  15.      Garlic has  been used  in China 
  16. and Japan  for  centuries  to  treat 
  17. hypertension.   In   Japan,   garlic 
  18. research has been  so  extensive and 
  19. supportive of  its therapeutic value 
  20. that the  Japanese  FDA approves its 
  21. use as a drug.

  25. reported that in 40 of 100  patients 
  26. with abnormally high blood pressure,

  31. or  more  after  about  a  week  of
  32. treatment,  initially  large  doses
  33. were  given  and   then   gradually
  34. diminished to a constant small dose
  35. as   the   improvement   continued.
  36. Additionally,   patients   felt   a
  37. reduction   in  symptoms  such   as
  38. headaches,  dizziness,  angina-like
  39. pain  and  backaches.  (Piotrowski,
  40. 1948)  The  study's  author claimed
  41. that the effect  of the  garlic was
  42. due  to  opening (dialation) of the
  43. arteries.
  44.      The   late 1960's  researchers
  45. began to  study  the lipid reducing
  46. properties of garlic.
