LIFE (v2.1) by Jeff Anderson REGISTRATION ($10.00)
LIFE-21 is a shareware version of J. H. Conway's game of Life.
Life is a simulation game which uses a harshly Spartan set of rules to
generate a lavish universe of unlimited possibilities.
The simulation in Life is played out (theoretically) on an infinite
two-dimensional grid where each square of the grid can either be
occupied by a "live" cell or be empty; a truly binary landscape.
Before fractals became the rage, the Life simulation was probably
implemented on every college mainframe in the United States, and a
number of limited-performance programs were written on personal com-
puters. Life Version 2.1, the program you have here, is the first
full-feature Life game to run on a personal computer.
Life Version 2.1 (LIFE-21) can create patterns using direct screen
editing and recall of previously saved patterns. The simulation runs
on a huge grid (64k x 64k), and the number of live cells is limited
only by the memory available. Simulation can be halted and patterns
edited or saved at any time. Thanks to clever code (and excellent
programming tools from Borland), the speed of LIFE-21 outstrips most
minicomputer Life games and compares well to some mainframe setups.
The shareware disk comes with a few of pattern files to get you start-
ed. If you purchase a licensed LIFE-21 disk, it will contain a lot
more patterns, as well as a pattern print utility and other goodies.
Shareware programs get copied and passed around among users and bulle-
tin boards. Because of this, the chance exists for unauthorized
changes in the software. JAYEL Systems uses a simple protection
scheme which prevents nonprofessional sabotage or implanting of
virus-type code. When a JAYEL Systems program is executed from within
its own directory area, it will test itself against an embedded
check-sum as soon as it is loaded - you can recognize the pause.
When a JAYEL Systems program displays its opening screen and runs
normally you are assured the program is "clean." If it tells you it's
been modified, then erase it and warn the person who shared it with
you. Don't risk your system to a contaminated program.
LIFE-21 is a shareware package, or "try before you buy" software. As
such, its success depends on fulfilling your expectations and not on
marketing or costly packaging. True shareware can show a profit at a
fraction of the cost of retail software. Read the distribution file
LIFE-21.DOC for details about buying a licensed copy.
