  10. plagues  were ravaging Europe, it is 
  11. said that those who ate garlic daily 
  12. were   not   infected.    The   same 
  13. happened to many European immigrants 
  14. who were  in  this  country  in  the 
  15. nineteenth  century  and early 1900s 
  16. when  we  were  subjected  to   many 
  17. epidemic   diseases  like  flu   and 
  18. scarlet  fever.    Those   who   ate 
  19. garlic were not touched by the bugs.

  22.       In Marseilles France, in 1722, 
  23. during  the onslaught of the plague, 
  24. four  thieves  admitted  they   were 
  25. robbing  the  bodies  of  the  dead.  
  26. They attributed their ability  to be

  29. able to handle the bodies and  not  be 
  30. infected  to  a  concoction  of   wine 
  31. vinegar  and  crushed  garlic.    This 
  32. preparation  became   known  as   FOUR 
  33. THIEVES VINEGAR and  is  credited with 
  34. protecting  many of  the  citizens  of 
  35. Marseilles from the plague.

  38.      Garlic  received  high praise for 
  39. stopping  the  spread  of  the   great 
  40. plague  which  swept  England in   the 
  41. mid-seventeenth      century.      One 
  42. household was immunized because garlic 
  43. was stored in  the  building.  Another 
  44. plague  story   concerns  French   and 
  45. English  clerics.   The  French   used 
  46. garlic and administered freely to  the 
  47. victims   of   the   plague    without
