2.0 Installation Notes for OS/2
Note: Attempting to execute the mach64 INSTALL program with a Com 4
device installed, will cause the system to hang. Remove any
device that uses the base I/O 2E8, before running INSTALL.
1) Insert disk #1 and run INSTALL from within a full screen DOS session
(under OS/2) and check the "Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that you
have selected an appropriate monitor type:
a) OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be configured for the IBM
default 60Hz vertical refresh rate.
b) You must configure the card for all resolutions that your monitor
can support in order to have them functioning correctly under OS/2.
Only those resolutions that you have configured will display
correctly.
2) Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the INSTALL may not work
if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
3) From the INSTALL Main Menu, select Drivers Installation and pick IBM
OS/2. Then follow the instructions given on the screen.
Note: If PM Desktop does not reappear after exiting from the full screen
DOS session, pressing <Enter> will bring you back to full screen.
If this occurs, you must reboot to get back to the PM Desktop.
4) When the mach64 driver is installed the SETVGA command will request the
mach64 drivers diskette to be inserted in to default installation drive.
SETVGA will not proceed without this diskette. Use the following
procedure to create the required mach64 diskette:
a) Boot DOS, or enter a full screen DOS session.
b) Insert a blank disk into drive A: (the bootable floppy drive)
c) Change directory to the directory created by the installation of
the mach64 OS2 drivers (default c:\MACH_OS2)
d) The mach64 disk must have a volume label of MACH64OS2. To create this
label, at the C:\MACH_OS2 (default) directory type:
LABEL A:
You will then see at prompt stating "Volume label (11 characters,
enter for none)?", please type:
MACH64OS2
e) Copy the contents of the MACH_OS2 directory onto the floppy disk.
5) Run DSPINSTL from within an OS/2 window.
6) When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
and click OK to bring up a list of choices. You should see an option for
ATI mach64.
7) Select 'ATI Technologies mach64' from the list and click OK. Ignore the
error message pop-up which says "The installed adapter does not support
the selected display driver. Do you wish to continue?" and click OK.
8) When the source directory panel appears, select 'Change' and enter:
C:\MACH_OS2 (replace c: with your boot drive letter if you don't use c)
Click 'Set' and then 'Install'. After the files are copied, exit the OS/2
window or full screen session. Shut down and restart your system.
9) The PM driver will first come up in 640x480, 256 colors mode. Use the
following steps to change the screen resolutions or number of colors:
a) Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
b) Open 'System Setup' icon.
c) Open 'System' icon.
b) Select the 'Screen' tab.
e) Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
f) Double click on the system menu icon or select close from the system
menu to close the window.
g) Shut down and restart your system.
2.1 Uninstalling the OS/2 drivers
1. Open an OS/2 window or OS/2 Full Screen icon and type:
DSPINSTL <enter>.
2. Select Primary Display and click OK to bring up a list of choices. Select
"Video Graphics Array (VGA) from the list.
3. When the source directory panel appears, insert the OS/2 /Display Driver
diskette. Select the drive and path name where the VGA driver resides
(typically A: or B:), choose Set and then choose Install.
4. After the install is complete, shut down and restart your system.
Note: After completing step 4, OS/2 is using VGA for a display. If you
wish to remove the mach64 files from you hard drive continue on.
5. Restart OS/2 and open a full screen DOS session.
6. Insert the mach64 disk #1 in the appropriate drive. Change directories
to the floppy drive and type: INSTALL <enter>.
7. Select Driver Installation from the Main Menu.
8. Select IBM OS/2 from the list of applications.
9 Select UNINSTALL OS/2 Drivers, and follow the instructions on the
screen.

3.0 Known Problems
OS/2 DOS Windows
There are currently several problems with DOS windows. These usually
show up when you switch from a windowed command window. Use of DOS
windows can cause the system to hang when restoring from minimized
mode.
PageMaker
In PageMaker, dragging lines made by the pointer remain on the canvas.
The lines appears as lot of smaller dash lined boxes inside the outer
box.
Open a new file and type several lines of characters (selecting "A"
from the tool box). Move the block around, using the black arrow
pointer from the toolbox. One will notice that sometimes part of the
block disappears and sometimes the entire block disappears. When the
block does disappear, click on the area where it was last seen and
then it re-appears.
Task Switching DOS Graphics
Task switching between DOS graphics and the Presentation Manager,
will result in the DOS session, becoming distorted.
The distorted DOS display may appear with a ghosted image of the
Presentation Manager. The DOS screen may be black or have random trash.
This problem can be seen with DOS games using VESA modes and other graphics
based applications.
Refreshing the DOS session screen will correct the problem.
VPIC
Exiting VPIC, when used in a DOS window, may cause the display to appears
as though the graphics mode has been switch to CGA or EGA.
Windows Paintbrush
Floodfills do not work. Nothing happens when this option is chosen.
