texinfo-4.0: description + notes

Texinfo
GNU documentation system.

Texinfo is a documentation system that uses a single source file to produce both online information and printed output. This means that instead of writing two different documents, one for the on-line help or other on-line information and the other for a typeset manual or other printed work, you need write only one document. When the work is revised, you need revise only one document.

NOTE: This package will only work on IRIX 6.5 systems. It was built with the MIPSpro 7.3 compilers. If you are running on IRIX 6.5.9 or earlier you must install the following patches (or their successors):

  • patch 3911 (19 MB) -- compiler_eoe (except libmp)

Patches can be downloaded from http://www.sgi.com/support/patch_intro.html.

You can read the on-line information, known as an "Info file", with an Info documentation-reading program. Try M-x info in emacs, or the info command. If info or emacs has trouble locating an info file there are a couple things to try:

  1. Verify that the .info files exist in /usr/freeware/info.
  2. Make sure your INFOPATH contains /usr/freeware/info.
  3. Check to see if /usr/freeware/info/dir contains an entry for the info file. If it doesn't, then please file a bug against the package and ask your system administrator to run /usr/freeware/bin/gen-dir-node and save the output in /usr/freeware/info/dir.
