  105. has announced that they will go ahead with plans to produce the game...

  107. to the growing list of upcoming Marvel/DC crossovers you can add a
  108. Green Lantern/Silver Surfer crossover written by Ron Marz and illustrated
  109. by Darryl Banks; don't expect to see it until mid- to late-'96, though...

  111. Spokesmen for Hanna-Barbera and the Cartoon Network say that the rumored
  112. romance between Jonny Quest and Race Bannon's daughter in the new animated
  113. series is just a rumor; and they also confirm that, in order to make sure
  114. the new Jonny Quest series is accessible by as many fans as possible,
  115. the series will be carried on both The Cartoon Network and TBS, making it
  116. available to almost every viewer with cable or a satellite dish...
  117.  
  118. And need we say that a number of companies are already exploring the
  119. possibilities of bringing Jonny Quest to comics in conjunction with
  120. the new series?...
  121.  
  122. Hasbro plans to release its first Superman toys late this year, tying in
  123. with the Lois and Clark television series; by the time the Superman
  124. animated series debuts in 1996, Hasbro will have a full line of
  125. animation-inspired toys ready for release...
  126.  
  127. Negotiations are nearing completion to bring Miracleman back to the
  128. comic racks in '96.

  191. Fusion Studios Formed:

  193. 8/17/95 - Critically-acclaimed artist Joel Orbeta has announced the
  194. formation of Fusion Studios.
  195.  
  196. Orbeta stated that the new publisher is dedicated to "producing a new
  197. breed of comics that combines the best of manga and mainstream comic
  198. books.  Anime and manga are the cutting-edge of world pop culture, and
  199. US comics are ready & waiting for this blast of adrenalin."
  200.  
  201. Fusion Studios' first project will be 'Manga Zen' by Orbeta and Zen
  202. Intergalactic Ninja co-creator Steve Stern.  The same creative team will
  203. then produce the upcoming 'cyber-manga' title, SHYGIRL.
  204.  
  205. A Phillipino-American, Orbeta's work has been hailed by Capital City
  206. Distribution as "excellent". Vantage Magazine said, "We've never seen
  207. anything like it."
  208.  
  209. Orbeta said, "Fusion Studios has several additional projects, from an
  210. exciting roster of talents, which will be announced shortly.  Those
  211. interesed in more information should contact us directly at 516-823-0129."

  214. Marvel Comics/Heroes' World Experiencing Growing Pains:
  215.  
  216. 8/20/95 - Marvel has apologized for over-charging on their Canadian
  217. exchange rate prices.  Marvel has been charging roughly Canadian$1.41
  218. per US dollar, when the going rate is around $1.37.  Marvel/Heroes
  219. World will issue credit to retailers for the over-charge.
  220.  
  221. Additionally, a few retailers have reported over-shipment and over-
  222. billing occurances from Heroes World.

  225. Exiles to Crossover with X-Men:
  226.  
  227. 8/17/95 - Marvelibu's new Exiles Ultraverse title will cross over with
  228. Marvel Universe's own X-Men comics sometime in the near future.  The
  229. event will follow up the Black September storyline in which Juggernaut,
  230. the Proffessor X's brother, crosses over into the Ultraverse with a
  231. band of exiled mutants from the Marvel Mutantverse.
  232.  
  233. Another X-Men crossover scheduled is the X-Men/WildCATs crossover,
  234. coming soon, with art from Jim Lee.
  235.  
  236. [Editor's Note: Just recently noticed an ad in ClanDestine #12 from
  237. Marvel (the final issue as noted in the next news brief) for an
  238. Exiles vs. X-Men #0 from American Entertainment, similar to their
  239. recent Prime/Hulk and Wolverine/Night Man offers. Whether this is
  240. the crossover mentioned or simply a "prelude" remains to be seen...]

  242. ClanDestine Cancelled:
  243.  
  244. 8/17/95 - The critically acclaimed superhero team title ClanDestine
  245. will be cancelled as of issue #12.  The comic was originally solicited
  246. under the Marvel UK banner, and later released as a regular Marvel
  247. comic after the UK imprint was jettisonned.

