All engines have at least two valves for each cylinder--one for the intake of a fresh fuel/air mixture and the other for the expulsion of exhaust gases. Some engines have three or four valves for each cylinder. The additional valves allow a more efficient movement of the air/fuel mixture into the combustion chambers and faster, more efficient expulsion of exhaust gases. As a result, engine power increases.
