OnLine! BBSer Professional version 1.01ß - Setup Utility
Copyright 1994, Crater Rim Software. All rights reserved
OnLine! BBSer is the fourth generation of my old Canine Express (K9X) comm
package which originated in 1983. As of 1988, K9X (and now OnLine!)
REQUIRED an ANSI driver be installed via CONFIG.SYS. If you are not using
ANSI.SYS or an equivilant driver, you must add the following line to your
CONFIG.SYS file and reboot your system (set the path to ANSI.SYS to
whatever your setup uses).
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS
Installation of OnLine! is a pretty straightforward process. You've
obviously accomplished the first part by unzipping the main BBSR10.ZIP
files! You should now have BBSER.LBR, OLSETUP.EXE and this doc file (along
with the original .ZIP file). Before you start the installation process,
be sure to back up the original .ZIP file... THEN delete it from your disk
work area as it is no longer needed. Now copy all of the files into a
common work area... *** DO NOT *** place them in a directory called BBSR as
OLSETUP will create this directory for you and move all of the files into
their proper locations within the BBSR directory.
Now, simply start OLSETUP and select option A. The first thing you are
asked is your name. Since this version of OnLine! is *** FREE *** and you
have the opportunity to make commissions on each registration I receive
(see the OLBUCKS file in the DOCS directory), your name is automatically
installed into the program when you install it. You will then be prompted
for the drive where OnLine! is to be installed (or re-installed). Once
BBSER.LBR is unpacked, OLSETUP will create a new BBSR10.ZIP which contains
the copy of OL.EXE with *** YOUR *** name in it (this is how you make
commissions) and place it in the default upload directory (BBSR\ULS).
During installation, the process builds a drive table of all of the
avaialable paths on your system. OLSETUP will create OLULS and OLDLS in
the BBSR directory and assign them as your default upload and download
paths. You may choose other default upload and download paths while
selecting the paths you wish to install in the OnLine! drive table...
However, at minimum you must specify both a default upload and default
download path and they may however, be one and the same. If no default
upload and download path is specified, OnLine! will insert your default
OnLine! path. Once this has been completed, OLSETUP will start up OL in
configuration mode and step you through the configuration options. That
too, is pretty straightforward... Pay particular attention to the Swap
OnLine!, Swap Path, Load OnLine! overlay into EMS, and Connect resets baud
settings. You may enter OL in configuration mode at any time by entering
OL C at the dos prompt or by using the Alt-P command while OL is running.
After completion of the installation process, you may delete the BBSER.LBR
and other files from your disk *** WORK AREA *** as they too are no longer
needed.
If you plan on starting OL from directories other than the BBSR directory:
1) Edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT to include the drive and path to where OnLine!
resides (ie: PATH d:\BBSR where d: is the drive where OnLine!
resides).
2) Add the line SET OL!=d:\BBSR (where d: is the drive where OnLine!
resides).
3) Reboot your system so that the new Path and Set statements in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT take effect.
NOTE: There are a several external protocols pre-configured for your use.
However, there are no external protocol drivers supplied with this
package as it already supports 19 protocols internally! You may
however, install your own external protocol drivers (namely DSZ or
GSZ and Jmodem). If you use GSZ instead of DSZ, read the comments in
the GSZ.BAT supplied with the BBSR10 package.
Upon starting OLSETUP, you will notice 3 options on the menu. The first
option is the one used to install BBSer. Options 2 and 3 will create a
Drive table and protocol definition file respectively. NOTE that these
options are avialable only if you need to build one or both of these files
again. The installation process automatically builds these files for you.
