Master Control
Version 1.0 Documentation
Copyright (C) 1993, DataTek Computer Services.
All Rights Reserved.
--- Shareware Concept:
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software before buying it.
If you try a Shareware program and continue using it, you are expected to
register. Individual programs differ on details -- some request registration
while others require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue using the
software to a myriad of benefits.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software, and the
copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific exceptions as stated
below. Shareware authors are accomplished programmers, just like commercial
authors, and the programs are of comparable quality. (In both cases, there
are good programs and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy and distribute
the software, either to all and sundry or to a specific group. For example,
some authors require written permission before a commercial disk vendor may
copy their Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You should find
software that suits your needs and pocketbook, whether it's commercial or
Shareware. The Shareware system makes fitting your needs easier, because you
can try before you buy. And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.
Shareware has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
--- Disclaimer / Agreement
Users of Master Control must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
Master Control is supplied as is. The author disclaims all warranties,
expressed or implied, including, without limitation, the warranties of
merchantability and of fitness for any purpose. The author assumes no
liability for damages, direct or consequential, which may result from the
use of Master Control.
Master Control is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to the
user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends, but please do
not give it away altered or as part of another system. The essence of
"user-supported" software is to provide personal computer users with quality
software without high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using Master Control and continue to use it after a 30 day
trial period, you must make a registration payment to DataTek Computer
Services.
Commercial users of Master Control must register and pay for their copies of
Master Control within 30 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting DataTek Computer Services.
Anyone distributing Contact Manger for any kind of remuneration must first
contact DataTek Computer Services at the address below for authorization.
This authorization will be automatically granted to distributors recognized
by the (ASP) as adhering to its guidelines for shareware distributors, and
such distributors may begin offering Master Control immediately. However
DataTek must still be advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date
with the latest version of Master Control.
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Master Control along to your friends for
evaluation. Please encourage them to register their copy if they find that
they can use it. All registered users will receive a copy of the latest
version of Master Control along with other benefits described below.
--- Installation:
To install Master Control (MC), simply create a sub-directory and
decompress the distribution file to this sub-directory. For the purpose
of example we will assume that the user is copying the Master Control.ZIP
(MCXXXXX.ZIP) file from drive A to drive C. You will have to substitute
whatever drive you intend to use.
Change to drive C type C: [press Enter]
make sure you're in
the root directory type CD\ [press Enter]
create the sub-directory type MD MC [press Enter]
change to this new
sub-directory type CD MC [press Enter]
copy the compressed file
to the sub-directory type COPY A:\MCXXXXX.ZIP C: [press Enter]
Decompress the file type PKUNZIP MCXXXXXX.ZIP [press Enter]
delete the .ZIP file type DEL MCXXXXX.ZIP [press Enter]
That's it!
--- Overview:
Master Control is a complete electronic desktop that allows you to easily
use your computer efficiently and productively. MC includes our popular
Contact Manager and Appointment Scheduler programs and adds an Application
Launcher, pop-up Calculator, File Manager, To Do List, Notes & Reminders
List and much more. MC is mouse aware but NOT mouse dependent and uses
intuitive screen design to make data entry and editing fast and easy.
The program is mouse aware so you may use the keyboard function keys or use
the mouse to click on the menu to activate the desired task.
--- Starting The Program:
Start the program by typing 'MC' at the DOS prompt.
The following screen will appear. In the registered version your name and
serial number will appear and the question "Would you like to print the
order form?" will not appear.
Press 'Y' to print the order form and 'N' to skip the order form and enter
the program.

If you stay on this screen the screen saver will take over in about 1
minute. This is the only place where the screen saver will activate
automatically. (Some of the routines we use in MC ignore the TIMER
function which is normally used to activate any screen saver. We're working
on enhancements to the routines to solve this shortfall.)
--- Main Screen
The main screen for MC will show you the list of available options, today's
date, current time and, if registered, the 'Registered To' name. The options
are:
Application Launcher
Contact Manager
File Manager
Appointment Scheduler
Calculator
System Information
To Do List
Notes/Reminders
Utilities
Quit
Choose a function by using the up and down arrow keys to highlight the
function you want, then press Enter, or you can simply double-click on the
function you want to start. Below the selection menu you'll see an option
to engage then Screen Saver. Press F10 to do so. You should always engage
the screen saver when you will not be working on the computer for a while.
The Utilities function will display a sub-menu that allows you to choose
from the following list:
Set Mouse Sensitivity
Format Diskette
Shell to DOS
Quit to Main Menu
You can select these items in the same way that you select an item from the
Main Menu. The F10 - Screen Saver option is also available from this screen.
--- Application Launcher
The Application Launcher is a menuing system and allows to you to list your
programs and startup commands and then launch the programs from within MC.
The menu is mouse aware and you can launch a program by pressing enter when
the program you want to start is highlighted or double-click on a program
title.
