Borland C++ 4.5 offers most complete set of tools for Microsoft Windows
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- October 31, 1994 -- Borland International Inc. today announced Borland C++ 4.5, a major update to its award-winning, object-oriented C and C++ software development system for DOS, Windows, and Win32. Borland C++ 4.5 provides developers with the most comprehensive set of tools for easy OLE 2.0 development, 32-bit VBX support and 16- and 32-bit development.
"With our automated OLE 2.0 development solution, and full 16- and 32-bit support, Borland C++ allows developers to deliver first-class applications faster," said Paul H. Borland C++ 4.5 contains the new Object Components Framework (OCF), a C++ class library that encapsulates the complexity of the OLE 2.0 interface. OCF makes it easier for software developers to create new OLE-enabled applications and add OLE 2.0 functionality to existing code. OCF works in conjunction with straight C++ code, as well as popular application frameworks, including Object Windows Library (OWL) 2.0.

Software developers can now easily turn their existing Windows applications into OLE automation servers without change to the overall code structure. OCF permits programmers to receive OLE automation requests through Windows event handlers and then translates Component Object Model (COM) messages used to implement automation into Windows events. OCF also allows developers to create an OLE server as either a standalone executable program (.EXE) or as a DLL server. DLL servers allow programs to exchange information faster since the DLL server runs in the same process as the container application.
Developers can also use AppExpert and ClassExpert, Borland's critically acclaimed visual programming tools, in combination with OCF to create first-class OLE-enabled applications. AppExpert, which is used to generate the source code for a new Windows application, now allows programmers to create an application that is an OLE 2.0 Container, OLE 2.0 Server or both. Developers can now build either DLL Servers or EXE servers. ClassExpert, which is used to refine and customize applications, now permits developers to add handlers and classes and to automate classes.
OCF also encompasses automation support, which permits C++ classes to be automated without structural changes to the classes themselves. OCF's automation support provides hooks for undoing, recording and filtering automation commands. Because these classes expose member functions and data of C++ classes to other applications via OLE automation, developers can easily use OCF to quickly and efficiently retrieve translations to match whatever language OLE requests.

VBX Support
Borland C++ now allows programmers to take advantage of Visual Basic Extension (VBX) controls in a 32-bit environment. VBX32 permits standard 16-bit VBX controls to be used within 32-bit applications. Since no change is required to the VBX controls themselves, existing 16-bit programs that use VBX controls can be moved to 32-bits simply by recompiling.

Borland C++ 4.5 implements the latest in ANSI C and C++ standards for both 16- and 32-bit platforms, including full support for templates, exception handling and Run-Time Type Information (RTTI). By supporting multiple environments, Borland C++ offers developers a complete, compatible C++ implementation for DOS, Windows 3.1, Windows NT, and Windows 95. Since the source code is portable, developers can more easily target multiple platforms using the TargetExpert facility.
Borland C++ also includes a new high performance optimizer and code generator that allow developers to build 32-bit applications faster and easier. A new 32-bit back end increases programmer productivity since it reduces compile times up to 50 percent while producing faster code.
Borland C++ also includes OpenHelp, a new facility that lets developers configure the help files they use into a single logical file. This makes it easy to find help across all of the libraries and tools that developers use.
Pricing and Availability
Borland C++ 4.5 carries a suggested retail price of $499.95, with a special upgrade price of $149.95 for owners of any previous versions of Borland C++. Current owners of any other Borland product and owners of Microsoft Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C++ Watcom or Symantec C or C++ products have a special price of $199.95. Upgrades are available on CD-ROM; disks are available free by exchange and printed documentation is available at an additional charge.
With the Borland C++ 4.5 Free Update Program, registered owners of Borland C++ 4.5 will be entitled to receive two free updates. These updates will account for changes Microsoft makes to the final shipping version of the Windows 95 operating system. There is no extra charge for participation in this program.
