The Rate of Return calculations are fixed and do not change for each fund.
The Return on Investment calculator allows you to change two variables, i.e:
The Investment Amount
Simply enter a new value (in Rands) by typing the new amount
The Initial Date
Simply click the small arrow buttons to change the starting year.
Note that the date cannot be moved beyond the first date for which data is available.
Note: Foreign currency symbols
If the calculated investment result is expressed as a foreign currency,
this is due to your system settings (Date/Time settings in Windows) and
is intended to be expressed in Rands.

The calculator consists of two components, i.e. the Return on Investment calculator and
the Rate of Return calculations. As with the graphs these two components are designed to
give you an understanding of the growth and return on an investment, respectively.
Please note that the past performance of a fund does not guarantee similar performance in the future
This allows you to input an lump sum amount as an initial investment and calculates what
that amount would have grown to, if the funds are withdrawn. The withdrawal date is
derived from the last date for which data is available for the fund. The month and day of the initial date is the
same month and day as the withdrawal date and may be set for any year preceding the withdrawal
year, for which data is available.
The calculator also calculates the following:
The Equivalent Fixed Interest Rate
This is the fixed interest rate that would be necessary to obtain the same return on the
initial investment. This interest is calculated as a fixed interest, compounded monthly, in
order that it might be compared to fixed interest rates offered by various financial
institutions.
The Rate of Return
Similar to the Rate of Return calculations, this reflects the return on investment over
the period in question. It is calculated by expressing the difference between the final
and investment value as an average interest rate, compounded yearly. It
represents the industry standard performance figure.
The Inflation rate over the Period
The inflation rate is calculated in the same manner as the Rate of Return,
by using the monthly CPI rate (as supplied by Central Statistical Services)
to determine the present, real value of the initial investment amount.
It is also calculated by expressing the difference between the present, real
and investment value as an average interest rate, compounded yearly.
Real Rate of Return
This is the difference between the Rate of Return and the Inflation Rate over the period in
question.
Annualised rates of return are calculated for fixed periods preceding the specified date,
where data is available. Since these rates are calculated in exactly the same manner and
over the same period for all funds they may be used as a comparative gauge of the
historical performance of each fund.
These rates represent the industry standard performance figures.

All calculations are based on Price data supplied by Prof. Hugo Lambrechts of the University of Pretoria.
All dividends are reinvested at the buyers price on the day that the dividend is physically
paid out. This is true for all funds, including growth funds.
Return on Investment
The initial charge, brokerage and marketable securities tax is taken into account.
The full 5% initial charge is subtracted.
Return on Investment is always calculated using Selling to Repurchase
prices, regardless of the period in question.
Rates of Return
1 year and last quarter calculations are based on Selling to Selling prices.
No charges are therefore taken into account.
All other calculations are based on Selling to Repurchase
prices, with the following charges taken into account:
- The initial charge, brokerage and marketable securities tax is taken into account.
- The full 5% initial charge is subtracted.
