Two villages lying in the narrow valley of the Our. There are lovely walks in the district and many views. At Stolzembourg the ruins of a mediaeval castle will be found, and opposite Bivels is the castle of Falkenstein. The Our Dam is downstream from Bivels. Boevange-sur-Attert with the localities and communities of Grevenknapp, Bill, Finsterthal, Buschdorf and Brouch. 1 400 inh. - a: 240 m. Wooded country on the banks of the Attert. The Benedictine Abbey of St. Maurice and St. Maur, built in 1910 in Romanesque-Burgundian style, dominates the valley. Exhibition "The Monastical Life". In the feudal castle, founded in the 12th century, exhibitions "Models of the ancient Luxembourg Castles", the "Family of Man", photographs by Edw. Steichen and "Souvenirs, documents, arms and uniforms of world war II". An interesting parish church in the Rhenish-Romanesque style, was built in 1910 of local stone. Various historical monuments. A picturesque holiday resort, and one of the principal gateways to the "Moellerdall", an attractive region combining the natural beauty of woods, rocks and mountain streams. Remains of a Roman camp. They are ideal centres for those in search of real tranquillity and rest. Walks and rambles through fields and woods in the district are well marked. Near Masseler, a hamlet with only 30 inhabitants and lost in the countryside, there is a remarkable viewpoint from which 25 other villages can be seen far away, on a clear day. Thanks to the hotelkeeper A. Heck it was in Diekirch where the development of the Luxembourg tourism started. From the cradle of tourism Diekirch turned finally into a centre of it through its situation, where the wilderness of the Oesling meets the more human beauty of the Good Land, through its historical past, its touristic infrastructure. Diekirch has maintained the aspect of an island of freedom and beauty. Civilization has retained its sense: Spirit speaks through the dolmen, the old church (15th cent.) built on Roman foundations, the Roman mosaics, the streets and lanes, the public squares with their fountains, the houses, the quarter of Old Diekirch. The town integrates in nature and nature enters into the town. Situated in the valley of the Chiers in the southern part of the country. Differdange, an important industrial centre (wellknown for its Grey type steel girders), is also known as "steeltown". Dudelange. 14 100 inh. - a: 289-422 m. The Town of Dudelange, also known under the name "Forge du Sud" lies at the foot of mount St. Jean. Despite of its numerous industrial activities one discovers the unexpected and yet discret charms this Land of Labour, dominated by the characteristic red rocks, offers: In the Neogothic styled parish church one discovers the famous Way of the Cross created by one of the greatest painters in the Grand Duchy, Dom. Lang RTL tv transmitter on the "Ginzebierg" hill-top the nearby steel-mill on "Mount St. Jean", providing excellent panoramic views, touristic tower and restored ruins of an ancient castle sports centre Rene Hartmann with an indoor swimming-pool and an omnisports hall open air swimming-pool with terrace and restaurant municipal park "Lei" natural park "Haardt" with a surface of 240 ha. Attractive is also the commercial centre with the Townhall, the local museum (archeology, paleontology, history, steelwork and photo-gallery) and many parking-lots. Echternach. 4 000 inh. - a: 165 m. This beautiful town lies on the bank of the Sure, which forms the frontier with Germany. Nearby is the "Moellerdall", also the Germano-Luxembourg natural park. The surrounding woods are criss-crossed with hundreds of foot-paths, and in them complete solitude and quiet can be found among rocks, waterfalls and view points. The town of Echtermach is especially well known for the dancing procession, the only one of its kind in the whole world, which takes place each Whit Tuesday, attracting thousands of pilgrims and interested spectators it dates back for centuries. The old patrician houses, narrow streets and ancient ramparts have helped Echternach to retain a remarkable mediaeval atmosphere. The old Benedictine Abbey, founded in the 7th century by St. Willibrord, has four wings of 70 metres, built round a large square courtyard. The Basilica, the most important religious building in the country, contains in the crypt a magnificent white marble sarcophagus in which are the remains of St. Willibrord. The vaults are painted with frescoes dating back to about 1100. The old parish church of St. Peter and St. Paul is reputed to be the oldest Christian sanctuary in the country, and stands on a slight hill in the middle of the town. The Townhall overlooking the Market Square is a remarkable historical building of the 15th century. Exquisite Louis 15th pavilion. Enscherange. See Wilwerwiltz. Erpeldange (Ettelbruck). With Ingeldorf and Burden. 