  1. [01] WHAT IS A DOMAIN NAME SYSTEM (DNS)?

  3.      Domain Name System (DNS) is the registration of a domain namespace
  4.      with a TOP-LEVEL (root) domain name servers on the internet.
  5.      
  6.      There seems to quite a misunderstanding among internet newbies regarding
  7.      what DNS is .. to make it clear, here is a short list of what DNS is 
  8.      and isn't.  
  9.  
  10.      A DNS record lists:
  11.  
  12.      * The IP addresses for the domain and hosts associated with the domain.
  13.      * The aliases associated with the domain.
  14.      * The mail exchanger servers responsible for the domain.
  15.    
  16.      A DNS record is NOT:
  17.  
  18.      * webservice
  19.      * mail service
  20.      * ftp, telnet, finger .. et cetera
  21.  
  22.      In short DNS basically is a DOCUMENT which states where services can
  23.      be found, but no services (other than the information) is provided.
