COMMENT:Worth it for the illustrations alone -- written by an artist. A fairly comprehensive history of Western occult traditions, starting from the ancient world; includes sections on Gnosticism, Alchemy, Witchcraft, Cabala, and the roots of modern occultism in the 18th century. The point of view is not critical, but sympathetic without necessarily believing. Excellent overview, with a good deal of detail about belief and practice.