1500 inhabitants. At 210 meters altitude, is the gate to the Ardennes, situated at the exit of the valley of the Haute-Sure. The Sure meanders a long way around "Burdenerhals" from where the view is very extensive. Another lookout point: The "Predigtstuhl". Well marked walks. Eschdorf. See Heiderscheid. Esch-sur-Sure. 240 inh. - a: 280 m. This small, typical Ardennes market town lies in one of the most impressive settings in Luxembourg, enshrined between steep crags and almost completely surrounded by the river Sure. The houses cluster round a steep, high rock, crowned with the ruins of a once mighty castle. Forbidding cliffs drop straight to the river. The town is reached by passing through a tunnel, constructed in 1850, then the route leads through a second tunnel dating from 1954, and finally to the great barrage of the Sure. Ettelbruck. 6 500 inh. - a: 210 m. An important rail and road junction where three valleys meets, and just at the commencement of the wild hilly Ardennes. An important commercial and tourist centre. Ettelbruck lies in very pretty surroundings, and is a starting point for tours and excursions in many directions. Commemoration monument in honour of General Patton Jr. Patton Museum. Capital of the Luxembourg Moselle, important vine-growing, commercial and administrative centre in very pleasant surroundings. Cellars of the cooperative vine-growers with a capacity of 50 000 hl. Caves Bernard-Massard, whose sparkling wines are favoured by the connoisseurs. Old town with small streets, remains of mediaeval fortifications, belfry (13th cent.). Omnisports hall. This village is dominated by the masts of Radio Luxembourg's transmitters. The Baroque parish church is well known for the tombstones of the knights of Linster. Mecher. 56 inh. and Nothum. 130 inh. are typical remote Ardennes villages lying in a wild and attractive setting with its rolling hills and deep valleys, surrounded by fields, meadows and thick forests. Pure aire, beautiful hiking trails and the nearby lake allowing plenty of water-sport activities are the main assets of this peaceful natural parklike area. On Whitsun Monday, pilgrimage leading to the St.Pirmin chapel and source. Rebuilt bunker of world war II. The headquarters of the municipality of the Upper Sure Lake are at Bavigne. Small village between mountains covered by the Ardennes forests. In the centre a fountain surrounded by a lawn with flowers, trees and benches. A quaint old market town, lying in a narrow rocky valley, entirely surrounded by woods. Larochette is dominated by two old castles (partially rebuilt) which stand on a rocky crag high above the beautiful and romantic Valley of the White Ernz. This charming Ardennes village is situated next to the banks of the Lake of the Upper Sure, where all sorts of watersports (swimming, yachting, wind-surfing, canoeing, fishing, etc.) are practised in the calm of the surrounding wooded heights. In the heart of the country, on the banks of the river Alzette. Lintgen is surrounded by hills and forests, where there are many lovely walks. Lorentzweiler. 2 500 inh. - a: 227 m. Modern and clean locality, situated along the Alzette in the valley of the same name. On both sides of this valley rise wooded hills, criss-crossed by many footpaths. Luxembourg. Agglomeration with 120 000 inh. - a: 230-408 m. The thousand years old capital of the Grand Duchy, residence of H.R.H. the Grand Duke, seat of Government with Ministries and Government Departments and the diplomatic corps and consulates. Here, also, are the Court of Justice of the European Communities, the Court of Auditors of the E.C., the general secretariat of the European Parliament, the Consultative Committee, the European Investment Bank, the European Monetary Fund, the Office of Statistics and other services. The National museum houses a great variety of collections: Mineralogy, zoology, archeology, sculpture, ancient and modern