================================================================ Title : Circus Maximus Filename : Rome1DM.wad Author : Patrick Patriarca Co-Author : Jason Pratt (sound and music changes) Email Address : patrick.patriarca@studio.com Description : This is NOT a cooperative play wad. IT CANNOT BE PLAYED CO-OP or SINGLE PLAYER. It is based on Rome1_1.WAD which turned out to be just a bit too big for two person Deathmatch. Thus I cut off the opening approach to the gate, and added a sunken boxing ring to the left of the Gate in case you gladiators care to box it out. I also changed the Circus Maximus itself with more sniper spots and and the other sniper spots for Deathmatch. Weapons have been moved to spice things up. This wad is ONLY for Deathmatch. It CANNOT be played as cooperative as there are no start positions for Co-op. It CAN be played deathmatch with monsters however .... I don't know why but I know some like monsters in Deathmatch ...they just get in my way! WHY DID I ADD THIS WAD?? I've long noticed that many wads seems to struggle trying to be better for single player, co-op , deathmatch or all three. Too often the wad seems to cut corners to be one two or all three. Soooooo , I decided to tweak the single player or co-op level , deathmatch (ROME1_1.WAD) for just deathmatch. Can't promise I will do this for ALL future levels but when they get too big like Circus Maximus (ROME1_1.WAD) I plan to re-do (usually make smaller and move weopons, ammo, secrets) the original wad for deathmatch ...thus you will often get two wads at a time as we go thru the ROME series with Deathmatch optimized in the DM designated wads. Naturally the original wad CAN be played DM if you want or for 2-3-4 players. This is (I quesss) officially my second wad! (Sort of cheating in a way huh??!!) It is an original, from scratch wad of a replica of the Circus Maximus in Ancient Rome. If you have ever seen the movie Ben Hur, the chariot race was held in an arena like this one. This repliica is taken from a scale model of the original Circus Maximus which now exists in the Museo della Civilta Romana (Museum of Roman Civilization) in Rome and a number of archaelogical books. I intend to make a series of wads taken from the same scale model of the ancient city of Rome. The series will be the ROME series of wads. Later I will merge them. The Story The creatures from hell have occupied the city of Rome and have begun to rebuild from the ruins various monuments and structures of Rome. You have earlier fought your way alone into the Eternal City. You THOUGHT you were done here. WRONG. Now the fiends have found ANOTHER human and you and he (or She??) are THEIR gladiators...fighting for their pleasure. And your life. You must fight to the death ..or the fiends will kill you all the quicker. You can't help but feel they are watching the entertainment. Sometimes their excitement brings them pouring into the Deathmatch area. Though you earlier cleared them from this part of the city it is said the creatures watch from hidden suveillance cameras from else where in the Eternal City. You awaken to find yourself with only a pistol and your fists. You are on the City side of the the Capan Gate. THE gate to the City. On this side of the Gate is the Circus Maximus. To it's right is the Septizodium Severi. They even have a sunken boxing ring to the left of the Gate so you can tear one another apart with Berserker enraged hands. You recite the ancient latin prayer of the Roman gladiators: "Ave Caesar ... moruturi te salutamas." (Hail Caesar...we who are about to die salute you) Let the games begin! S.Q. P. R. (With monsters if desired) Difficulty Settings : Yes New Sounds : Yes. Jason Pratt worked hard to import a series of overlayed Heretic door opening sounds (stone against stone instead of metallic doors in Roman times) . New Graphics : No New Music : Jason Pratt again imported "99 Ways to Die" by Megadeth Demos Replaced : None * Construction * Base : From Scratch. Editor(s) used : DoomCad 5.1 and BSP 12 (thanks to Jason Pratt for running the wad thru BSP 12 innumerable times at virtually any time I asked). Known Bugs : None * Copyright / Permissions * COPYRIGHT - Patrick Patriarca (1995) by Last Canal Chronicles NO ONE may use this or change it in any way other than to play it in the DOOM ][ game. I put ALOT of time (300 + hours ) into learning to use the editors , getting the scale right , reading up on the history , making the wad to scale size and beta testing. I spent ALOT of donated time for all the people who play and I just ask to please repect what I created. I get no money so the work and satisfaction is all I get ok?? Thanks to Jason Pratt for running it thru BSP 12 and building the nodes, beta testing with me and encouraging me to continue and cut back on the monsters to speed the game up. He also helped me decide on and design the exit ...he did the "invisible " walk thru exit which allows for a smoother transition from wad to wad in this series. He also made some good suggestions on some textures. I have not put the colored strips that normally are on the side of the doors requiring keys in order to maintain the realism . Likewise the exit is not marked but shall we say OBVIOUS once you get to it. Thanks to ID for a GREAT modular game allowing us to act out our fantasies. Thanks to the Museo della Civilta Romana for the scale poster of Ancient Rome. Thanks to Terry Riedel for doing one of the final Beta tests on Co-op (Rome1_1.wad) . And of course his feedback. Thanks to Jon Odom for testing Rome1DM.wad and agreeing with choice of "99 Ways..." Thanks Megadeth for "99 Ways to Die". It worked so well ...if any of you guys (in Megadeth) play DOOM (you should try it) let me know how you liked the wad and how the music fits. Everyone loves it. Hope its ok.... Sorry for the confusion with Rome1.WAD ... but it was out and the changes sounded SO good.