You move around the menu by using the up and down arrow keys.
--- Add a Program to the Menu
To add a new program to the menu, click on the Add box or press 'A'.
A new box will appear in place of the menu. You will need to enter the
Application Name and then enter the series of commands needed to start the
program. For example, if you wanted to add Quattro Pro which is located in
your G:\QPRO directory, your screen might appear like this:
Application Name:
QUATTRO PRO
Launch Command(s):
G:
CD\QPRO
Q
You can add this item to the menu by pressing F1 (Save) or cancel the entry by
pressing F2 (Cancel).
In essence the Application Launcher saves your commands to create a batch
file. When you choose this program from the menu the batch file is
created, the Application Launcher removes itself and Master Control from
memory and runs the batch file. Commands are automatically added to the batch
file to restart MC when you are done with the application.
--- Change the Commands for an Existing Menu Entry
To change the launch commands for a program on the menu, use the arrow keys
to highlight the item you wish to alter then click on the Change box or
press 'C'.
A new box will appear in place of the menu showing the name of the
application and the current launch commands for that program. Use the
arrow keys to move around the command window and change whatever needs to
be changed. You can save these changes by pressing F1 (Save) or cancel the
update by pressing F2 (Cancel).
--- Delete a Menu Entry
To delete a program on the menu, use the arrow keys to highlight the item
you wish to delete then click on the Delete box or press 'D'.
The item will be removed from the menu and the menu will be re-displayed.
--- Quitting the Menu
To quit the Application Launcher without making a choice, click on the Quit
box or press 'Q'. Your cursor bar will then move back to the MC Main Menu and
the Application Launcher menu will be cleared from the screen.
--- Contact Manager:
Contact Manager is a complete electronic tracking system to keep up with
customer/clients. CM is mouse aware but NOT mouse dependent and uses
intuitive screen design to make data entry and editing fast, easy,
efficient and productive. All data for each client is contained on a
single screen.
Contact Manager creates one database which you can subdivide into groups
for organizational purposes. The program is mouse aware so you may use the
keyboard function keys or use the mouse to click on the menu to activate
the desired task.
--- Mouse Editing:
When editing the data fields you may press F4 to advance through the fields
one at a time or simply click on the single field you want to edit. When you
are done click anywhere off the highlighted field and your data will be
saved. You may also use the mouse to move around inside the edit field.
When you click on a field, the field and any data in it change colors and the
cursor is placed at the beginning of the field. If you need to edit something
at the end of the field, just place your mouse cursor where you want to start
the edit and click once.
--- Command Function Keys:
You may access the function commands in three different ways.
1) Press the F10 key or click on the F10 Menu block to view the pop-up menu.

--- Zip Code Sorting:
CM allows you to sort labels by Zip Code. There are memory constraints to
be concerned with when sorting large numbers of records. CM now checks for
enough available memory before starting a sort routine, thereby avoiding a
system lockup. If CM detects that you do not have enough memory to sort a
large database, try printing labels by groups. While not a perfect solution,
it will still make the job manageable and accomplish the desired result with
very little extra work.
--- Appointment Scheduler:
Appointment Scheduler is a complete electronic calendar and appointment
system to keep your schedule organized and clear. AS uses intuitive screen
design to make data entry and editing fast, easy, efficient and productive.

Alt-L Launch the Pop-Up calculator
F2 Print Print the schedule for the appointment date currently
displayed
F4 New Date Exit the edit mode and return to the date selection mode
F10 Quit Exit the program
Along the bottom of the screen other commands will appear. They are:
Alt-E Clear All Entries for this date.
Alt-O Copy the currently highlighted item to be pasted elsewhere.
Alt-T Cuts/Removes the currently highlighted item to be pasted
elsewhere.
Alt-P Pastes/Places a previously copied or cut item into the
currently highlighted field replacing any text that is there.
When you are in the edit mode, the 7:00 am line in the schedule window will
change color. Whatever line is highlighted is the line you are currently
editing. You can change lines by using the following keys:
■ Up Arrow - Arrow Up
■ Down Arrow - Arrow Down
■ Page Up - Filled Triangle Up
■ Page Down - Filled Triangle Down
The symbol ■ appears on these pages and of the representation of the screen
above. It represents the placement of graphic arrows that cannot be displayed
in this type of printed document. The laser printed manual shows all the
correct arrows and their respective placements on the screens.
When you are done editing, press F4 to select a new date, or F10 to Quit.
Either key will save your data immediately.
We usually use a | to express a continued appointment, you can use any
character on the keyboard instead of retyping and entire description.
Ex. To express a 1 hour breakfast meeting you might choose to enter the
data like this.
7:00 Breakfast with George & Mary
7:15 |
7:30 |
8:45 |
This would block the 7:00 to 7:45am slots on the 'Day-At-A-Glance'.
