Unregistered Version 11-05-93
Screen Tree was developed for the handling of large reports
that are generated by the account processing done by most
businesses. Lately many businesses have become more sensitive
about the amount of paper used when printing out these reports.
The Screen Tree process/program was conceived with the goal
of efficiently managing the reports as files and providing an
easy way for users to archive, view & retrieve these files
making printing unnecessary.
The Screen Tree Program involves 5 processes.
I. The file is down loaded from the company's main frame,
mini, or Lan using whatever methods are already in place
for such a procedure, with the exception of downloading the
file to the directory of C:\LOG and giving it a
proper descriptive name for example 102893GL.LOG for a
typical general ledger report. When this step is accomplished
properly Screen Tree is ready to work with the files.
II. The first selection on the Screen Tree menu is for
the viewing/printing of information contained in the
archive files that are already on the hard drive using
Vern Buergs LIST.com program. You are required to register
or obtain a site license for List as part of the agreement
for obtaining a customized registered version of Screen Tree.
III. The second selection on the menu is for viewing the archive
files on floppy disk so one can easily search for the record
with the proper date/filename. Naming the files with a date
in the above mentioned format mmddyy will make sure the sort
by date is done properly. The file list is also sorted by
the files original size so that depending on what kind of
report is archived you will be able to tell what days were
slow and which were busy.
IV. The third selection starts the back up process. This
Evaluation version uses Yoshizaki Haruyasu's LHA v213
for the archiver/compressor because it is Conditional
copyright reserved freeware. Custom versions of Screen
Tree can be written to take advantage of almost any
archiver in use by your company with the requirement
that you are using a registered version of course.
V. The fourth selection is for the retrieval of archives
from floppy disk. The user is prompted to insert the
archive floppy and type in the name of the file to restore
or press the "Tab Key" to view the archive to find the file
that you want (uses same procedure as in step III above).
As soon as the file is restored Screen Tree invokes List
for viewing/printing the required information from the file.

Enhancing Performance of Screen Tree
For this Evaluation version of Screen Tree it is required
that you put the following programs in your Dos Path and
optionally it is suggested that you place at least the first
two in a ram drive and include the ram drive in your Path.
Find.exe An external Dos program
Sort.exe An external Dos program
LHA.exe Yoshi's archiver compressor
List.com Vern Buerg's file viewer
STR-ALOG.exe The Screen Tree program
Default Settings & Compatibilities:
The unregistered version of Screen Tree uses the following
directory & filename defaults for its file manipulation:
Custom Attribute # Default Setting
1. C:\LOG For the hard drive area
2. A:\ For the archive floppy
3. .LOG For the Filename extension
This evaluation copy of Screen Tree will be looking for files
with a .LOG extension and only files with this extension will
be archived. Two temporary files are created when using the
View Archive mode: C:\C@@LIST.TMP & C:\C2@@LIST.TMP. These
files are deleted after viewing automatically.
When you order a custom version of Screen Tree you may choose
any directory for 1 or any removable media drive for 2. and
any file extension/s you prefer for 3.
Screen Tree is a non-graphical Dos program that will work on
any IBM or compatible PC/XT/AT/386/486. Monitors from the
simplest monochrome, CGA, EGA & VGA should work fine. So
far there are no known problems with running Screen Tree
as a Dos session in Windows (tm) Microsoft Corp.. You must
determine the size of hard drive and speed of CPU that will
be sufficient for the reports you wish to archive. For
performance sake at least a 386sx25 CPU & an 80meg hard drive
are recommended.
New Commands & Special Functions
In the Main Menu the old selection of "Tab Key" for preparing
a floppy disk for archiving has been replaced with "W". Also
the Format function has been added to the Prepare Disk screen.
When "U" is pressed an unconditional format of the floppy will
take place. An Erase of the disk is still achieved by pressing
"Enter" in the Prepare Disk screen.
Page 3
Also in the Main Menu of Screen Tree the "L" key will make the
archive file on the floppy Read Only. This should only be done
when no more files are to be archived to the disk.
This will help to prevent tampering with the archive but will
not prevent the disk from being erased or formatted so it is also
good to set the Write Protect Tab located on the disk. If "L"
is pressed accidentally, pressing "O" will undue the Read Only
attribute. The "O" function does not appear on the Menu screen
however to help prevent casual misuse.
Pressing "F" in the main menu will do a Dir command on the
floppy archive drive. This is the best way to check on the
"Free Space" that is available on the floppy. The average
1.2 meg floppy should hold an average of 5 to 6 megs worth of
compressed ASCII data. The average 1.4 meg floppy should
hold between 7 to 8 megs of compressed ASCII data.
Dates & Usage:
Individual users may only find Screen Tree useful for organizing
large E-mail or Capture Buffer files from modem sessions, again
it is suggested that you use a date in your filenames as described
on the first page. Using Julian Dates as part of your
filenames would also be an excellent choice. If the archive
will contain files from more than one year on the same disk you
may wish to use the date format yymmdd. Remember Screen Tree
does its date sort using the file name that you provide, which
gives you more control if you plan ahead.
Much effort has been put into the writing testing and debugging of
Screen Tree, please support this practical alternative to printing
huge reports by recommending Screen Tree to your employer.

Why Screen Tree uses List
Simply put, there is no better file viewer out their and instead of
spending much time trying to re-invent the wheel this programer
decided to make his program interface with List. When you register
List You will find that its features & performance are unbeatable.
For businesses that need to view 132 column reports List will do
this if your monitor will support 132 column mode. Very fast searches
can be done on your data files which will soon have you comparing
the activity of your friends in the next department who are thumbing
through mounds of green bar reports by hand... well lets not think
about that one. Imagine the day when half of your office space is
no longer rendered unavailable because all of those reports that used
to hide the walls are sitting in a small box on your desk. And of
course for the timid you will be pleased to know that List lets you
print all or selected parts of your reports at your convenience.
Depending on what version of List you register you will be able to
view documents up to 16megs or 32 megabytes in size and even larger
with custom versions. If you are working with files of this size
it is recommended that you use Floptical or Bernouli Box type of
media for the archive disk. Remember F1 for help screen in List.
Thank you for supporting Screen Tree "The Program, The Process, The
Alternative to printing".