  250. Calabrese Interviewed in Direct:
  251.  
  252. 8/25/95 - Jerry Calabrese, president of the Marvel Entertainment Group,
  253. was recently featured in the July issue of Direct, a direct-mail industry
  254. magazine.  He told writer Diane Cyr that he doesn't read comics and said
  255. his goal is to turn Marvel into a "Franklin Mint for Kids" by amassing
  256. enough information about Marvel customers to generate an invaluable
  257. consumer database.  Cyr said that throughout the entire interview,
  258. Calabrese never used the word "Super-hero", while he used the word
  259. "equity" quite frequently.
  260.  
  261. During Calabrese's four-year-thus-far direction, Marvel's licensing
  262. and promotional income has risen from $7 million to about $40 million.
  263. Not only do promotional tie-ins with fast-food joints, video games and
  264. cereals increase Marvel's revenue, the mail-in offers also collect names,
  265. ages and addresses for Marvel's growing database.

  267. Calabrese's favorite comic book character is the Punisher.

  271. Virtual Comics Featured in CBG:
  272.  
  273. 8/25/95 - This week's issue of the Comic Buyer's Guide featured Byron
  274. Preiss Multimedia Company's upcoming comic venture, Virtual Comics.
  275.  
  276. Danny Fingeroth, former editor of the Spider-Man group of titles for
  277. Marvel Comics, will head Virtual Comics, which will feature new
  278. super-heroes developed for the digital medium by a number of comics
  279. creators.
  280.  
  281. Among the first titles to appear from Virtual Comics will be "They Call
  282. Me...The Skul", written by Fingeroth and pencilled by Ron Lim.  The
  283. title will feature a superhero accused of murder who is sent to
  284. "America's most terrifying prison".
  285.  
  286. Also from Virtual Comics will come The 6, written by former X-Men
  287. scribe Fabian Nicieza with art and design by Greg Luzniak.  It will be
  288. about a superhero team whose origins are linked with a kidnapped super-
  289. hero.
  290.  
  291. The Suit, written by Dan Chichester and Greg Write, will be designed by
  292. Shawn McManus.  The Suit will be about a superhero whose armor holds
  293. a hundred secrets.
  294.  
  295. Virtual Comics will also offer a series of comics based on the Stan
  296. Lee's Riftworld series of novels.  Lee will write the digital comics
  297. himself and Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) will design them.
  298.  
  299. Virtual Comics will begin at the end of August on an on-line service.
  300.  
  301.  
  302. DC Comics Continues Hitchhiker Trilogy:
  303.  
  304. 8/25/95 - DC Comics will publish a three-issue miniseries of comics
  305. in 1996 based on the third book in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide To
  306. The Galaxy "Trilogy" (which in fact consists of 5 books).  Christopher
  307. Schenck will provide the breakdowns, with Neil Vokes on pencils and John
  308. Nyberg inking.
  309.  
  310. Byron Preiss Visual Publications, Inc. will also adapt the late Roger
  311. Zelazny's best-selling Chronicles of Amber books in 1996, to be published
  312. by DC Comics. Nine Princes in Amber will be adapted as a trilogy of
  313. painted graphic novels.  The first issue will be painted by Lou Harrison,
  314. the second by Bryn Barnard and the third by Tom Roberts.
  315.  
  316. William Gibson's cyberpunk novel Neuromancer will also be adapted in '96
  317. by Byron Preiss Visual Publications, inc in a trilogy of graphic novels.

  320. Gentlemen's Quarterly Serializes Miller/Bisley Comic:
  321.  
  322. 8/25/95 - The British edition of GQ has been serializing Frank Miller
  323. and Simon Bisley's science-fiction comic serial "Bad Boy", about an
  324. amnesiac boy who awakens in a nightmarish future.  The comic has been
  325. appearing in two-page installments for a few issues now, but will not
  326. make its way to the American edition of the men's magazine until it has
  327. finished its run in the British GQ.  The 24-page serial will arrive in
  328. the states in June of 1998.

  331. Voices For Children to Hold Art Auction:
  332.  
  333. 8/16/95 - Voices for Children will be holding another Comics Art
  334. Auction at the Concourse Center in San Francisco on September 1-4.
  335. The auction will be held at the Sports and Comics Collectors
  336. Convention, sponsored by B&G Promotions, Inc.  Publishers & comics
  337. pros wishing to make a donation of comic arts, scripts and comics
  338. for the auction can send e-mail to Dale Colvin at his e-mail address

  342. Peter Kupper Interviewed on National Radio:
  343.  
  344. 8/16/95 - Peter Kupper, creator of ComicsTrips, was interviewed on
  345. the National Public Radio show Fresh Air, promoting his two new comics,
  346. Stripped (an autobiography) and a Kafka anthology.
  347.  
  348. The artist's goal is for his work to be sold in bookstores. Therefore,
  349. he's doing hardbacks. He says most people don't like going into comic
  350. stores.  "They are very scary places", he said, "with costumed muscle-
  351. men leaping out at you from every side. It's hard to find something
  352. there that's not aimed at 15-year-old boys".
  353.  
  354. He's not entirely happy with bookstores either. Most of them have
  355. sections for "graphic novels", thus his work will likely be filed
  356. there next to Batman, "very incongruous", he says.  He said that
  357. his Kafka adaptations should go on the shelf with the other Kafka
  358. books, and Stripped should be in the autobiography section, not
  359. in art or humor.

