  16.         ESS Technology is providing updated OS/2 drivers for the
  17.         AudioDrive ES688 chip in this Software Release.  These drivers
  18.         are complete updates to prior ESS releases for OS/2 Warp 3.0.

  22.         - installation notes

  24.         Please read this document completely before you upgrade your
  25.         system, and follow the instructions carefully.

  48.         The AudioDrive ES688 OS/2 Driver Software Release incorporates
  49.         new changes done to the previous release, Version 2.0.

  51.         Version 2.01 Changes
  52.  
  53.         The following changes have been incorporated:
  54.  
  55.         1. The OS/2 driver fixes the problem that I/O base addresses 230
  56.            and 250 were not allowed.
  57.  
  58.         2. The driver correctly resets the MIDI controllers after the
  59.            MIDI file is stopped.
  60.  
  61.         3. The driver now can play fast tempo MIDI files.
  62.  
  63.         4. The driver can play 8Khz wave files again.

  66.         New Features in Version 2.01
  67.  
  68.         APM support
  69.  
  70.         The OS/2 driver supports Advanced Power Management (APM).  It is
  71.         recommended that users stop audio applications before putting
  72.         the system into suspend mode.

  77.         Known Problems
  78.  
  79.         1. Opening too many MIDI files makes the OS/2 system unstable.
  80.            This problem is related to MMPM/2 and depends on system
  81.            resource.
  82.  
  83.         2. Tempo in MIDI files is not 100% accurate due to timing delay.
  84.  
  85.         3. Running MCI commands "seek wave to #" and then "play wave" to
  86.            a 16-bit wave file sometimes generates very loud static
  87.            noise.  Likewise using "record wave from #" to record a
  88.            16-bit wave file may generate wrong file.  It all depends on
  89.            the seek position.

  91.         4. There is a popping noise at the beginning of wave file play
  92.            when the PCM format has been changed.

  97.         Installation Notes
  98.  
  99.         To install the new drivers successfully the following steps must
  100.         be taken:
  101.  
  102.         1. Open an OS/2 Window and run the ESUNINST.EXE program on the
  103.            installation disk by typing "A:ESUNINST".  This program will
  104.            create a backup of CONFIG.SYS named CONFIG.ESS and remove
  105.            the audio device lines from CONFIG.SYS.  It also creates a
  106.            backup of MMPM2.INI named MMPM2.ESS and removes the audio
  107.            drivers information from MMPM2.INI.  In addition, it removes
  108.            any ESS driver information in COMPLIST.INI.
  109.  
  110.         2. Run the MINSTALL.EXE program on the installation disk by
  111.            typing "A:MINSTALL".  Select AudioDrive ES688 by clicking
  112.            the mouse on that item.  A checkmark means it is selected.
  113.            If WinOS2 is installed in the system, you can select ES688
  114.            WinOS2/Windows Audio support too.  If not, make sure that
  115.            item is not selected.  Click the Install button to start the
  116.            installation.  Once the drivers are installed, shutdown and
  117.            restart OS/2 for the new ES688 drivers to take effect.