painting, industrial and popular art the J.P. Pescatore Municipal Gallery shows pictures and works of art from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and the National Library has more than 600 000 volumes. Luxembourg was for centuries one of the most powerful fortresses in the world (See the historical model of the fortress at the "Rathskeller"). Dismantled during the years 1867-1883, many relics of its historic past have been preserved, including the ancient Citadel of St. Esprit and the remains of the Luxembourg Castle on the Bock rocks. The massive fortifications are now transformed into charming parks with pleasant walks, which are particularly attractive around the lower town. Then there are the Casemates, a 21 kilometres network of underground passages, hewn from the solid rock (Pont du Chteau and Place de la Constitution). Unique in Europe is the famous Promenade de la Corniche. Other points of special interest are the town gateways, the Towers of Rham, the Three Acorns, the elegant Spanish turrets, 110 bridges, including the Pont Adolphe, 46 metres high and 84 metres wide, the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, 85 metres high, and 5 massive viaducs up to 43 metres high. Among the many interesting buildings of this ancient fortress city, mention must be made of the Grand Ducal Palace, built in the 16th and 18th centuries and of which the older part is in a remarkable Renaissance style, the Foreign Ministry, built in 1751, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame with magnificent sculptures (1613-1621) and its crypt containing the Grand Ducal Mausoleum and the tomb of John the Blind, King of Bohemia and Count of Luxembourg. Then there are the ancient College of Jesuits (1603, 1686, 1713 and 1735) nowadays seat of the National Library, the Townhall (1830-1838). The Church of St.Michael (10th and 16th centuries). the Chapel of St. Quirin (14th century and earlier), the Church of St. Jean upon the Stone, situated in the lower part of the town and built in the 17th century, the Protestant Church (18th century) and the numerous old houses of the nobility. The principal modern buildings include the Municipal Palace (Cercle) at the Place d'Armes, the Episcopal Palace, the headquarters and studios of Radio-Tele-Luxembourg, the Pescatore Foundation situated in the park and the Municipal Theatre in front of which the monument in honour of Robert Schuman, the Savings Bank on the Place de Metz, the offices of A.R.B.E.D in the Avenue de la Liberte, the Central Station with the nearby Church of the Sacred Heart, the very modern church at Cents, the remarkable church of Belair, the Athenaeum on the Boulevard P. Dupong and as the latest achievement, the European Centre at the Kirchberg, which commands a view of the entire city. Another building is the Secretariat of the European Parliament, the construction in steel and glass the European Court of Justice, a similar building the Calculation Center, and in another edifice are the services of the Commission. Father on the East, we find the "Eurocontrol-Institute", an international school for air-control, the buildings of the "European School", the Technical School, the covered olympic swimming pool and the exhibition halls of the Luxembourg International Fair. On the same plateau are also the European Investment Bank, the Court of Auditors of the E.C. and the European hemicycle. During the tourist season the ancient fortifications, the chief bridges and the principal buildings are magnificently illuminated. Recreation centres at Kockelscheuer and Baumbusch. At the military cemetery of Hamm, 5 kilometres away from the city, 5 100 American soldiers of the famous 3rd Army of General G. Patton Jr. are buried and the General rests with them. A kilometre farther on, a German military cemetery contains about 11 000 graves. The City of Luxembourg offers multilingual cultural, theatrical and musical life in winter on a high international level. In summer attractions await the visitors: many public concerts, folklore performances, sport competitions, bus excursions and above all magnificent walks, whether in the demesne of the ancient fortifications or in the thousands of hectares of forest which extend North of the city especially (Baumbusch and Grunewald). Luxembourg is a centre of excursions not only for the Grand Duchy but equally for the neighbouring countries.
