ATTENTION: ALL AOTP FANS SUBJECT: AUTHENTIC HANDLING COMES TO AOTP AIRCRAFT Here's what I did. I divided the roll rates for all 39 AC in the original game by a factor of 4. I divided the pitch rates for same by a factor of 2. These changes where made to the initial, recover and main banking and pitch rates as described in Tagert's UP2NOWAP (required reading for AOTP Hacking 101). I suggest that you set the time scale slider to maximum for best effect (closure rates and roll and pitch times as I intended them). Barrel rolls are now authentic! Closure rates are authentic! Can it be? YES!! Just copy the .FMD files into your aces directory and have fun. Any tapes you have made previously won't play back the same but if you don't like my changes you can just delete the .FMD files from your aces directory and you'll be as good as new. Many thanks to Tagert and every other hacker who has help him. These guys unearthed all the info we have so far. I just took a few bit of this info and tinkered with to find what felt right (no hard data on pitch rates), and did some grunt work to make the mods to all AC. I noticed that the roll and pitch rates are the same for most planes of any one class. In other words, a P51, Corsair, Tony, Hellcat etc. will have the same pitch and roll rates. Dynamix didn't seem to make fine differences between AC handling. There are about 2 sets of rates for fighters, bombers, etc and any AC in the game will use one of those 2 sets of data used for planes of its type. I stuck with this since I only noticed this in the process of my hacking, so a Tony and a P51 will still handle the same but both at a more realistic level. Perhaps later with more data on all the different AC, we can make finer distinctions in the handling of the different AC. My model for all of this was a .GIF file in lib 7 called rolrat.gif which graphically represents the roll rates of a few WWII fighters at different speeds. I chose the p51h and used its optimum roll rate from the chart which was 90 degrees per sec between 300-350 mph. So about 4 secs to roll 360. That's the result I got from my mods. I assumed that all other AOTP AC where off by that same margin which seems to have been a good starting point. At this point different roll rates for different altitudes was not included in my mods so the planes roll and pitch the same at all altitudes. Tagert believes that Dynamix made provisions for this but didn't implement them. Larry Grill may soon give us some insight into this so that we hackers can implement it for them. Id