  364. * First of all, I'm sorry this issue's so short and review-less...
  365. Soccer pre-season just started up for me, as well as racing to beat
  366. the deadline for the CBN APA (see the last bullet-misc entry), so I
  367. have had less and less time to work on important stuff like BBS'ing. :)
  368.  
  369. * A hearty *THBBBTTT!!!* right back to you, Nate! :)
  370.  
  371. * Computer Comics... The concept is very intriguing.  I would tend to
  372. think that a comic book published on the World Wide Web could be very
  373. profitable with the right advertisers and the right strategy.  Because
  374. of the Internet's slow speed, it may seem unrealistic, but if loaded
  375. one panel/word ballon at a time, I'm thinking that even the slowness
  376. of the web could enhance the online comic reading experience.  I am
  377. interested in how Virtual Comics pulls off this online publishing
  378. venture.
  379.  
  380. * A few people have expressed their confusion concerning how an online
  381. magazine could possibly be profitable (see: Heroes World...).  In fact,
  382. publishing online may be even _more_ profitable, in the near future. With
  383. online accounts & passwords integrated, subscription charges _are_
  384. feasable, though most of the online publications would be free of
  385. charge.
  386.  
  387. So how would they make money?  First off, _advertising_. If there are
  388. enough people accessing their publication, big companies will pay big
  389. bucks to advertise their comics in the e-mag.  An on the World Wide Web,
  390. there is the added possibility of including a _link_ which the user
  391. can follow to get even more information about the advertiser! Such
  392. convenience could be very attractive to advertisers.
  393.  
  394. Also, the publisher doesn't have to foot the large bills that paper-
  395. production and distribution generates. That saves big bucks that could
  396. be better spent on hiring writers & artists.
  397.  
  398. Altogether, the profit margin is widened considerably.
  399.  
  400. * It's becoming somewhat fashionable to include a homosexual character
  401. in recent comics.  Being heterosexual myself, I neither endorse nor
  402. condemn homosexuality, though I wouldn't be able to judge whether the
  403. characters are being treated "realistically". I'd be interested in
  404. hearing what the homosexual community would have to say about gay
  405. superheroes.  Does the seeming onslaught of homosexual characters in
  406. comics give readers the right idea about realistic gay-straight ratios?
  407. How do heterosexuals feel about homosexual role models? 
  408.  
  409. * How many exclaimation points can you find in an issue of Fantastic
  410. Four? How about WildCATs? Stray Bullets? Starman? Strangers in Paradise?
  411. X-Men? How do they affect the feel of the book?  Perhaps an "!-Index"
  412. should in integrated into my reviews?  How many question marks are in
  413. this paragraph? :)

  415. * Celtics got rid of Wilkins! Yahoo! Now they can afford a _real_
  416. basketball player... >;)
  417.  
  418. * Have you all reserved copies of Sam & Max, Hilly Rose and Explorers
  419. at your local comic shop?

  490.         I'd like to respond to CBEM editor Ryan Brewster's opinion column
  491.  from last week's E-Mag. I think Ryan is one of the neater guys on CBN. I
  492.  like his fanfic, he's a wonderful conference host, and he did a WONDERFUL
  493.  job editing his first issue of CBEM.
  494.         But, there's still that opinion column. The "Bad Girls aren't such a
  495.  bad thing" one. Everyone remember that? I've looked at a few Bad Girl books
  496.  (non concurrent issues of Lady Death and Vampirella), and I believe I can
  497.  safely rebuttle.

