I deeply apologize for the lateness of the last issue, but it was a bonus edition. I spent some time exploring the World Wide Web today. What an incredible. Layers of information all hyperindexed for quick access. I am impressed. I visited T. Wolmer's page, and if you have access to WWW I highly recommend checking it out. Well, after having another battle of ordering Cds through music stores, I have just about decided that some record labels ought to be hamstrung for their stupidity. It seems totally ignorant to me that a label stops making some releases because they don't sell as expected. True are is priceless. Well, before I slip into a frenzy lets get started. On a little planet called Earth, just three stones from the Sun, there was an artistic genre of music known as Heavy Metal. A funny thing began to happen. After many years of underground growth, media support for the scene began to dry-up. The conventional, mainstream media decided that it was unhip. So they moved on to larger cash cows to slaughter. And while the worldwide scene is at a peek level of output, offering a diverse range of bands that includes Pitch Shifter, Death, Meshuggah, Bush, Catherine Wheel, Brother Cane, Kyuss, Genocide (Rapcore Metal), Stuck Mojo, Misery Loves Company, and Overkill, the media support for the scene is withering and dying. MTV cancelled Headbangers' Ball, which at its best was lackluster. But it did provide some exposure for Metal. The worst sign of media stupidity is what I like to call "The Conversion." This occurs when a media outlet (radioshow, magazine, whatever) changes its format. This occurred two weeks ago with Metalshop. Metalshop, now sorrowfully known as Rockshop, was a syndicated radioprogram that for many of us was the only exposure we had to good music thanks to the pathetic radiostations in the area. Metalshop had tried heavying-up its playlist by only playing the top 5 most played Metal Tracks from Metal Radiostations. This was good. It tended to weed-out the most conventional items that were readily heard on the most spineless rockstations. They played stuff by such bands as Wrath, The Obsessed, Entombed, Cathedral, Paradise Lost, Carcass, Downset, Orange 9mm., Sick Of It All, and Marilyn Manson. Even at it's best, Metalshop was still too conventional. They played too much of the same stuff. Then the conversion happened. Two weeks ago Metalshop died. And Rockshop was spawned. There format is now "cutting edge rock." This is a real nice way of saying, "we only play Alternative now, because that is what sells." Okay. Excuse me for asking, but why do they want to die? This scene is so tremendously oversaturated. And five years from now no one will care. The sheep will have moved on to the next fad. I have been a loyal fan of Metalshop since 1987. Everyweek I listened to it. I planned my time around it so I wouldn't miss it. That's how hungry I was for new Metal. The past year I had been tempted to quit, as I said for the fact that they were still too conventional. I am tempted now even more to quit. I will give them a month...maybe 2. If I do not hear something ULTRA Heavy, I'm pulling the plug. Lastweek I knew something was up. When the Most Valuable Track was "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me" by U2 I thought, in the words of the immortal bard "There is something rotten in the state of Denmark" (just a little more colorfully). I like all types of Metal, even what I call "Low- End" Metal. Low-end Metal consists of mellower bands like Better Than Ezra, Green Day, etc. But why do I want to stay-up late, fork-out money for a cassette, and listen to a show that plays stuff that I can hear on the spineless stations? There is no logical reason. I swore to myself that I would never use the term "sold-out," and I won't this time either eventhough that is what this incident smacks of with great glee. Don't worry about the music; the style has many years to go. I foresee no end to this style. We're just more underground now. Don't be disheartened. It's the perils of life that make the victory that much the sweeter. Keep the faith. Later. *** Video Picks *** 10 (or more) music videos that I think are cool, innovative, and/or have great songs. "One" by Metallica. *** Turn Of The Screw *** This section has an album review. "...And Here I Die...Satisfied" by Grave: Black Dawn by Bill Vogel III August 18, 1995 A.D. Greetings. My latest offering is the EP "...And Here I Die...Satisfied" by Grave. Grave is a simple Death Metal band who's sound is as heavy and slow as molten lead. This EP came-out prior to their latest LP titled "Soulless." It is a six track EP that merges Grave's sound from their two previous LPs, "Into The Grave" and "You'll Never See," with "Soulless." Their first two albums had a faster approach which was more raw and depended more heavily on aggression. Their sound now is slower and more groove etched, and is the better for it. The first three tracks are the newest ones. One of these, "Black Dawn," was a leftover from the days when Grave used the moniker Corpse. The last three songs are much more early Grave influences, and I believe they also had been released at some from prior to "...And Here I Die...Satisfied." The first song, "...And Here I Die...Satisfied," is awesome. The guitar is smooth and heavy, with lots of crunch. The rhythm has a nice steady mosh beat. The melody is very catchy, and it is an excellent start- off track for this Cd. It's