Any character in a time field will cause the Day-At-A-Glance to show that
time slot as filled.
--- Delete Record(s):
The Delete Record(s) screen presents you with a list of dates for which
data files are present. You may delete the data files associated with each
by either pressing enter on the highlighted date or double-clicking on the
highlighted date.
To exit this section, press the F10 key.
--- Print Schedule:
When you press F2 to Print a Daily Schedule you will be presented with an
option box.
╔═════════════════════╗
║ [F]ull Schedule ║
║ [A]ppointments Only ║
╚═════════════════════╝
If you pressed F2 in error you can cancel the print function by pressing the
ESC key. If you want to print a schedule you may choose from a Full Schedule
or Appointments Only.
Full Schedule prints all the time slots for the day regardless of
whether or not any of the time slots are used.
Appointments Only prints only the time slots that are used.
--- File Manager:
The File Manager is a fully functional utility designed to let you quickly
move, copy, delete, view, time stamp, sort, and encrypt files along with
some other useful features. Granted, this is not a PCTools or X-Tree caliber
program, but then it was never intended to compete with these products. For a
quick move or copy it will do nicely.
On the left side of the screen is the directory listing, on the right the
command list. At the top of the screen is the file specification box which
doubles as the input box.
The program is mouse aware, to perform any function you must select files
first. You do this by clicking on the filename or moving the cursor bar and
hitting the Enter key. You can use the menu scroll bar to see additional
filenames or use the arrow keys to move around the listing.
You can change drives and directories by placing the cursor bar on the
appropriate listing and double clicking or pressing Enter.
--- Command Keys:
F1 - Edit File Specification allows you to display only certain files that
match specification that you enter. Normally FM starts with a file spec of
*.* (all files), if you wanted to display just .TXT files you use the F1 key
and enter '*.TXT' in the file specification box.
F2 - Copy does just what it says. This command copies selected files from the
current directory to whatever directory you specify in the File Specification
box which will change to the 'Copy To:' box.
F3 - The Move command copies files from the current directory to whatever
directory you specify in the File Specification box, which will change to the
'Move To:' box, then it deletes the files from the current directory and
re-displays an amended listing.
Ctrl-F4 - The Delete command was purposely made a combination key command to
prevent the accidental deletion of files. This command will delete all marked
files in the listing. It does NOT ask if you are sure.
F5 - Toggle Detail Display will either remove or re-display the file size,
date, and time.
F6 - Sort by File Name is the default listing manner, but this command allows
you to return to a listing sorted by filenames if you have switched the sort
at some other time.
F7 - Sort by File Extension will display the directory listing sorted by the
extension to the file. All .EXE's will be grouped together, all .COM's, etc.
F8 - Sort by File Size will display the listing sorted by file size from
smallest at the top of the listing to largest at the bottom.
F9 - Sort by File Date will display the listing sorted by the file date from
oldest at the top to newest at the bottom.
F10 - Display File Contents dumps an image of the file to the screen. The
viewer does allow a search function and is scrollable.
Alt-F10 - Display File Contents (Strip Hi-Bit) is the same as F10 except this
function strips the hi-bit mask before displaying the file.
ENTER - Selects a file. Multiple files can be selected.
Alt M/C - Mark/Clear All Files. Alt M allows to to mark all the files
displayed in a single key combination. Alternatively Alt C allows you to
clear all marked files.
Alt T - Time Stamp allows you to reset the date and time signature of all
marked files to your system's current date and time.
Alt R/S - Run/Shell Program allows you to either Run or Shell to a marked
file. Alt R will terminate FM and Master Control and run the marked program.
Alt S will shell to the marked program and return to FM when you are
finished.
Alt F - Make .TXT Marked Files makes a .TXT (text) file listing of the files
currently marked. This can be useful in many situations.
Esc - Quits the File Manager and returns you to the Master Control Menu.
Alt E - Encrypt files. This feature is no shown on the screen for security
reasons. It occurred that if this program is used in a business environment
and a disgruntled employee saw this command. It would be possible for them to
encrypt all files on the system with various passwords. And that is the
function of Alt E, to encrypt and password protect the marked files. You can
Decrypt the files by choosing Alt E again and typing in the same password.
Choosing Alt E twice and using DIFFERENT passwords will double-encrypt the
file. If you choose to double encrypt the file, remember that you must double
decrypt the file using the same passwords in REVERSE ORDER.
Example:
Filename TEXT.TXT CORRECT
Alt E Encrypt Password: ONE
Alt E double encrypt Password: TWO
Alt E double decrypt Password: TWO
Alt E decrypt Password: ONE
Filename TEXT.TXT WRONG
Alt E Encrypt Password: ONE
Alt E double encrypt Password: TWO
Alt E double decrypt Password: ONE
Alt E decrypt Password: TWO
This option should be used with extreme care and caution. Once a file is
encrypted there is no way to decrypt the file without the password and there
is no way to uncover the password within the file.
