The Brazen Altar
  3.  
  4.           SERIES: MOSES. TABERNACLE.             LESSON NO.2.
  5.  
  6. 1.   THE PURPOSE.
  7.      The altar was the place of sacrifice.  It was the one and
  8.      only place of sacrifice for Israel.  It was God who ordained
  9.      the principle of sacrifice - Gen.3:21.  Adam and Eve were
  10.      covered with coats of skins which necessitated the shedding
  11.      of blood.  Heb.9:22; Lev. 17: 11.  The Hebrew word for Altar
  12.      is mizbeach, meaning a "slaughter place".
  13.      Other altars in the Bible:-
  14.      a)        Abel's           Gen.4:1-5.
  15.      b)        Noah's           Gen.8:18-20.
  16.      c)        Abraham and Isaac - Gen. 22:1-14.
  17.      We now have an Altar which is Jesus Christ and Him crucified.
  18.      Heb.13:10.

  20. 2.   THE POSITION.
  21.  
  22.      The first piece of furniture encountered upon entering the
  23.      gate of the outer court.  Once the gate of repentance has
  24.      been entered, the sacrifice of blood and the Altar (Calvary)
  25.      is unavoidable and unmistakable.  There is no approach to the
  26.      presence of God except by way of the Altar.  Jn.14:6.

  28.      This Altar was so large that every other piece of furniture
  29.      could fit inside it. Every experience and doctrine of the
  30.      Bible is wrapped up in Calvary.  It is a finished work.  As
  31.      we progress in God, our first love for Calvary should not
  32.      diminish, but rather increase and be rekindled.  We are not
  33.      to glory in things but only in the Cross of Calvary - Jesus
  34.      is to be magnified with every step we take towards maturity.

  37. 3.   THE DESIGN.  Ex.27:1-8.

  39.      V.l. "shittim wood".
  40.      Speaks of the humanity of Christ and the believer.
  41.      -    comes from the Sinai Desert - a picture of us coming
  42.           from the wilderness of sin to be shaped into a place of
  43.           sacrifice and dedication.
  44.      -    never grows straight but is gnarled and twisted - before
  45.           we come to Christ, we are knotted and twisted because of
  46.           sin.  But when God takes over He trims us up for use.
  47.           Isa.53:2.
  48.      -    the wood is hard, close-grained and not easy to shape -
  49.           we are sometimes difficult to shape up and be conformed
  50.           to His Will.
  51.      -    in spite of it's crookedness it has a fine, beautiful
  52.           grain which is revealed after it has been processed - so
  53.           in us there is a beauty, but only after proceasing.

  55. "5 cubits long, 5 cubits broad".
  56.  
  57. 5 is the number of grace and atonement - 5 wounds of Christ.
  58.      Ex.13:18 - 5 in a rank coming out of Egypt.
  59.      Gen.7:24 - Noah's Ark floated 5 months.
  60.      Rev.6:9 - 5th seal - martyrs sitting under the Altar.

  62. "3 cubits high".
  63.  
  64.      3 is the number of the Godhead. Heb.9:14 - all the Godhead
  65.      revealed in the Atonement.
  66.      3 languages inscribed on the Cross.
  67.      3 Feasts of Israel.
  68.      3 compartments in the Tabernacle.
  69. The only way to enter into the fullness of God is through the
  70. Cross.

  72. "The Altar shall be 4 square".
  73.  
  74. Rev. 21: 16 - the eternal city 4 square - speaks of eternity.
  75. One other piece of furniture 4 square - the Altar of Incense -
  76. praise and worship.
  77.  
  78. Therefore throughout eternity our theme song is going to be
  79. "worthy is the Lamb that was slain".  Our ministry of praise and
  80. worship should always be centred around the sacrifice of Calvary.

  82. "4 horns".
  83.  
  84. Horns speak of power. liab.3:4.
  85. Rom.1:16 - "Gospel of Christ ... power of God unto salvation". 1
  86. Cor. 1:18, Rev. 5:6.
  87. The 4 horns are pointing to the 4 corners of the earth - the
  88. message of the Brazen Altar is to go into all the world.
  89. Matt.24:14.
  90. Lev.8:15 - horns smeared with blood "to make reconciliation", 2
  91. Cor.5:18.

  93. "His horns shall be of the same".
  94.  
  95. Horns made of Shittim Wood - the only way the gospel can reach the
  96. 4 corners of the earth is with our lives smeared and covered with
  97. the blood of Jesus.

  99. V.4. "grate of network".
  100.  
  101. A protective covering on the outside of the Altar from the animals
  102. as they were tied to the horns of the Altar, Psa.118:27 - often
  103. God will tie us to the Altar, he place of sacrifice with cords of
  104. love.  Hos.11:4; Rom. 2:4.
  105. Acts 9:5 - the Apostle Paul "kicked against the pricks" until God
  106. drew him to the place of the Altar.
  107.  
  108. "4 brazen rings".
  109.  
  110. These 4 rings enabled the Altar to be carried.  The 4 Gospels
  111. carry the full message of the Cross and the sacrifice that was
  112. placed upon it.

  114. V.6. "staves".
  115.  
  116. Two staves to carry the Altar.
  117.  
  118. (a)  Two aspects of the Cross.
  119.  
  120.       (i) Death            (ii)  Resurrection.
  121.       -   if one is removed there is an imbalance and the Altar
  122.           cannot be carried.  We need both of these truths if the
  123.           Gospel is to be effective. 1 Cor. 15:3-4.

  125. (b)       Portable - staves enabled the Altar to be moved - as we
  126.           walk with God our sacrifice and surrender is progressive
  127.           - we are never to become stationary in our sacrifice and
  128.           dedication to Him.

  130. V. 8.     "Hollow".
  131.  
  132. No top or bottom - it was open to Heaven and Earth.  The sacrifice
  133. of Calvary, reconciles Heaven and Earth - Jesus was suspended
  134. between Earth and Heaven - a mediator between God and man.