slower, but it is very heavy. The next song is "I Need You." As Grave slowed their tempo, they have made-up for it in sheer darkness. This one is slower than the first track at the start, and not quite as good. But it grows on the listener with every listen. It picks-up speed, and gets better. Awesome, but the best is next. Then there is "Black Dawn," my favorite track from this Cd. This is an old Corpse track, and easily the most awesome song on this Cd. It's fast, and the beat is like a psychotic jackrabbit on steroids. Very cool. This song is furious. The melody sticks in my head. And the guitar, WOW! Simple, aggressive, low-brow Death. Genius! "Tremendous Pain" is next. This is another one that I truly dig. Jackhammer rhythm that pulverizes all mediocre mainstream junk. Tremendous stuff. The fifth song is titled "Day Of Mourning." It's another favorite of mine. The vocal is undecipherable at many points. Sort of a Brutal Truth meets Naked City vocal. Awesome. The final track is called "Inhuman," and it's awesome also. Great stuff from a great band. Grave's lyrics could be better, but I love their sound. Awesome. Simple, slow, high aggression Death Metal. Get this Cd. Freedom Forever. Later. July 11, 1995 A.D. Here's some of the best, and worst, news of the month. ... Greetings dark souls. Here's the first section of slammin' Metal news in this issue of Hate Box. Bite down hard. Fudge Tunnel/// Strong rumor has it that Fudge Tunnel has disbanded. I truly hope that this is ONLY RUMOR. They have just released a Cd of some of their rarity tracks. This includes their cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes," which was only previously available on the Black Sabbath tribute Cd called "Masters Of Misery" that was only available in Japan. This new Fudge Tunnel compilation is called "In A Word." And if you don't have it you should also get their most recent opus titled "The Complicated Futility Of Ignorance." Mindrot/// These Death Metal maniacs hava just released their debut LP titled "Forlorn." They also have a track on the latest and greatest Death Metal compilation called "Death Is Just The Beginning...III." Extreme Noise Terror/// This band has been spewing Deathgrind for the past 11 years, and now they have finally released an album here in the states. The opus is called "Retribution," and it is a compilation Cd. An interesting fact about Extreme Noise Terror is that they have two vocalists. They both growl, there is only a slight difference in the depth of their growls. Extreme Noise Terror's sound fits into the Deathgrind/Thrash Metal subgenre. Pitch Shifter/// Good news! The first Pitch Shifter EP titled "Submit" has been reissued by Earache Records. Plus, this reissue features bonus tracks that were previously unreleased. Terrorizer/// Another Earache reissue is Terrorizer's classic "World Downfall." This is a Grindcore Metal classic. Bush/// Now touring the U.S. is Bush. Their opening acts are Hum and The Toadies. Mehuggah/// Listen up!!! The new Meshuggah cd, "Destroy Erase Improve," has finally hit the store shelves. If you're into progressive Industrial/Grindcore Metal then grab this one and hold-on tight. Wolf/// I usually don't discuss movies, but check this one out. It is a totally different type of werewolf movie. Very cool. And all types of tastes have liked it. And the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. ***Sound BITES*** ====== =BIAS= ====== _RATING_ Revolutionary 10 Album makes incredible strides forward creating something totally new, yet classic, that will always sound creative and inventive even years from now. Evolutionary 8 Album may build on what has been done by others, (this is hard not to do!) but makes something new that can still be one of the best albums of the year and be a fave for years to come. OK 5 Album does nothing new, but could still be called good by a person who hasn't heard much music. Suck-o-tron 3 This album may have some good points, but the overall project is not worth the silicon it's been etched in. Run Away 1 This is crap. KMFDM: Nihil Wax Trax 1995 Industrial/guitar This is much better than Angst, which was pretty cool. There's the radio play pop stuff, like Juke Joint Jezebel, but there's also dark, distorted stuff, like Revolution, which has this trance-inducing stuttering riff that is my favorite on the CD. Over all, the album leans toward Revolution, which is good! It's more consistant than Angst, with more of the songs having the same aforementioned feel, which does not make it repetitive, just easier to listen to the whole thing. Many of the songs are sung by Pig, an old vocalist of theirs, and I think it's a big improvement. He sounds much angrier, and uses more distortion. Highly recommended if you like this sort of thing! Rating: 7.8 (while they evolved their own sound, I'm not sure they evolved music in general). SENTENCED: Amok Century Media 1995 Death rock? Whatever this is, it's good. Going even further away from death metal than Amorphis, this band retains enough anger -- and superb musicianship -- to make this album highly enjoyable. The music is hard to describe, creating something at least evolutionary. What sounds like female vocals on one or 2 songs actually adds to the music, and does not give theimpression of mindless trend-following. The guitars have a symphonic feel to them, almost sounding like a fast violin at times, and giving a hint of being epic. Growls crossed with singing are the