1-2-3 --> DBASEII I have finally found the soultion to translating LOTUS 1-2-3 .WKS files into dBaseII .DBF format. The April 17 issue of PC Magazine had the hint that got me onto the right path. The article is on page 130. Essentially, the trick is to remove ALL extraneous data from the 1-2-3 worksheet before attempting to translate it. I ended up with a worksheet which had a single row of labels starting in A1 ( these labels become the field names in dBaseII, so don't make them more than 10 characters long), and columns of data beginning in B1. The result was just what I was looking for, a .DBF file with the field lengths equal to the 1-2-3 column width. Just for fun I tried to translate it back to .WKS format again, and it also worked, albeit without the formatting of cells. Apparently, you have to do that manually. Again, the answer was to cut the worksheet down to bare bones. Too bad LOTUS didn't think to mention that small fact in their otherwise superb manual.
