Introduction
ZoomText for Windows (ZTwin) is a screen magnification program for
Microsoft Windows. ZTwin is a standard Windows application program,
complete with a Windows user interface, but is otherwise similar in
operation and features to ZoomText. ZTwin is completely independent
of ZoomText in operation, so it is not necessary to have ZoomText
resident in memory to run ZTwin.
This chapter assumes that you have a working knowledge of both
ZoomText and Microsoft Windows. Refer to your Microsoft Windows 3.0
User's Guide for descriptions of basic Windows features.
Terminology
The following pages describe ZoomText terms as they are used in ZTwin.
Normal Screen
The normal screen is your unmagnified screen. This term is used
the same way in both ZoomText and ZTwin.
Magnified Screen
The magnified screen is your entire screen when ZTwin is on.
This is similar to the zoom window in ZoomText.
Viewport
The viewport is the portion of the normal screen that ZTwin
magnifies. The View feature shows the viewport superimposed over
the normal screen.
Scroll
Scrolling moves the viewport across the normal screen, changing
the portion of the normal screen that is magnified. You can
scroll while working in your application, or you can use the
Review feature to scroll to another part of the normal screen and
then continue working.
Cursor
Cursor refers to your mouse cursor in ZTwin.
Caret
Caret refers to your text cursor in ZTwin.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────

ZTwin Features
■ Magnify all Windows programs from 2 to 8 times normal size
■ Control all ZTwin functions directly from Windows programs, using
quick-keys and mouse-keys
■ Track on your mouse cursor, text caret, menu selections, and other
Windows controls
■ View the viewport superimposed over the normal screen
■ Review the contents of the normal screen by scrolling in any
direction, at any magnification, and at definable speeds
ZTwin System Requirements
In addition to the system requirements listed on page 5 of your
ZoomText manual, ZTwin requires:
■ Microsoft Windows 3.0 or later
■ VGA graphics adapter
■ 640 x 480 VGA driver installed in Windows

Installation
Unlike the full working product, the ZoomText Plus demo disk does not
contain an installation program.
Installing ZTwin
■ To install ZTwin on your hard drive:
1) Identify the drive and directory where your Microsoft Windows
software resides.
2) Insert your ZoomText Plus disk in the A: drive (or B: drive).
3) Type A: (or B:) and press [Enter].
4) Copy two files from the ZoomText Plus demo disk to your Windows
directory. If your windows directory is C:\WINDOWS you would
type:
COPY ZTWIN.EXE C:\WINDOWS and press [Enter]
COPY ZTLIB.DLL C:\WINDOWS and press [Enter]
Setting Up ZTwin in Windows
Microsoft Windows provides a number of ways to set up a program in
your Program Manager. The steps on the following page describe how to
add a program to a group window in your Program Manager.
■ To add ZTwin to a group window:
1) Load Windows and open the Program Manager.
2) Open the group window that you want to add ZTwin to.
3) Select New from the File menu.
4) In the New Program Object dialog box, click on Program Item.
5) Click on the [ OK ] button.
6) In the Program Item Properties dialog box, type "ZTwin" in the
Description field, and "ZTWIN.EXE" in the Command Line field.
7) Click on the [ OK ] button.
The ZTwin icon appears in the group window that you selected.

Loading ZTwin
When you load ZTwin, the screen magnifies to twice normal size (both
horizontal and vertical dimensions). You will see the portion of the
normal screen that contains the ZTwin icon, which is usually the lower
left corner of the screen.
Because ZTwin is a standard Windows application, it can be loaded
using standard Windows methods. The following are some of the options
you have in loading ZTwin:
■ Add ZTwin to a group window (page 3). Then double click on the
ZTwin icon after you load Windows.
■ Load ZTwin from the Program Manager using the Run selection on the
File menu.
■ Load ZTwin when you load Windows with the following DOS command
line:
C:>WIN ZTWIN
■ Set up ZTwin to load automatically when you load Windows. To do so
add or modify the LOAD statement in [Windows] section of your
WIN.INI to read as follows:
load=ztwin
If an error message displays when you load ZTwin, refer to the ZTwin
Error Messages chapter.