--- Calculator:
When activated the calculator appears on the right side of the screen. You
have the option to send the calculator output to the printer by pressing the
F7 function key before beginning the math.
The calculator handles all four basic math functions and requires single key
entry for a calculation to occur. Example:
To add 2+2 you would enter 2 + 2 Enter
To subtract 4-2 4 - 2 Enter
Some calculators require dual key entry: 2 + 2 + Enter or 4 + 2 - Enter
You complete a calculation by pressing the Enter key. You may then choose
'A' for Another or 'Q' to Quit and return to the MC menu.
--- System Information:
This function provides a fairly comprehensive listing of your system
components, available drive space, memory specifications, etc. When selected
the function will go out a look at all your components, this may take a few
seconds or a few minutes if you have a slow CD-ROM or WORM drive.
The function is designed to recognize different types of drives (Floppy,
Fixed, Worm/CD Rom, Removable, Network, etc.) however, some third party
device drivers like Corel SCSI or Disk Manager may cause the routine to
report information that you know is not correct. Example: while testing, the
routine SOMETIMES reported our E drive as a WORM/CD-ROM even though it's a
SCSI fixed disk, other times it reported the drive correctly - we use Corel
SCSI to handle our multiple SCSI devices.
The function report total space and available space on each drive and the
same information for all drives combined, this gives you a good overall view
of your system's capacity and usage. It will report total conventional,
extended, and expanded memory, again third party drives like QEMM or 386MAX
that remap memory may cause the routine to report erroneous numbers.
In both cases we are trying to solve the third party reporting problems, but
this depends on the third parties giving us the information we need to do so,
none-the-less, we will continue to strive for a more reliable reporting
structure help or no help.
The function will report the type of video and video memory (the may be off
due to the way different manufacturers structure their cards to report
installed memory or if a third party driver has remapped Mono or VGA memory).
The version of DOS, the number of serial and parallel ports, and whether or
not a math coprocessor is installed is also reported.
You can page up and down through the various screens by using the Page Up and
Page Down keys or you may simply click on the Pg Up and Pg Dn boxes on the
screen.
--- To Do List / Notes & Reminders:
These two functions use the same command structure and work exactly alike.
In fact, they are the same routine generating separate data files to keep the
functions separated. Therefore a separate discussion of each function would
be redundant.
The screen consists of 4 option boxes, an edit line and a scrolling display
window. you can move up and down through the entries in the display window
by using the up and down arrow keys or clicking the mouse on any item.
F1 - The Edit command copies the currently highlighted item into the edit
bar. While editing you can use Alt-C to clear the line or Alt-R to restore
an item just cleared.
F3 - Clear All removes all entries from the listing.
F5 - Print/Save/Exit will print a listing of all entries, save the current
list and exit to the MC main menu.
F10 - Save/Exit will save the current list and exit to the MC main menu.
--- Utilities:
The utilities section allows you to:
Set Mouse Sensitivity
Format a Diskette
Shell to DOS
The F10 Screen Saver is still active in this menu and you can return to the
MC main menu by double clicking or pressing Enter on the 'Quit to Main Menu'
field.
--- Set Mouse Sensitivity:
If your mouse is reacting to slowly or to quickly to your movements, you can
set the sensitivity using this feature. Enter a number between 1 and 100 in
the Vertical and Horizontal movement boxes and press 'O' or click on the 'Ok'
box. You can cancel the procedure by pressing 'C' or clicking on the Cancel
box.
The lower the number the more slowly the mouse will respond to your hand
movements. We find that any number over 70 and below 15 is so hopelessly
insensitive as to be impossible to work with. While we could have limited
the range, we found that there are cases, for example with the physically
challenged, that it may be wise to keep the lower limits available for use.
--- Format Diskette:
With this routine you can format floppy disks in either drive A or B to
any standard setting (360K, 1.2M, 720K, 1.4K). The routine also reports any
errors, available space and allows you to enter a volume label if desired.
--- Shell to DOS:
If you need to jump to DOS to check something, use this option. When in DOS
type EXIT to return to the MC main menu.

--- Support:
DataTek Computer Services in a small company that I run part-time from my
home. Like many people I have a regular job that keeps my family fed. I am
usually available every night between 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm Eastern time and
from 8:00 am to 11:00pm on weekends. Occasionally I go out for an evening or
go on vacation, but my answering machine is ALWAYS on and I will return your
call assuming you leave a number and the best time to call you.
I will be just as happy to help Shareware users as I am to help registered
users, however, assuming there is a list of users for me to call, registered
users will be moved to the top of it. Fair is fair. As far as I'm concerned
support is perpetual.
You can contact DataTek in any of the following ways:
