VENTURA SOFTWARE INTRODUCES FORMBASE VERSION 1.1 NEW YORK, NY -- June 18, 1990 -- Ventura Software Inc., a Xerox company, Monday introduced FormBase 1.1, a powerful forms processor integrated with a fully relational database. FormBase allows users to manage information faster, easier and less expensively than existing forms processors or database products. The new version has been redesigned to benefit from Microsoft's recently released Windows graphical environment version 3.0 for personal computers. The company made the announcement at the eigth annual PC Expo, being held in New York this week at the Jacob K. Javits Center. In addition to compatibility with Microsoft Windows 3.0, other key enhancements to FormBase 1.1 include support for the development of international versions, new powerful design tools and increased printing and sorting speed. "What distinguishes FormBase from other forms processors is the unique way in which the program combines forms creation with data management and data manipulation," said Lydia Chaverin, director of product marketing for Ventura Software. "The user only designs forms; the program takes care of the rest by automatically setting up the underlying relational database. "We feel that with the combination of these capabilities, FormBase sets new standards in the emerging category of forms processing software." FormBase 1.1 supports Windows 3.0 and can offer all the advantages of the power, ease of use and extended memory support provided in that environment. The product will continue to support Windows 2.1 and above; it will be shipped with Single Application Environment (run time) Windows 2.11 The redesign of FormBase allows international versions to be developed based on the popular ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standard. The addition of ANSI code to FormBase 1.1 provides support for the majority of characters which are unique to Europe and were not previously achievable using the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) code. Other international enhancements include support for country- specific sort sequences and international date formats. FormBase 1.1 also offers enhancements in database sorting and printing speed. Forms printing speed is up to four times faster with the popular Hewlett-Packard laser jet series printer. FormBase 1.1 will continue to allow users to import and export data from software products such as Microsoft Excel, Lotus 1-2-3 and dBASE III. FormBase 1.1 has a suggested retail price of $495. All registered users can upgrade for $49. Detailed upgrade information will be distributed to users in July. Ventura Software has a worldwide marketing strategy and will be shipping U.S., Canadian and Australian versions of FormBase 1.1 in the third quarter of 1990. Versions currently in development for the United Kingdom, France and Germany will be available later this year. Additional international versions are also planned.