Using ZTwin
Once ZTwin is loaded, you can open and use your Windows programs as
you normally would. ZTwin navigational controls will help you to find
different parts of the screen, and ZTwin screen configuration options
will help you to set up the screen the way you want to.
ZTwin offers many options for navigation and screen configuration.
There are four ways to use these options:
■ The ZTwin Dialog Box
■ Quick-Key Commands
■ Mouse-Key Commands
■ View and Review Mode Controls
The ZTwin Dialog Box
Like the Pop-Up menus in ZoomText, all ZTwin screen configuration
options can be contolled from the ZTwin dialog box. The ZTwin
dialog box chapter (page 12) describes how to access the dialog
box and how to configure magnification, tracking, magnified screen
movement during tracking, enter View mode, and configure or enter
Review mode.
Quick-Key Commands
Use quick-key commands to turn ZTwin on/off, adjust magnification,
scroll the magnified screen, enter View or Review mode, turn
tracking on or off, or route the cursor to the center of the
magnified screen, without accessing the ZTwin dialog box. Most
ZTwin quick-keys are identical to ZoomText quick-keys.
Quick-key commands are a combination of the <$&alt1[-]> key and
another key. Hold down the <$&alt2[-]> key while you press the
second key.
Mouse-Key Commands
Use mouse-key commands to toggle ZTwin on and off, or enter View
or Review mode.
Mouse-key commands are a combination of a key and the right mouse
button. Hold down the key while you press the mouse button.
View and Review Mode Controls
While in View mode or Review mode, there are both mouse and key
controls that enable you to move the viewport. These controls
function the same way whether you enter the mode using the dialog
box, quick-keys, or mouse-keys.

Turning ZTwin On/Off
There are several ways to turn magnification on and off while you are
working in your application program. This is not the same as loading
and closing ZTwin; you can turn magnification off while ZTwin is
running. The following table describes these controls.

Screen Navigation
While working in a program, there are a number of ways to bring
different parts of your program into view. ZTwin offers the following
navigation options: tracking, scrolling with quick-keys, View mode
and Review mode.
The following sections describe these options.
Tracking
Tracking is a way of following your activity in a program and moving
the magnified screen accordingly. You can track so that the part of
the screen that you move your mouse to or the part of the screen that
you are working in is always in view. To configure tracking, see
Track and Justify Options, page 15.
Scrolling with Quick-Keys
Scrolling is a way of moving the magnified screen using your keyboard.
You can move continuously across the normal screen in any direction,
or you can move to the top, bottom, left edge, or right edge of the
screen with a single keystroke.
Scrolling is similar to tracking your mouse cursor movement.
Scrolling, however, gives you the option of automatically moving back
to your starting point. If you scroll when cursor tracking is on, and
you want to remain in the new location, use <$&alt 5 four[-]> to route
the mouse cursor to the center of the screen in your new location. If
you want to move back to your starting point automatically, move your
mouse slightly. This feature only works when cursor tracking is on.
The following tables summarize all ZTwin navigation options that you
can control with quick-keys. You can use these keys from any Windows
program while ZTwin is running.

View Mode
When you enter View mode, magnification is temporarily turned off.
You will see the viewport superimposed over the normal screen in
reverse video, representing the magnified screen when View mode is
off.
Use View mode to see where you are in your program, or to reposition
the viewport. When you exit View mode, magnification is turned back
on. You can exit to the new viewport position, or return to the
position you left when you entered View mode.
In View mode, you can move the viewport with the arrow keys or the
mouse. You can also move the viewport to the top, bottom, left edge,
or right edge of the screen with a single keystroke. The tables on
the following pages describe View mode controls.

