General info
--------------
WELCOME to the first of a series of AM/FM (Amiga Musicians Freeware Magazine)
Sample Disks! The AM/FM staff will release one of these sample disks for each
issue of the AM/FM magazine - they will be filled with first class sampled
sounds for the Amiga, for use in any music editor, like ProTracker,
NoiseTracker, MED, OctaMED, Oktalyzer, even Sonix, Music-X, and many many
other music programs.
Each of the sample disks will be specialized, one specific synthesizer, drum
computer, sound card etc. will be sampled for each of the AM/FM sample disks.
The AM/FM Sample Disks are available from the same places you get the AM/FM
magazine, i.e. directly from the AM/FM staff or any company licensed to sell
the AM/FM magazine and sample disks.
To ensure easy compatibility with the most popular music editors, the disks
will be named ST-xx where xx is a 2-digit number starting from 50 and
increasing by one for each AM/FM Sample Disk. This disk is called ST-50, the
next one, to be released together with AM/FM issue #2, will be called ST-51,
and so on.
Info about this disk
----------------------
The AM/FM Sample Disk #1, this disk, contains drums- and percussion-sounds
from the Roland PCM 10 sound card for PCM-compatible synthesizers, like the
Roland U110 or U220.
All the sounds have been sampled at the sample rate corresponding to the note
A3 in ProTracker, i.e. to be played at the original Roland pitch, they should
be played on note A3 in your favourite music editor. The most commonly used
sample pitch is is C3, but sampling on a higher pitch gives better sound
quality, and since drums and percussion don't have the same need to be tuned
as other, melodic instruments have, we chose to go for the best possible sound
quality. If you find that the samples take too much memory because of their
high sample rates, use the "Upsample" function in Audiomaster or ProTracker,
and the size of the sample will be halved, while the sound quality will suffer
radically on some samples, like the highhats, and less radically on for
instance the bass drums.
Also, some reverb effect has been added to the sounds as they were sampled, to
give a fuller sound. Should you prefer to use the samples without reverb,
simply cut off the last half of the sample, and be sure to scale the volume of
the sample from maximum at the start and down towards the end. For a nice,
full, live-like sound quality though, simply leave the samples and use them as
they are.
The samples are stored on the disk with an IFF-header at the start of each
file. This may cause the samples to click annoyingly when played from old
music editors that don't handle IFF files, like Soundtracker. To avoid this,
use a program to cut off the IFF headers or better yet, change to MED or
ProTracker.
