COMMENT:Possibly the best recent scholarly skeptical book on multiple identities, false memory, and hypnosis. Spanos writes for an academic readership, so the pages are full of references to the psychological literature, and following his argument requires some basic familiarity with experimental psychology. However, there is a wealth of material here for the non-expert as well. Spanos shows how many weird phenomena like hypnosis, age regression, UFO abduction and satanic cult accounts, recovered memories, spirit possession, and multiple personalities can be explained in the context of social role-playing. A must-read for anyone interested in the psychology behind many popular paranormal beliefs.
