HOW TO UTILIZE THE AUTOMOBILE BILL OF SALE (SAMPLE2.txt) STEP 1: Print out this text to refer to while completing the Automobile Bill of Sale (SAMPLE2.txt). STEP 2: Load the SAMPLE2.txt file, then print a copy of it for later reference (press F5 to print). STEP 3: With SAMPLE2.txt still on the screen, save the file with a new filename by pressing "Ctrl-K", "N" and entering the new filename (such as Honda.txt). The new filename should appear at the top of the screen. You will edit the newly-named file, not the original. (This protects the original file from being corrupted or from being accidentally deleted during the editing process.) STEP 4: You may choose to fill the form out on screen or print it out for completion by hand (necessary if you plan to take the Automobile Bill of Sale to some location, such as an auction, where a computer won't be available). To ready the form for either method of completion, you must delete the numbers and their surrounding parentheses throughout the text. These items should not appear on your completed Bill of Sale. If you plan to complete the form on disk, you should also delete the underlined sections except where the underlines are to be used for signatures. Leave the "blanks" if you plan to fill it in by hand. STEP 5: Complete the Automobile Bill of Sale as outlined below. AUTOMOBILE BILL OF SALE EXPLANATORY TEXT The following numbered sections correspond to numbered blanks in the Automobile Bill of Sale provided on this disk (SAMPLE2.txt). Read each section carefully before completing the form. We recommend that you print this document for easy reference while completing the form. (1-2) - Type or write the Day, Month and Year. It is very important to document the exact date that a transaction takes place. (3) - Type or write the dollar amount in words, not figures, in the blank numbered with a (3). Then write the same amount in the blank that follows ($_____). Spelling out the dollar figure and writing the figure in numbers helps prevent confusion. Take care that the two numbers are the same. An example of how this should be done follows: Fifteen thousand, five hundred forty-five and 75/100 dollars....or ($15,545.75). (4) - Type or write the complete name of the buyer of the automobile. It is a good practice to take the name from some sort of identification, such as a driver's license. It is also a good idea to see the driver's license so that you know you are selling the automobile to a licensed driver. While some bills of sale may not include the buyer's name, it is a particularly good idea to include the name as it gives the seller someone to contact if he suddenly gets a notice that "his car" has been involved in an accidnet. This can happen when a buyer neglects to have the title changed by re-registering the car. (5) - Type or write the address of the buyer. This gives the seller a way to contact the buyer if any problems occur. This will also allow for the forwarding of any recall notices or other information. (6) - Type or write the seller's name as it appears on the existing automobile title. (7) - Type or write the name of the new registered owner of the automobile. This name may or may not be the same as the name of the buyer. (8-14) - Type or write an appropriate description of the vehicle in these "blanks." Check the registration and title forms for the descriptive terms used by the local department of motor vehicles. These terms are usually similar to the following example: Make: Chevrolet Model: Caprice Classic Body Type: Sedan Year: 1992 Color: Blue VIN: IGCDB15H3CF359102 Other: (15) - Type or write a list of the debts attached to the car. This would include any collateral mortgages or loans against the car. This information is often printed on the face of the title or registration. (16) - Type or write "NONE" here, if applicable. If there are other claims against the car, you probably shouldn't buy it. (17) - Type or write the names of the witnesses to the transaction. These are not necessary in all cases, but it never nurts to have too many! (18-19) - Type or write the name of the County (or Parish in Louisiana) and State where the Notary is commissioned (or let the Notary fill it out). (20) - Type or write the date the Notary's commission expires (or let the Notary fill it out).
