1.0 Before installing Windows NT Workstation V4.0
---------------------------------------------------
1.1. How to get the updated software from IBM
---------------------------------------------
Before you install Windows NT Workstation on your ThinkPad, you may
need to get some updated software from IBM or Microsoft.
IBM PC Company is providing the updated software through several
channels as follows. It is suggested you get the latest software
from those channels so that you can set up Windows NT on your
ThinkPad systems with the information described in this document.
<WWW server on Internet>

If you cannot get the updated software from either one, please
contact your IBM representative, or contact IBM HelpCenter (1-800-
772-2227 in the US) for more information.
1.2. Backing up your software and data
--------------------------------------
IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system
to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems,
device drivers and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that
you back up all data files to disk before installing Windows NT
Workstation.
1.3. Removing preinstalled software
-----------------------------------
<Removing OS/2 Warp>
If you purchase a SelectaSystem model and are using OS/2 Warp
version 3, Windows NT cannot be installed with OS/2 Warp dual boot
configuration in the SelectaSystem. Therefore, if you wish to
install Windows NT, OS/2 Warp should be removed from your system
along with all the preinstalled OS/2 applications.
If you wish to continue using OS/2 Warp with Windows NT, you need
to use OS/2 Warp Boot Manager. For more information, refer to
Windows NT Installation Guide.
1.4 Before installing Windows NT Workstation
----------------------------------------------
Before you install Windows NT Workstation, it is recommended that
you review the information which is available in the Windows NT
installation guide. You can install Windows NT Workstation using
SCSI CD-ROM in all IBM Docking Station or the built in CD-ROM such as
in ThinkPad 755CD, 760CD, 760ED and 365XD.
If your system does not support IBM docking connection or the internal CD-ROM
drive is not available, there is an alternative way to install the software.
1. If your CD-ROM drive can be connected under DOS environment, Windows NT
installation can be done under DOS.
- Insert the Windows NT workstation compact disc in the CD-ROM drive, and
on the DOS command prompt, change the CDdrive:\I386 directory. For example,
if your CD-ROM drive is recognized as drive D:, change to the D:\I386
- At the DOS command prompt, type
D:\I386>winnt
then follow the instruction on the screen to start Windows NT installation.
2. You can install Windows NT workstation on multiple computers by first
copying the Windows NT Workstation master source files to a shared drive on
a network computer. After connecting your system to network such as with
DOS LAN requester, installation can be done at DOS command prompt copying
files from your network server.

The first step in this section is to install the device driver ThinkPad
PIIX IDE.
Once the driver is successfully installed, the diskette drive in the UltraBay
needs to be enabled. Up to this point the device residing in the ThinkPad's
UltraBay is a CD-ROM used during the installation of Windows NT. The diskette
drive is located in the FDD External Attachment Kit connected to the back of
the ThinkPad. Therefore, NT only recognize the external diskette drive as the
only and primary diskette drive in the system.
To enable the internal diskette drive port (in the UltraBay) the Utility
Diskette provides the command, TPFDD.EXE. This command is used at a C: prompt
with two parameters:
Command Result
------- -------
TPFDD I (I = Internal)
Enables the diskette drive in the UltraBay as
the primary diskette drive in the system.
If two diskette drives are installed, one in the
UltraBay and one in the FDD External Attachment
Kit, then the UltraBay's diskette drive will be
A: drive and the external diskette drive will
become the B: drive.
TPFDD E (E = External)
Disable the diskette drive as the primary diskette
drive in the UltraBay.
TPSWAP.EXE is the another command available for NT 4.0. This command works
together with the previous command, TPFDD. Once the diskette drive in the
UltraBay is enabled, "warm swapping" may be possible by executing the command
TPSWAP.
TPSWAP E (E = Enable)
Enables "warm swap" support which means UltraBay
devices can be exchanged while the system is in
suspend mode. When the keyboard is lifted the ThinkPad
system enters suspend mode automatically.
For example, during the suspend mode you may exchange
a CD-ROM for a diskette drive or vice versa without
having to reboot the system. This is called "warm"
swapping.
TPSWAP D (D = Disable)
Disables "warm swapping".
Installing the ThinkPad PIIX IDE driver
---------------------------------------
1. Start Windows NT 4.0 on your computer.
2. Close any active applications by double clicking on the upper left hand
corner of the window.
3. Select "Control Panel", then select "SCSI Adapters"

command is required only once as long as you keep using the diskette
drive or CD-ROM in the UltraBay. To disable the internal diskette drive
bring it to its default setting, execute the command "TPFDD E".
11. Type "TPSWAP E" from the MS-DOS command prompt.
This enables the warm swap feature. If you want to disable this feature,
type "TPSWAP D".
12. Type "Exit" to close the MS-DOS windows
13. Close the Control Panel by double clicking on the upper left corner
and retrieve the diskette from the A drive.

