ABL2Dial v2.0
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BBS List Conversion System
for the Austin BBS List
Copyright 1989, 1990 by Frank Ramaekers, Jr.
Documentation by William Collins & Allen Patman
==============================================================================
DESCRIPTION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABL2Dial reads a BBS list and converts it to dialing directories of
popular communications programs.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FEATURES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABL2Dial 2.0 provides output for:
o ProComm Plus 2.0+
o ProComm Plus 1.0+
o ProComm 2.4.2
o QModem 4.0+
o QModem 4.1b+
o Telemate 2.0+
o Telix 3.0+
ABL2Dial 2.0 builds on the original ABL2Dial, with differences as follows:
o Recognizes modems speeds greater than 9600.
o Recognizes V.42bis and MNP5 designations and adjusts the
DTE speed accordingly
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
USAGE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The ABL2Dial input file defaults to AUSTINmm.yy, where mm is the month and
yy is the year. (Ex.: AUSTIN01.90)
Input and output can be selected either with point-and-shoot menus, or by
pressing the highlighted letter of each option. ABL2Dial also supports the
use of a mouse for input. Wildcard characters provide menus which allow
the user to ascend and descend the directory tree. The output type
defaults to ProComm Plus 2.0+; the output filename, to AUSTIN.DIR.
Default modem settings are 2400 bps, No parity, 8 data bits, and 1 stop
bit (2400 N-8-1). The defaults for the terminal and transfer protocol are
ANSI and XModem, respectively.
Selecting other output types will automatically provide new defaults
varying according to the capabilities of each communications package.
____________________________________________________________
| | Output | | Default |
| Communications | File | Default | Transfer |
| Package | Extension | Terminal | Protocol |
|______________________|___________|____________|__________|
| ProComm Plus 2.0+ | .DIR | ANSI | XModem |
| ProComm Plus 1.0+ | .DIR | ANSI | XModem |
| ProComm 2.4.2 | .DIR | n/a | n/a |
| QModem 4.0+ | .FON | n/a | XModem |
| QModem 4.1b+ | .FON | n/a | XModem |
| Telemate 2.0+ | .FON | ANSI | XModem |
| Telix 3.0+ | .FON | ANSI-BBS | XModem |
============================================================
The modem menu will allow the user to reset the speed, parity, data and
stop bits ABL2Dial will use. The speeds, from 300 to 115200, should
reflect the maximum bps the modem is capable of transmitting; boards
with slower speeds will be set to their own maximum. Parity choices are
none, even, and odd; data bits, seven and eight; stop bits, one and two.
The terminal and protocol menus give access to various terminal emulations
and transfer protocols, and are dependent upon the particular output type
selected.
Once the desired input and output have been chosen, simply select "Begin"
from the top menu. "Quit" or <ESC> will quit ABL2Dial.
The Austin BBS List follows the following format:
ABL2Dial MAY in the future have extract, sorting and merge capabilities.
If you have any problems (or suggestions) with this release, let me know
and I'll do my best to solve or incorporate the suggestion.
Notes:
1) Building of the dialing directories is keyed off the phone number.
number. If a '-' is not found in position 38 the entry is
completely ignored. Additionally the 3 digits that preceeds
and the 4 digits that follow the '-' must be numeric before
being considered a valid entry.
2) The bps (bits per second) column is not validated at all. The
program simply multiplies the value in this column by 100 to
arrive at the bps speed. Therefore, a invalid entry like 123
will still work. It will be evaluated as 12300 bps and try to
equate that value to 19200 (the next higher rate).
3) The character position following the bps is the compression
type. Currently only the 'B' and 'M' are considered. Upon
encountering a 'B' (indicating v.42bis compression) the DCE
rate (as listed in bps column) is multiplied by 4 (the
maximum theoretical DTE rate). A 'M' represents MNP5 which
has a maximum theoretical DTE rate of 2 times the DCE speed.
Example: 96B
9600 (DTE rate) x 4 (v.42bis) = 38400 (DCE rate)
4) The notes column for the most part is for informational
purposes only. To provide a method of listing non-standard
boards in the BBS listing two special characters in this
field have a special meaning. The first is the slash ('/')
character. When encountered, the duplex is changed from full
to half duplex. A '7' will alter the communications
parameters from N81 to E71. All other characters in this
field are ignored.
Have fun,
Frank Ramaekers, Jr.
If it doesn't work, tough. If it turns your hard disk into a neutron bomb,
bummer (although I would appreciate being informed). Now that that's out of
the way, I will say that I did test this stuff pretty thoroughly before
sending it out with my name on it, and that it works great for me and my
friends.
Mirror shades and lead shielding optional.
