In 1946 Honda began in Japan as the Honda Technical research institute, building engines and tools. In 1948 the name changed to Honda Motor Company. American Honda Motor Company was established in 1959, selling motorcycles in Los Angeles. Ten years later the first Honda automobile was sold in the U.S. In 1982 Honda became the first Japanese automobile company to manufacture cars on U.S. soil. By 1988 Honda had begun exporting American-made models and in 1994 over 100,000 Honda automobiles were exported to 36 countries, including Japan. Honda's ten-millionth American-made car rolled off the assembly line in 1995. |