Using Control Panel to add the Mwave Modem
------------------------------------------
After installing the Mwave drivers and MIDI samples, you will need to tell
Windows NT about your Mwave modem. Windows NT does not provide a way
for the Mwave installation program to do this for you automatically,
so you must use the Windows NT Control Panel to manually configure
the communication port and add the modem.
Step 1 is to configure the communication port.
Once you've completed the first step, the Mwave Modem will then be
recognized by Windows NT. You can then begin using communication
applications that don't require Unimodem support.
Use the ThinkPad Setup utility (for ThinkPad 755 computers) or
ThinkPad Features program (for ThinkPad 760 computers) to select a COM
port for your modem. Then use the Windows NT Control Panel to define
the same port.
If you are using a ThinkPad 755, follow these steps. Then move on to
the COM port verification procedure.
Step1: Configure ThinkPad COM port:
-----------------------------------
1. From the Windows NT Start menu,
choose Programs -> ThinkPad Setup -> DSP.
2. Choose one of the COM ports shown in the Telephony Function box.
A message appears if the COM port is already in use.
3. Choose the Save button.
If you are using a ThinkPad 760, follow these steps. Then move on to
the COM port verification procedure.

1. From the Windows NT Start menu, choose Settings -> Control Panel.
Then double-click the Ports icon.
2. Verify that the list of COM ports includes the COM port that you
chose in your ThinkPad setup. If not, choose the Add button. If
the port is listed, double-click it.
3. On the Advanced Settings dialog box, choose settings as shown in
the following table:
BASE I/O
COM PORT PORT ADDRESS IRQ
COM1 03F8 4
COM2 02F8 3
COM3 03E8 4
COM4 02E8 3
You must also select the FIFO Enabled checkbox.
Notes:
If you use PCMCIA modem cards together with Mwave modem, Mwave modem
must be configured as COM2. Assign COM1 for PCMCIA modem card if you
need the PCMCIA modem card concurrently used.
4. Choose the OK button.
If you have made any changes, you must shut down and restart the com-
puter in order for the changes to take effect.
Step 2 is to use the Control Panel to add the modem. This will
allow you to use communication applications that use
the Unimodem facility of Windows NT, such as HyperTerminal and Dial-Up
Networking.
Step2: Add Mwave modem for communication applications:
------------------------------------------------------
a. From the Windows NT Start menu, choose Settings -> Control Panel.
b. Double-click the Modems icon.
c. If you don't already have a modem installed, you will immediately
see the "Install New Modem" dialog. If you already have a modem
installed, select the "Add..." button to open the "Install New Modem"
dialog.
d. Select the "Next" button. Windows NT will start searching for the
modem.
e. If successful, Windows NT will report that it has found a modem of
type "IBM ThinkPad 28.8 Mwave Data Fax." If Windows NT fails to
detect a modem, verify that your communication port was configured
correctly in step 1, and then retry step 2. Remember that the
changes you make using the "Ports" applet of Control Panel will not
take effect until you restart Windows NT.
f. Select the "Next" button and follow the remaining instructions
provided by Control Panel.
After completing step 2, you should be able to use your Mwave modem
with all modem communication applications supported by Windows NT 4.0.
2.1.8.2 Tips for Mwave/DSP Feature program
--------------------------------------------
Some useful hints/limitations are fully documented in README.TXT of
Windows NT Mwave install disk1. Read this document for the details.
o Currently, the following features are not provided:
- Speaker phone/answering machine
- SoundBlaster game support
- Class-1 FAX
o Suspending during MIDI/WAVE play may not recover properly after
the system is resumed. Discontinue MIDI/WAVE play prior to entering
Suspend Mode.
o Setting the music option playing with Pinball Game causes the game
to play slowly. Avoid setting this option.
o Intermittent FAX receive problem with WinFax Pro 4.0
Infrequently (perhaps 1 in ten attempts), faxes incoming to a suspended
ThinkPad, are not received correctly. Usually the problem will clear
itself and if the fax is resent, it will be received correctly.
If the application appears to hang with the WinFax Pro Status screen
displayed, click CANCEL to reset the application.
o Read FAQs about the each specific modem application/FAX application/
multimedia applications for more details. This information is
documented in README.TXT in Windows NT Mwave Install Disk 1.
2.1.9 Using ThinkPad Infrared Features on Windows NT 4.0
--------------------------------------------------------
Infrared feature on Windows NT supports point-to-point IR communication
with other ThinkPad computers or systems equipped with an infrared port.
Windows NT infrared feature supports the Generic (IrDA 1.0) mode up to
115000 BPS. This mode is used when communicating with other IBM ThinkPad
computers or the other vendor's notebook systems.
As the typical serial IR applications, Windows NT Dial-Up Networking connecting
the two computers via serial IR or TranXit for Windows NT from Puma Technology
are available.
2.1.9.1 Installing Infrared Device Driver