NOTES:
Use the [*] key on the numeric keypad.
Arrow keys accelerate when you hold them down.
Review Mode
In Review mode, the magnified screen scrolls automatically across the
normal screen. You can define the direction of scrolling, what
happens when the viewport reaches the edge of the normal screen, and
the scrolling speed by setting Review options (page 17). Review mode
always begins scrolling from the current position of your magnified
screen.
Use Review mode to scan the contents of the normal screen, or to
reposition the viewport. When you exit Review mode, you can exit to
the new magnified screen position, or return to the position you left
when you entered Review mode.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
9
NOTE:
Review mode scrolling is smoothest when the horizontal magnification
is 1x or 2x.
In Review mode, you can interrupt scrolling at any time by using
directional controls. The magnified screen moves in the direction of
the mouse or keys while you are using them, and when you stop using
them, scrolling resumes after a short pause.
Other Review controls change scrolling direction, increase or decrease
scrolling speed, or freeze scrolling temporarily. The following
tables describe Review mode controls.

└────────────┘ └────────────┘
Track and Justify options control viewport movement while you are
working in Windows. As you move around in your application program,
the viewport moves with you so you can see what you are working on.
Tracking can follow the activity of the mouse cursor, text caret,
menus, other Windows controls, or a combination of these. The Justify
options determine how and when the viewport moves in relation to the
tracked activity.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
15
For example, if you are tracking on the mouse cursor, and you set
Justify to Edge, every time you move the cursor to the edge of the
magnified screen, the viewport will move. When the cursor is not near
the edge of the screen, the viewport will not move.
Or, if you are tracking on the mouse cursor and you set Justify to
Center, the viewport will move constantly to keep the cursor in the
center of the screen.
The Off option turns tracking off, so that the viewport does not move
while you are working. When tracking is off, you can use the
quick-keys to scroll the magnified screen (page 7).
You may select more than one Track option. The following table
describes Track option controls. For all Track options, [x] = On, and
[ ] = Off.

Review options control ZTwin's screen reviewing feature. During
Review mode, the viewport moves automatically across the normal screen
and displays its contents in the magnified screen. You can define the
direction of scrolling, what happens when the magnified screen reaches
the end of the normal screen, and the scrolling speed. The Review
mode always begins scrolling from the current position of your
magnified screen.
──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
17
NOTE:
The following options configure Review mode. For controls to use
while Review mode is on, see page 10.
Direction
Direction options set the direction of scrolling used for
reviewing the normal screen. The following table describes
Direction options. You can only select one option.
┌───────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┐

│ │ continues scrolling in the selected direction│
│ │ until you indicate another direction or it │
│ │ reaches the edge of the normal screen. │
└────────────────────┴──────────────────────────────────────────────┘
At-End
At-End options determine what happens when the magnified screen
reaches the end of the normal screen during Review mode. The
following table describes At-End options. You can only select one
option. The table on the following page defines the start point
and end point for each review direction.

Command Line Parameters
You can configure ZTwin automatically when you load it from the DOS
command line by using command line parameters. These parameters are
executed when you load ZTwin.
There are two guidelines for using command line parameters:
■ Multiple commands can be executed on a single command line.
■ Default settings are used at load-time when a command is not
specified on the command line.
■ To use command line parameters:
1) Change directories to the drive and path where your Microsoft
Windows software resides.
2) Type
WIN ZTWIN [all desired commands]
3) Press [Enter].
ZTwin loads with your specified settings.
NOTE:
To define command line parameters when you set up ZTwin in Microsoft
Windows, see "setting Up ZTwin in Windows".

ZTwin Error Messages
■ VGA running at 640x480 resolution is required!
If you are running Windows on a graphics adapter other than a VGA, you
must change your graphics adapter. See ZTwin System Requirements,
page 2.
If you are running Windows with a VGA, Windows might be configured in
a way that is imcompatible with ZTwin. Reconfigure Windows to use the
standard VGA driver.
■ Too many clocks or timers!
ZTwin needs a system timer in order to run. If all of the system
timers are being used by other applications, close an application that
uses a clock or timer, and try running ZTwin again.
