Included in first aid is self-help and care at home if medical attention is not available or you are delayed in receiving it. First aid can mean the difference between life and death. It also can make a difference between permanent and temporary disability, and a long hospital stay or rapid recovery from the injury. Accidents are one of the leading causes of death. It is not enough to just say "Call the doctor" because a doctor may not be able or available to come to the scene of an accident. If you are trained in first aid you will be prepared to give instructions to those that are not and to promote in them reasonable safety attitude. It is a humanitarian obligation to assist someone who is stricken or helpless and the tremendous satisfaction of this assistance is beyond measure. PREPARATION FOR ANY DISASTER includes training in first aid because in time of disasters such as hurricanes, tornado, earthquake, floods and large fires the hospitals and medical services are usually filled to capacity and beyond.