failed. Check Windows NT Event Viewer if IR driver load is failed.
To enable infrared port for COM1 on your computer,
1. Run ThinkPad Feature Program and enable IR device as COM1
2. Restart your computer
Changing the infrared COM port number
-------------------------------------
When you need to use IR port other than the default value (COM1) such as
to change to COM2, then you need to manually change the configuration
parameter of Windows NT registry as follows:
Registry key area:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Serial\Parameters\InfraRedPort
For COM2 setting:
DisablePort: 1
DosDevices : COM2
Interrupt : 3
PortAddress: 2f8
If you change to COM1 again, set the following value.
For COM1 setting:
DisablePort: 1
DosDevices : COM1
Interrupt : 4
PortAddress: 3f8
When you modify the registry key/value, restart the computer.
2.1.8.2 Configure the Infrared Port for Dial-Up Networking

server using the infrared port if your RAS server is also configured for
using infrared device.
-------------------------------------------
3.0. Known limitations with Windows NT 4.0
-------------------------------------------
o Currently, the following functions are not provided on Windows NT 4.0
- IBM MPEG-II (ThinkPad 760CD/760ED), enhanced video function
such as video overlay/video capture features are not supported.
o Following are the special consideration required on Windows NT 4.0
- When you use your ThinkPad with the battery mode, it is recommended to
avoid using with the power mode setting of "Automatic". Power mode
setting of "Automatic" enables the processor (CPU) clock control automatic
but Windows NT is not designed to support the dynamic CPU clock control.
When the system is used with the battery mode, set the power mode setting
either to "High Performance" or "Customized" to avoid some potential
problems.
- Hibernation function is supported with the following limitations.
If Windows NT system partition is created with NTFS, hibernation is not
supported. Another limitation is if the system is booted using the
hibernation file, the PCMCIA slot is not powered on. Shutdown and restart
Windows NT to use the PCMCIA card.
- When using audio feature on ThinkPad 365X/560 series, I/O address
conflict may occur if Token Ring adapter card is used together.
Change the base I/O address of either the Token Ring card (A20h) or
the default audio device base I/O address (220h) using the ThinkPad
Feature Program.
- When ISA adapter card, such as network adapter card, is used with IBM
docking unit, disable unused internal devices such as Mwave modem, IR
to assign the IRQ for your specific ISA card. On ThinkPad
760 family, the default configuration for internal device occupies many
IRQs that constrains allocation for the ISA cards in the docking unit.
You are recommended to assign IRQ =7 for your ISA card if most of the
internal devices must be used together, specifically used with IBM Dock-II
environment.
- The number of PCMCIA devices is limited. Supported PCMCIA devices
are listed on the Microsoft Windows NT Hardware Compatibility List.
To use a PCMCIA card, it must be inserted in the PCMCIA slot before
Windows NT is started. Inserting or removing the card after Windows NT
is started is not supported. Only cold insertion for PCMCIA cards is
activated.
- On all ThinkPad 760E series (760E/ED/EL/ELD), IRQ 15 can not be allocated
for PCMCIA card because this IRQ is reserved for the internal use.
Assign the different IRQ number for any PCMCIA card.
- On ThinkPad 755CD/CDV, PCMCIA ATA storage cards are not recognized because
the internal CD-ROM is used as the secondary IDE which conflicts with the
resource allocated for PCMCIA IDE under Windows NT.
- When you use a PCMCIA Hard Disk Card on ThinkPad 760CD/760LD, it needs
to disable the CD-ROM/Second HDD in the UltraBay.
- On ThinkPad 760E/ED/ELD/EL, PCMCIA ATA cards will not work if ATA card
IRQ is set to IRQ=15.
- When Adaptec SlimSCSI (APA-1460)PCMCIA card is used on ThinkPad 760E
family, IRQ 11 is allocated for SlimSCSI card. But IRQ 11 is also
reserved as the default interrupt number for the PCI devices.
To avoid the conflict of the interrupt number, change the default 1st IRQ
(IRQ11) to IRQ15 on PCI Device Setup menu/Docking Station Advanced Setup
menu using the ThinkPad Feature Program.
- When the Xircom Credit card adapter Ethernet+28.8K modem card is used in the
PCMCIA slot located in the IBM Docking station (IBM Dock-II/Selecta
Dock-I/II) or located in the port replicator, Ethernet communication
performance is significantly degraded. Use the PCMCIA slot located in the
system unit side when this card is required.
- When the IBM PCMCIA Token Ring card is used together with ThinkPad 560, it
may cause the slow performance when file transfer is activated using
FTP GET command. In this case, avoid using the NT 4.0 standard Token
Ring Driver (IBM Token Ring(ISA/PCMCIA) Adapter) but install the
another Token Ring driver (Auto 16/4 Token Ring PC Card driver) which is
available as TRCC1.EXE in PCCo. NT Web support page.
When installing this driver, modify the PCMCIA Data Base Registry as
follows:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Pcmcia\DateBase\IBM\
TOKENRING
Driver:ibmtok --> change to "Driver:ibmtkpcm"
- Windows NT supports IBM Dock-I, IBM Dock-II,IBM SelectaDock Base model 1
and IBM SelectaDock I/II. However, hot/warm docking is not supported.
To use the device in the Docking station, you must only do cold docking
for the docking devices.
