At the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe Rivers, lies in an area known historically as the Tuli enclave - a diverse wilderness of savanna, riverine forests, marshland, open plains and sandstone outcrops. It is here that the largest of the Rattray Reserves is situated. The Mashatu Game Reserve gets its name from the magnificent Mashatu trees which occur in this 90,000 acres of private land. Mashatu provides a refuge for the single largest population of elephants on privately-owned land in the world. Game drives are taken in radio-linked four-wheel drive vehicles at dawn and dusk in search of the varied flora and fauna - 350 species of birds, plains cheetah, zebra, giraffe, eland, impala, steenbok, elephant, leopard, lion, kudu, waterbuck and more. On spot-lit night game drives, nocturnal animals such as civet, genet, porcupine, aardvark and others can be found. Walking safaris can be done with your safari ranger.
Main Camp: After an exciting game drive the air conditioned en suite accommodation at Main Camp offers a welcome respite. The 15 insect-proofed bedrooms have a his and her shower and a shaded, private verandah connected by French doors offers a spectacular view. Refreshments are served at the swimming pool and in the bar, which overlooks a large waterhole frequented by game. Breakfast and lunch are served buffet style in the thatched, open sided terrace also overlooking the waterhole. A unique boma with a large viewing window and spotlights over the waterhole provides a setting for dinner where guests are seated around a central camp fire under a starry sky.
Tent Camp: Nestled in the remote northern area of the reserve lies Mashatu Tented Camp. With never more than fourteen guests, this idyllic getaway provides accommodation in the form of seven double tents. Although rustic in character, every facility is provided. The tents are insect-proofed, have comfortable single beds and each has en suite shower and toilet facilities. A thirst quencher after a game drive may be taken around the plunge pool. Breakfast and lunch is served on the open sided thatched deck and after an exciting day on safari, a delicious dinner in an intimate boma around a campfire will complete your perfect African experience.
