Focus on Africa
Commitment to Conservation

Tourism plays an important role in preserving Africa's spectacular natural heritage. The fact is, if tourists do not come to view the wildlife, it will not survive. As long as local people benefit from tourism, there is an incentive to protect wildlife habitats and the wildlife.

Knowing that the future of Africa's wildlife would be in peril if tourism declined, Focus On Africa decided to do its part in promoting responsible eco-tourism to Africa. During 1993, David Anderson organized the Focus on Africa project. During a four month period, 136 photographers, mostly amateur, traveled to Africa on one of 25 Focus on Africa safari programs, covering 8 countries. The objective was to capture the magic of an Africa safari on film. These images are used to illustrate the beauty and diversity of Africa as a tourist destination, further educating people about Africa. The images were also used to produce the book Focus On Africa: Wildlife, Conservation, and Man, and its companion video. The text was co-authored by David Anderson with the message that responsible eco-tourism embodies the best hope for saving Africa's unique natural heritage.

In 1994 and 1995, the Focus on Africa project continued by offering photographic safaris. David Anderson will continue to sponsor "Focus on" safaris and spread the project's message of conservation. As long as wildlife remains a sustainable economic resource it will survive for future generations to enjoy. For those of us who have visited Africa and have had the privilege of witnessing its splendor, it is our goal to help it survive to enrich the lives of others.
