Even more interesting is their remark as to how IBM has shunned the nickname "Big Blue" (or at least until recently). The article goes even further to state that IBM "doesn't give a hoot about it (Softdisk Publishing) or the disk". I just want you at BBD to know how very much I enjoy your "magazine" (the day it arrives in the mail always turns out to be a great day) and I would like to help you out in any manner I can. I am going to write IBM and give them a piece of my mind. I have never thought of the name "Big Blue Disk" and associated it with "IBM". Come on all BBD subscribers, let's flood IBM with letters of complaint, we don't want to lose our favorite magazine to a STUPID lawsuit !!!!!!!!!!! ^RA Faithful BBD Subscriber, ^RCharles Bennett ^RPalestine, IL. ^1> After shunning the nickname "Big Blue" all these years, the management of ^1>IBM apparently decided it was time to stake their claim. We were not the only ^1>targets of these efforts, several companies felt the brunt of the IBM legal ^1>department. However, I am happy to report sanity reins and IBM has decided ^1>not to pursue the matter. We appreciate your concern and rest assured that ^1>we will continue to publish Big Blue Disk long into the future. |5ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ Dear Big Blue Disk, The value of comments made by other users about previous programs in Blue Notes would be increased if you added the number of the Big Blue disk on which the programs appeared. ^RMelvin Reich ^RRockville, MD. ^1> Thanks for the great suggestion! I will make every effort to include the ^1>issue number for all programs mentioned in the Blue Notes column. ^1> For those of you that may be interested, we have a Big Blue Disk back ^1>issue catalogue that can be obtained by calling our circulation department or ^1>dropping me a line at: ^C^1Bob Napp ^C^1Softdisk Publishing ^C^1606 Common St. ^C^1Shreveport, La. 71101 ^C^1Attn: Back Issue Catalogue ^1>The catalogue contains a breakdown, by issue number, of all programs ^1>published on Big Blue Disk. ^1> I would like to encourage you to send for this free catalogue and while ^1>you're at it, let me know what you think about Big Blue Disk. I always ^1>enjoy hearing from you! |5ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ Dear Big Blue Disk, I just renewed Big Blue. I enjoy exploring the possibilities of your programs even though I can't always use them. I'm including a few original Print Shop pictures with this disk. What is your policy on pictures? I have a number which aren't original to me and have no idea if they are copyrighted or not. Do you use these? Should I be using them if I didn't buy their original program (some came from shareware sources). None of them are copyright characters like Snoopy, etc. I've enjoyed adding to my library of PS images and hope you'll continue to feature them. It's not clear on PSutil2 (BBD #27) if I can copy images from one disk to another and consolidate my files. I've been using Print Shop to load the image and save to a new disk. Is there an easier way? Look forward to your next issue. ^RAlys Lavicka ^RChicago, Illinois ^1> We are always looking for new Print Shop graphics. Our primary requirement ^1>for the images that we publish is that they must be the original work of the ^1>artist. Since the images that you have submitted are your original work, we ^1>will be more than happy to review them for possible publication. Under the ^1>guidelines that I described, the other artwork that you mentioned could not ^1>be considered for publication. ^1> You mentioned that some of the images you received come from the shareware ^1>environment. I have found that a lot of people don't understand the ^1>difference between shareware and public domain. Items released to the public ^1>domain have been designated by their creator as available for use by anybody ^1>at no charge. The author may place other stipulations on their use, but there ^1>are no monetary obligations. Shareware, on the other hand, is a marketing ^1>concept that says "Try this program/artwork for a period of time. If you like ^1>it and continue to use it, you must pay the registration fee to the author." ^1>By no means are shareware items free! Any shareware item that you receive and ^1>use should be registered with the author. ^1> PSUTIL2 allows you to extract images from one file and either create a new ^1>file or merge them with an existing file. Unfortunately, you are limited ^1>to one path (ie., drive/pathname) for the Print Shop files. If you are using ^1>a hard disk, this is not a problem. Copy the Print Shop Utilities II program ^1>to the subdirectory containing your images and you can extract, merge, and ^1>create files easily. If you are working on a floppy disk based system, you ^1>will need to collect all the image files you want to work with on one disk ^1>before you can perform these functions. ^1> PSUTIL3, published on Big Blue Disk #34, solves this problem by allowing you ^1>to designate both a source and destination path for your images. This allows ^1>floppy disk users to load images from drive B and store them on drive A (or ^1>the other way around). You will need to select the Configuration Menu option ^1>from the Main Menu and set both the Source and Destination Print Shop ^1>Drive/Paths. |5ÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜÜ Dear Big Blue Disk, As a new subscriber and computer user I enjoy your Disk Magazine VERY MUCH! My first issue was #31 which I messed up when trying to copy Moraff's Revenge. I learned the hard way to use the write protect tab when copying. My idea was to place all games on one disk, Print Shop Images on another, utilities on another etc. I have a few questions and hope you can help. 1. Can you create a menu program for BBD users to use when one cata- logs his/her BBD programs? The names of the programs should be shown when one boots the disk. The user should be able to use the cursor keys to highlight a program and press the ENTER key to run it. 2. How can I use the Print Shop Images from BBD with the Print Shop Program? 3. I would like to learn machine language so I may learn to write and understand computer language. Are you going to have programs to teach machine language in the future? PS: To the Editor of BBD Diskovery, In the #33 BBD issue you asked for my help, you stated that you are considering producing two issues of BBD. One for the home user and one for the executive/small business owner. By all means DO IT! I would gladly subscribe to both issues. I feel that the extra cost of receiving both issues would be well worth it. Reason being your expertise in sharing your computer knowledge, the education, and entertainment placed on BBD is surpassed by no other disk magazine. ^RTed McKenzie ^RNorwalk, OH ^1> Actually, we have been working on a program of this sort. I hope that we ^1>will be able to include it in an issue of Big Blue Disk in the near future. ^1> You should treat the disk that contains the Print Shop images as a Print ^1>Shop data disk. If want to copy the artwork from the BBD disk you received to ^1>another disk that contains other Print Shop files, use the the "Copy It" ^1>option from the menu. Once you have a floppy that contains Print Shop ^1>graphics, follow the instructions provided in the Print Shop program owners ^1>manual supplied by Broderbund. These files should be on the same disk ^1>designated as your data disk in your setup. ^1> We currently have no plans to include a column to discuss assembly ^1>language programming techniques, but we will keep it in mind. ^1> I want to thank everybody for responding to my question contained in the ^1>Diskovery column of BBD #33 (Should BBD be split into two products?). I ^1>appreciate the time you spent expressing your ideas and suggestions. Believe ^1>me when I say, we will not make any changes without considering your thoughts.
