  5.   Growing your own garlic will give
  6. you the  best  tasting  cloves  you
  7. will find anywhere.  The first time
  8. you plant you will have  to  choose
  9. cloves from the commercially  grown
  10. bulbs.  Choose cloves which are the
  11. largest and the firmest ones.      
  12.   Prepare your planting bed and dig
  13. to about a 3 inch depth.  Make sure
  14. the soil is well broken up.  If the
  15. soil is poor nutritionally, you can
  16. fertilize at this point.           
  17.   When you are ready to plant, push
  18. your finger into the soil about  2"
  19. and place the clove point  up  into
  20. the hole.  Firm the dirt around the
  21. clove.  Do  not  remove  the  paper

  24. covering from the cloves.  Keep  each
  25. clove about 3" from each other.  This
  26. will give sufficient  space  for  the
  27. new bulbs.  Plant as many  cloves  as
  28. you feel you can use the next year.  
  29.   Water well and in a week or so, you
  30. should fertilize  if  not  previously
  31. done.  We use  Miracle-Gro  and  have
  32. had good success.  In about 2  weeks,
  33. you will see your first green  shoots
  34. poking through the ground.           
  35.   Now a strange thing will  occur  in
  36. your garden ... it will  be  bug  and
  37. pest free as long as the garlic is in
  38. the ground.  This  is one of  the un-  
  39. known advantages of growing your  own
  40. magic bulbs.
