The Matobo Hills, near Bulawayo, are home to the white rhino, sable antelope, the leopard and klipspringer. The greatest concentration of black eagles in the world soar above its granite castles in search of prey. In addition to game-viewing by vehicle or on foot, there are horseback safaris and expeditions to historical and scenic sites among the hills. Bushman paintings dating back several hundred years can be discovered, and some of the finest examples on the continent of this ancient art are found in the caves of the Matobo Hills. Visits to nearby African villages provide an opportunity to see how the local people live, and to browse through some of their beautiful crafts. At Matobo Hills Lodge, you will find well-appointed individual lodges with en suite facilities, each positioned among the rocks on a granite ridge offering views across the Maleme Valley. All the guest lodges, plus the dramatic bar/lounge/dining room complex, are thatched in the traditional Matabele style giving Matobo a unique atmosphere. Raised walkways, shady gardens and a swimming pool built into a natural cleft in the rock provide a picturesque setting.
