1996 Chevrolet Camaro

The 1996 Chevrolet Camaro is available in six models - (Base) Coupe, Convertible, RS Coupe, RS Convertible, Z28 Coupe and Z28 Convertible. New for 1996, base coupes and convertibles feature a 200hp 3.8L V-6 engine as standard equipment and Z28 models offer a new SS alteration package. Z28 models feature air conditioning, a 285hp 5.7L V-8 engine, limited slip differential, dual exhaust and optional traction control. All models feature dual airbags, ABS brakes, AM/FM cassette stereo and Pass-Key II theft deterrent system. Coupes offer optional removable glass tops, while convertibles feature a standard power folding top. Additional options include leather seats, stereo upgrades, Performance Handling Package and preferred equipment groups.

Ownership Cost Definitions

List Price, including typical options for this class. The list price of the vehicle is the manufacturer's suggested retail price. We include "typical options" in order to make apples-to-apples comparisons of vehicles in the same class. We choose the options that are equipped in two-thirds or more of the vehicles of that class in recent model years. The list that we choose from includes air conditioning, cruise control, automatic transmission, power steering, rear defroster, AM/FM cassette stereo, tilt steering wheel, power windows, anti-lock brakes, and extended truck bed.

Target Negotiated Price. You can reasonably expect to negotiate this price for the vehicle as configured; however, it is not generally the lowest price you may find. It includes an average acceptable mark-up for the dealer, which varies from model to model based on market conditions. This figure includes recent market conditions.

All additional charges and taxes: All additional charges and taxes: These are the "extras", including destination fee, port/prep charges, sales tax, luxury tax, and gas-guzzler taxes. We assume a 5% sales tax.

Rebate: If a nationally available rebate is in effect, it is deducted.

Target Negotiated Price. Total "Out the Door" Price: This is the grand total price for the vehicle, the sum of the Target Negotiated Price plus all additional charges and taxes, less any rebates. This is the starting point for ownership cost analysis, because this is "what you get".

Time Period: A 5 year time period is used. Chances are, you will own your new car for this length of time.

Financing: 20% down payment on a 48 month loan. Annual interest rate of 9.3%.

Depreciation assumptions: We assume you keep your vehicle for 5 years, then sell it yourself to a private party. Your vehicle will be in good condition with typical mileage. Your resale value will tend to follow a pattern set by earlier versions of the same model, by brand, by model group, by vehicle class, by vehicle price range, and by area of the country.

Insurance assumptions: INSURANCE COSTS VARY TREMENDOUSLY. Our figures are representative, but could never be exact. We assume:

Fuel: U.S. Government EPA mileage figures. Mileage is 60% highway, 40% city. Fuel cost per gallon is $1.12 for unleaded regular, $1.21 for unleaded mid-grade, $1.30 for premium, and $1.32 for diesel (subject to inflation).

Maintenance: This is the cost of following the manufacturer's scheduled maintenance, and the additional maintenance tasks outlined in The Complete Car Cost Guide. Cost per service is based upon industry-standard service times and national labor rate averages by brand. Parts prices are based on manufacturer's suggested list price where available.

Repairs: Repair cost is based on the cost of a $0 deductible extended service contract that will pay for repairs for 5 years or at least 70,000 miles. Figures used are averages from nationally available service contract providers.

Inflation rate: 3.5%

Ownership Costs

Ownership costs are the costs to purchase and operate a vehicle. Understanding these costs can save you money.

Regardless of the "value" claims that you may read in car reviews or hear in ads, a vehicle's economic value is based on how much it will cost to own and operate compared to its purchase price. In a sense, ownership costs are "what you pay" and the purchase price is "what you get." The less you pay for what you get the better.

Ownership costs can differ greatly. As the chart on the right illustrates, the cost to own and operate two different vehicles with equal 14,500 purchase prices can differ by over $4,000!
