This is a quick reference guide to help you determine how to use 2COL with your particular brand of printer. Most newer printers have an Epson emulation mode. Use the settings for the Epson printer below that matches the emulation specified in your printer manual. Before using 2COL be sure to follow the procedure described in the manual that puts your printer into the Epson mode. If your printer is an older printer and not listed below, chances are that it will only print at 17 char/inch (unless the manual says otherwise). You should use the -W68 option with 2COL. You may not be satisfied with the results because most documents will be too wide for your printer to print in two columns (at 17 char/in the maximum column width is 68). At best there will be no room for a left margin. Shareware reformatting programs which will narrow the document's page width prior to printing are provided to registered 2COL users (see REGISTER.DOC). These programs will usually allow adequate results to be obtained with a 17 char/inch printer. If you printer has no Epson emulation, it can be made to work with 2COL in a limited way by creating your own setup string and using 2COL's -J-2 option. 2COL will work with some IBM mode printers at 17 char/inch.