Child Window Class
One child window class is not redrawn properly when it receives a left
mouse button click message.
Child Control Windows
A strange arrow-type bitmap appears to the left of child control
windows (pushbuttons, static windows, checkboxes). Sometimes, this
arrow is displayed at the time of window creation and the rest of the
time it appears when the left mouse button is clicked. Clicking on
any control window seems to make this arrow appear beside all control
windows.
Text
ITC AvantGarde, ITC Bookman, Times fonts:
The cursor is not repositioned correctly after a character is entered.
For characters such as 'r', 't' and 'f', the cursor is repositioned in
the middle of the character. For characters such as 'p' and 'm', the
cursor is positioned too far to the right (by about half the width of
the character). Certain character combinations such as 'iy, 'lm', 'jd'
and 'jf' cause the second character to overlap the first.
Helvetica font:
Certain character combinations such as 'iy', 'lm', 'jd' and 'jf' cause
the second character to overlap the first.
Excel
Horizontal lines are seen that are not supposed to be there.
Jigsaw
Load up a file in Jigsaw. The colors are wrong, the file is partially
distorted on the screen, and trying to quit Jigsaw doesn't
always allow you to quit and it distorts the OS/2 system.
Jigsaw doesn't load files properly, only partial files are loaded. It
does not scramble properly. One sees the rectangular scrambled pieces
instead of puzzle scrambled pieces. The black background color of the
OS2LOGO.bmp file is royal blue. Once a file is loaded, one cannot
open another file, because an error message constantly appears saying
that OS/2 can not open this file. One has to exit out of Jigsaw to
open another BMP file.
24 bpp mode
Characters are corrupted in 24bpp mode.
Icons created at 256 colors may not display correctly.
Full screen Windows
On a Pentium PCI, switching back and forth from full screen Windows to
OS/2 PM window will cause mouse to be lost in the full screen Windows.
When Win-OS/2 full screen is changed to a window and back again sometimes the
screen becomes distorted. Switching again can return the screen to normal.
Chess
The white players are transparent boxes. If you run Chess OS/2 Computer
vs Computer, the white team chess pieces are not distinguishable, but
one can see something moving around as a square piece where the chess
pieces are moving
Changing Refresh Rates
When changing refresh rates of 640x480 resolution using the mach64
installation diskettes from a DOS full screen window, the computer freezes
up. This is a design limitation. IBM OS/2 must use 60 Hz VGA frequency
since it sets the registers directly. This is a limitation of OS/2 and
only applies to the 640x480 resolution. Other resolutions may be configured
at any vertical refresh rate.
Win OS/2 sessions
WINOS2 sessions, FULL SCREEN or SEAMLESS may not start and display an error
message, " PROGRAM MANAGER SYS 3170: A program in this session encountered a
problem and cannot continue."
Occasionally when the mach64 OS2 INSTALL.CMD is run the order of the lines
in the CONFIG.SYS file gets changed.
WHEN the device= VMACH64.SYS line precedes the VVGA.SYS line in config.sys
the following problem will occur.
To correct the problem edit the OS/2 config.sys file and ensure that the
DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VVGA.SYS line comes before DEVICE=C:\OS2\MDOS\VMACH64.SYS
Tasking switching while loading WIN-OS/2 Full Screen generates the following
error message: "The ATI FlexDesk Windows Driver requires an ATI 88800 based
video board or product. ATI display driver failure #82-0. Press any key to
return to DOS."
Run seamless Win OS/2 sessions with the separate sessions box not selected.
Configuring a Win OS/2 session for separate session may cause the folllowing
problems:
- Only one Win Os/2 session will be active at a time.
- Active Win OS/2 apps will be closed if a Win OS/2 app, configured for
separate session, is opened.
Fonts may become corrupted if seamless Windows are moved about the desktop.
Video Playback
Blank or Garbled video playback, particularly with the UltiMotion clips.
64K Color modes: UltiMotion clips will come up as mostly blue when
running 800x600, 65K colour or 1024x768, 65K color modes. This is a
technical problem with the 2.1 release of OS/2 UltiMedia; it is unable
to use more than 1MB of video memory.
The current 2.11 release of OS/2 Ultimotion, does not experience this
problem.
Cursor position
The cursor is off-set, to the left, by one character from the actual
insertion point. If you type slowly, the cursor will appear under the
previously typed letter.
Mach64 Diagnostics
Due to the nature of mach64 diagnostics, it can not be run under OS/2. The
diagnostic program modifies hardware settings, which may cause the system
to lock.
To run the diagnostics, boot your system for a DOS bootable diskette.
Insert disk 1 of the mach64 disks and type M64DIAG.
Uninstall
If you uninstall the mach64 drivers and go back to the vga drivers,
when you switch between the PM Desktop and a DOS Window you can
hang the system.
