Objectives:
1. Students will learn how
to use the Digital Atlas.
2. Students will learn how the various instruments used for weather data collection
work.
Procedure:
Use the Take a Tour section
of the Digital Atlas of Idaho. To get there: Click on Atlas Home, Climatology,
Climate Station Data, then on Take
a Tour. Read through the material and Click on the various instruments in
the picture on the left of the screen to get a close up picture of each instrument
and receive information on what each device is used for. For a printable pdf
copy of a worksheet you can have your students complete, click below on the
handout sample.

Scientists use instruments to obtain information about what the weather is doing and what it might do in the near future. This exercise will give you an introduction to the various instruments that are used for obtaining weather information. Read through the 'Take a Tour' pages and be sure to click on the various instruments to get a close up picture of what each one does and how it works. Answer the following questions completely and accurately.
1. How did early forecasters obtain information on the weather?
2. What is an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS)?
3. What is a dewpoint sensor? How does this device measure dewpoint?