vocals. Much of this is mid paced, and will leave hard-core death metal fans cold. Some of the music is actually beautiful... is anyone still reading?? ;) If you are, you may like this, it is quite excellent. Rating: 8 HELPLESS AMONG FRIENDS: various artists Tooth and Nail 1994 Hardcore and Punk Christian hardcore? Well, I suppose that's fitting, as many hardcore bands have a cause, be it vegetarianism, homosexual rights, straight edge, etc. Sixteen different bands grace this compilation, and most of them are excellent. Only 2 or 3 are preachy, making this a good buy even for anyone who may not be too fond of those types of lyrics. Most of the album is made up of many different styles of hardcore. There's some punk, which I am less fond of than hardcore, but it is listenable, even for me. Overall, a strong compilation that rages most of the time, and is cool or fun the rest of the time. Rating: 6.8 +++++++++ BIAS EAR BLEEDER SELECTION OF THE MONTH +++++++++ KATAKLYSM: Mystical Gates of Reincarnation Nuclear Blast America 1993 Death/Grind/Insanity Ahhh, the mighty Kataklysm. In my semi-humble opinion, one of the greatest out there. This EP *is* only 4 songs long, but these songs are amazing; tho with a slightly less symphonic feel than the new LP, Sorcery. I actually like this a little better than Sorcery, if only because it's hard for me to listen to a whole album of Kat. and still pay attention. Imagine music filled with every kind of growl or screech imaginable, (except those that might copy another band), and so many changes in guitars and drums, your head will spin. Not that it doesn't all fit together perfectly, meshing into a maelstrom of power, rage and complexity to make you smile as you bang your head. This is Kataklysm, feast your ears. Rating: 9 FRONTLINE ASSEMBLY: Millenium Roadrunner 1994 Industrial/guitar For those of you who have heard old FLA, some of it remains: the vocals (which I hate) and plenty of electronics. But they have also sampled Pantera riffs, and other greats. When they couldn't sample the guitars they wanted, they had Devin Townsend -- now of Strapping Young Lad -- play guitar for them. The result is very listenable, for industrial and metal fans. FLA did manage to drive away quite a few fans of their older material, and to me, that was a plus;) I love it when industrial fans get all uppity about metal invading what they consider their territory. Anyway, I think this is a cool album by great musicians who were made even greater by adding metal into the mix. The result is the anguish of old school industrial meeting touches of anger in metal. This is a far cry from Strapping Young Lad, or Circle of Dust; though it is original sounding, it is not that heavy. If this sounds cool, get it. This would be Biohazard last UK headlining date before recording their new LP... The evening was a New York triple header with all 3 bands hailing from the big apple. First band, Orange 9mm went down well. Leading upto the gig I hadn't heard any of their material but it was pretty dam good, Evan from 'Hazard doing guest vocals on one of the songs. Then came NY funcore crew, DOG EAT DOG for their 8th London show of 1995. In case you dont know DED are pretty big news in the uk thanx to continual MTV airplay and masses of gigs and promotions. Therefore when the band came on the place went fucking crazy, barrages of surfers and divers made sure security EARNT there money. It was frontman JOHN CONNERS birthday and he performed brilliantly keeping the crowd dancing throughout. They played two new songs, BULLETPROOF and NUMB. Their set climaxed with the hilarious "More Beer" and a huge stagedive from John himself. ** NB thanx and peace to SCOTT MUELLER from Dog Eat Dog for getting me into the show on the guestlist. YOU RULE.** Now it was time for the shit to really hit the fan. As the intro to "URBAN DISCIPLINE" started playing the stage gradually became illuminated by a stronger and stronger red light untill. BOOM. The super powerfull heavy riff to the song came crashing in, accompanied by orange searchlights probing the stage and a huge Biohazard back-banner lowering from the ceiling. The crowd went suitably mental and exploited the stages one main weakness: Although security could stop you getting on the stage from the front, by scaling the amps it was possible to get on stage from the sides. THAT REALLY PISSED THE SECURITY GUYS OFF. Bodies flew onto and of of the stage. They then bruised straight into "WHAT MAKES US TICK?" without even stopping in between. Then they smashed through, WRONG SIDE OF THE TRACKS, BUSINESS, WERE ONLY GOINA DIE, SHADES OF GREY and PUNISHMENT. At that point there were around 25 kids onstage with the band..so after PUNISHMENT Bobby (Hambel, guitarist) decided to tell the crowd "S'called stage diving, not stage hoggin' you know..look watch me." With that he dived into the crowd followed by Billy (Graziedie, Guitarist, Vocals). After that little breather they pummelled through DOWN FOR LIFE, TALES FROM THE HARDSIDE, HOW IT IS, 5 BLOCKS TO THE SUBWAY and LOVE DENIED. The set climaxed with members of Biohazard, Dog Eat Dog and ORANGE 9mm all on stage to do a cover of cypress hills, WE AINT GOIN OUT LIKE DAT. After the show I got to go backstage and meet the band, they are truly great guys. Once at 9:30 a.m. (EST) / 8:30 a.m. (CST), and at 5:30 p.m. (EST) / 4:30 p.m. (CST). The episode that is on in the morning is the same as the one from the previous afternoon.
