Before you download your version of Netscape Navigator, click the
Reload button in the Navigator toolbar so you are sure you have the most
recent version of the FTP download page.
Decide which version of Netscape Navigator you need to download.
You can choose between Macintosh, Windows, and Unix platforms. For Windows, you
need to decide if you want the 16-bit or 32-bit version. If you are using
Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups, you need to download the 16-bit
version of Netscape Navigator for Windows. If you are using Windows 95, you
should download the 32-bit version for
Windows - unless you are using Netscape Navigator Personal Edition
(16-bit). If you are, it's important that you download the 16-bit version.

WINDOWS
USERS
Before you download Navigator, take note of the directory to
which you are downloading the software. The default directory is the directory
containing your current running version of Netscape Navigator - and you should
not download your new version of Navigator into this directory. Instead,
you should download Navigator into a directory other than the default directory.
The program you download from the FTP site is a self-extracting file
(.exe). Once you download this file, you need to install it.
Double-click
the .exe file to decompress the Netscape Navigator files. Or, from
the DOS prompt,
type the file name and hit Return to decompress the Navigator files.
Once you have extracted the files, double-click Setup to install
Navigator.
The Setup program will ask you for the target directory for the
installation.
If you want to use your existing bookmarks, preferences, and settings,
you can install Netscape Navigator into the directory of your current Navigator
(make sure your current Navigator is closed). The 16-bit version of Netscape
Navigator will ask if you want to continue using your existing
netscape.ini
file. If you want to continue using existing bookmarks and preferences,
do not overwrite this file.
MACINTOSH
USERS
Before you download Navigator, take note of the folder to which
you are downloading Navigator. The default location is your Macintosh
desktop. Make sure you do not download your new version of Netscape Navigator
into the same directory as your current version of Navigator. You can change
the default FTP download directory by holding down the Options menu item,
selecting Preferences, and changing the Directories and Applications dialog
box.
The compressed file that you download will extract automatically. The
installer will appear in your target folder.
Double-click the installer. It will prompt you for an
installation folder. The default folder is called Netscape. If you install
into the Netscape folder that contains your current version of Navigator,
your old version of Netscape Navigator will be overwritten, but you can
still use your existing bookmarks, preferences, and settings.
