AUTHOR:David Marks
CATEGORY:psi
COMMENT:An updated edition of a classic critique of parapsychology. The bulk
COMMENT:of the book carries over from the first edition, examining psi based
COMMENT:on two prominent examples of the 70's: the Targ-Puthoff "remote
COMMENT:viewing" experiments, and Uri Geller. It explains the fatal flaws in
COMMENT:both in some detail. The new material is just as interesting,
COMMENT:however, as Marks also severely criticizes the Star Gate remote
COMMENT:viewing experiments which ran into the mid-90's, the ganzfeld
COMMENT:experiments, and some of the recent psychic claims made by Rupert
COMMENT:Sheldrake. So the book ends up surveying a quarter century of
COMMENT:parapsychology, reaching some sharply skeptical conclusions. Its
COMMENT:concluding chapters on the psychology of paranormal belief are also
COMMENT:quite valuable, containing clear explanations of common misjudgments
COMMENT:of probability, in particular fallacies of subjective validation.
