The benefits are obvious -- not only do students become more comfortable with computers, they also receive immediate feedback on their work. As a result, computers are perfect tools for "go at your own pace" learning situations. Instructors have found that any class, not just math and science, can use computers to advantage. By using Alex May's program, the teacher of any subject can create and administer matching quizzes entirely on computer. |E^1Quiz Maker^N has two main options, one for the student, the other for the instructor. The student uses the TAKE A QUIZ option from the main menu. After picking the assigned quiz, the student goes to the quiz screen itself, which consists of two columns of words. The left column usually consists of terms to be defined; the right column is usually a randomized list of the terms' definitions. The student uses the arrow keys and space bar to rearrange the right column so that terms and definitions are on the same line. After the student has exited the quiz screen, the computer displays the number of correct answers and the student's score. The student can go no further until the teacher enters a password. This delay gives the instructor a chance to record the student's score. Once the password has been entered, the computer displays the answers to the questions the student has missed. |E^1Quiz Maker^N gives more options to the teacher than it does the student. (So what else is new?) The teacher uses the UTILITIES option to construct the quiz by entering titles, questions and their answers, and other information appearing on the quiz itself. The teacher can also change or delete quizzes on file, and make printouts of both quiz and answer sheets. By using ^1CONTROL-A^0 in the change password option, teachers can create passwords of their own choosing. In addition, teachers can make |E^1Quiz Maker^N "student-proof" by making sure the students cannot get into the UTILITIES option. The few changes in code necessary to do this are explained in the instruction file accessed from the main menu of |E^1Quiz Maker^N. An example quiz, "Computer Terms", has been added to |E^1Quiz Maker^N; it shows what quizzes with this program are like, as well as giving you a chance to manipulate the quiz as you would one of your own. After taking the quiz, you'll be able to proceed by entering the password, ^1DISK^0.