  503.         There, now that I've gotten that out of my system (and alienated
  504.  half the mag's readership in one way or another), I just wanted to let you
  505.  know that I just got through the first two issues of Dark Horse's STAR
  506.  WARS: X-WING- ROUGE SQUADRON, and I'm happy again.
  507.         Not happy like looking back at the first time I ever saw Star Wars
  508.  (I was pulled out of kindergarden class to go to the dentist, and
  509.  afterwards, my dad took me to see Star Wars). More like happy that some of
  510.  the old familiar is back.
  511.         Dark Horse's original Star Wars attempts have never impressed me too
  512.  much. I admit I've continued to buy them to show support to Star Wars in
  513.  general, and in hopes that a gem will come along. Plus there are two other
  514.  Star Wars fans in the house who will hang me out to dry if I suddenly cut
  515.  off their feed after 3 or 4 years.
  516.         DARK EMPIRE, their first attempt was well appreciated at the time,
  517.  because there was little else out there. It was great to see the old gang
  518.  again, with nothing to compare it to, it shined brightly. (Even if I think
  519.  they badly mishandled Boba Fett)
  520.         DROIDS came along, and even though C3PO is one of my favorites from
  521.  the series, really underwhelmed me. Sure it's lighthearted and fun, but
  522.  it's just too goofy for my tastes. I think I've been jaded by all those
  523.  grim and gritty comics.
  524.         DARK EMPIRE II came along with really REALLY nice covers, and drek
  525.  on the inside. It made the first DE look grand. The story dragged forever,
  526.  did nothing interesting, and failed to captivate my interest. The art
  527.  was too funky as well.
  528.         TALES OF THE JEDI's first mini series was fresh and exciting,
  529.  introducing us to some dynamic new characters. However, in later mini
  530.  series, those characters lost their freshness, and I started missing the
  531.  characters we've all come to know and love.
  532.         Through it all, only CLASSIC STAR WARS really held my interest.
  533.  Maybe it was the nostalgia, or the special format, or the fact that I
  534.  remembered parts of some of the stories from my youth. Sadly, it came
  535.  to an end all too soon, (the second series had only a measley nine
  536.  issues), leaving me alone once again.
  537.         Until ROUGE SQUADRON came along; the (slightly overpriced)
  538.  adventures of the only recurring minor Star Wars character, Wedge
  539.  Antillies. I like Wedge (who dosen't), but had little hope for this series.
  540.  And, sadly, there isn't much character development in those first few
  541.  issues (of Wedge or his squadron).
  542.         But, the mood is there. Again we get to thrill to the exploits of a
  543.  lowly band of rebels on a crusade against that nasty old empire. Again we
  544.  get to meet new characters, and see how the struggle against the empire
  545.  affects them. Again we get to see exotic locations, nasty beasts, and
  546.  exciting dogfights. And all is well. For now.
  547.         ToTJ had a good start, too. It quickly fell apart. With any luck,
  548.  Dark Horse will take extra care with this title, and keep us all
  549.  interested. For this comic to succeed, they need to breathe more life into
  550.  the characters (even Wedge), and help us care enough about them to stay
  551.  tuned each month (at $3 an issue). At the same time, they need to keep the
  552.  background fresh, with a range of exciting missions and locales. Seems like
  553.  a lot, but we comic fans are a fickle and demanding bunch. We want it all,
  554.  and if we don't get it from you, we're gonna look somewhere else.
  555.         To sum up, if you want nonstop action and adventure in your life,
  556.  go  become a secret agent. But, if you'd like to stay home, and feel some
  557.  of that sense of nostalgia that you received from the original movies,
  558.  ROUGE SQUADRON might be the book for you. The book for you might also be
  559.  CLASSIC STAR WARS, and while both are spectacular reads, you won't have to
  560.  dig through back issue bins to find the former...
  561.

  1040. You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads
  1041. that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However,
  1042. many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS
  1043. echo-mail system....
  1044.  
  1045. Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and
  1046. many of them are free!  Chances are, if you have a modem you have
  1047. the accompanying communications software.  Using the Terminal Emulation
  1048. software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many
  1049. systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most
  1050. of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network...
  1051. there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as
  1052. well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention
  1053. sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!)
  1054. conversation. 
  1055.  
  1056. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most
  1057. if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download
  1058. a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called
  1059. an offline mail reader.  You can read & write messages at your leisure,
  1060. and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your
  1061. local BBS.  There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every
  1062. type of computer system.  They all give you a better explaination in
  1063. their documentation than I can.   These programs are available all over
  1064. the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's.
  1065.  
  1066. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading
  1067. replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the
  1068. average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is
  1069. LESS THAN 75"!  See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial
  1070. information services available! :)
  1071.  
  1072. So what else can you find on free BBS systems?  Theres plenty of files
  1073. for specific types of computers.  Some systems also offer other types
  1074. of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes
  1075. like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc.  And, let's not forget
  1076. online games.  Join into the many different multiplayer games, each
  1077. system sports different challenges.  There's nothing like becoming
  1078. the most powerful being in a online adventure!
  1079.  
  1080. And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to
  1081. ALL, and introduce yourself to us!  You're guaranteed to get plenty of
  1082. replies and all the help you need to join in the fun!
