Glossary

     communes-Lowest administrative subdivision of which there were 141 in
1969. Administered by an elected mayor and council.

     gross domestic product-Value of total production originating within
national borders. Calculated before deduction of depreciation of fixed assets.
Monetary gross domestic product excludes value of subsistence production.

     Mwami-Title of the traditional Tutsi king of Rwanda. Plural, Bami.
Monarchy abolished as a result of 1961 election.

     PARMEHUTU-(Parti du mouvement de l'emancipation Hutu; Party of the Hutu
Emancipation Movement.) Political party formed in 1959 with the goal of ending
Tutsi rule. After the overthrow of the Tutsi monarchy, PARMEHUTU, under
leadership of Gregoire Kayibanda, governed the country and, in 1969, was only
active party.

     paysannats-Planned agricultural settlements established by Government to
increase agricultural production and to promote resettlement from densely to
thinly populated areas.

     prefecture-Major administrative division of which there were 10 in 1969.
Administered by a prefect who is Presidential appointee.

     RF-Rwandan franc, the unit of currency. Until devaluation in April 1966,
equivalent to approximately US $0.02; after devaluation, US $0.01.

     ubuhake-Patron-client relationship between the Tutsi and the Hutu by
which the Hutu obtained use of Tutsi cattle and rendered services to the owner
in return. Formally abolished by Hutu Government.

     umusozi-Hill. Social and economic division of the districts, comprised of
a neighborhood formed by a hill, the surrounding valleys, and the families
living within.
